Chapter 114 Disappointment
"You saw everything, didn't you?" Lewis's face was blank as he stared at Daphne.
"She actually confronted me over some bastard's offhand remark—her brains are turning to mush lately!" he seethed inwardly.
Turns out she was just someone Lewis could use.
Daphne's heart sank. She thought of the lunchbox in the trash can. She and her lunchbox were the same—garbage, easily used by Lewis.
Bitterness washed over her. It turned out she was just someone Lewis could use.
Vernon had already started to smooth things over. The evidence was clear; Lorenzo couldn't stay in the company. But Lewis had prepared for this, so the company's losses would be quickly recovered.
With everything sorted, Vernon left with Lorenzo, muttering curses under his breath.
The other board members looked at Lewis apologetically, showering him with compliments, afraid he might hold a grudge.
Lewis, growing impatient, spoke coolly, "I'll take care of it."
"Yes, of course!"
"We believe you could lead the Anderson Group forward."
Relieved they wouldn't be implicated, the board members left one by one.
Gloria suddenly started clapping, a smug smile on her face.
She looked at Lewis with pride and admiration. "That's my brother. I knew you could handle an illegitimate child. Well done."
Then she noticed Daphne standing pale-faced to the side.
She burst out laughing, walked over to Daphne, and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at her. "Daphne, you're such a monumental fool!"
"Did you really think Lewis's kindness meant he loved you? You're just a tool for him. I've never seen anything so funny in all these years!"
Daphne had heard plenty of harsh words before, but today, every word pierced her heart.
She felt utterly foolish!
Just moments ago, she had been worried about Lewis, afraid he would be in trouble, even thinking she could help him!
Now, Daphne realized she was just a fool!
Lewis was the worst person she could have ever met!
Whenever he beckoned, she would obediently follow. It was pathetic.
"Enough, you should go back." Seeing Daphne's face grow paler, Lewis's expression changed, and he barked out.
Gloria, though reluctant, let go of Daphne and wiped her fingers with a tissue, clearly disgusted.
Daphne's eyes filled with tears, but she stubbornly tilted her head back, refusing to let them fall.
"I'll be waiting at home. Vernon will definitely want to discuss this tonight." Gloria glanced at Lewis, then grabbed her bag and left, humming a tune, mocking Daphne with every step.
Suddenly, the once-crowded conference room was empty, leaving only Lewis and Daphne.
Daphne leaned against the wall to keep herself from collapsing.
She took a deep breath, forcing back her tears, and looked straight at Lewis. "You got what you wanted. Can I resign now?"
Lewis met her gaze, feeling a strange panic.
He stepped forward, frowning at Daphne. "Don't you understand why I did this?"
"I understand. Only I could make it convincing." she sneered, "I'm your assistant. This is my job. But Mr. Anderson, I want to resign."
Daphne didn't want to argue anymore. She just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
Seeing her like this, Lewis grew anxious, his brows furrowing tightly. "Do you really want to leave me that badly?"
"A tool that's been used should be discarded, right? I don't like the trash can. I want to leave on my own terms. It's my last bit of dignity. Mr. Anderson, please let me go." Daphne mustered the courage to say these words and turned to leave.
Lewis grabbed her wrist. "What are you so upset about?"
This was a necessary move. He hadn't really hurt her, just played along!
"If it weren't for your unclear relationship with Lorenzo, I wouldn't have had to do this." Lewis's anger flared, and he started speaking without thinking. "Daphne, you were the one who messed up. I'm cleaning up your mess, and you're throwing a fit? Have I not given you enough respect?"
Daphne couldn't understand how he could be so self-righteous after doing such a thing.
Her brows knitted tightly as she looked at Lewis, filled with disappointment.
She shook her head. "You're right. It's all my fault. I'm not fit to be your assistant. I don't deserve to stay by your side. I'm begging you, let me go!"
"Daphne, have you had enough?" Lewis completely lost his patience.
"What right do I have to throw a fit?" Daphne exploded, shaking off Lewis's hand. "What am I? What right do I have? You got everything you wanted. Why can't you just let me go?"
Daphne's face was full of anger, the anger of being played, the shame of being used by someone she loved!
Lewis found her completely unreasonable.
Lewis found her completely unreasonable. But he still tried to speak calmly. "If you want to resign, I won't stop you."
Of course, he wouldn't stop her.
Daphne laughed coldly, losing all hope in him, this place, this city.
She took a deep breath and walked out.
Watching her leave, Lewis felt utterly baffled.
He angrily kicked the chair in front of him. "Daphne, you better not regret this!"
Leaving the conference room, Daphne rushed to the bathroom, tears streaming down her face.
She turned on the faucet, splashing cold water on her face over and over.
"Daphne. Don't cry, you useless thing. Don't cry!" She looked at her tear-streaked reflection in the mirror, feeling utterly humiliated, warning herself again and again.
