Chapter 108 Remove the Firewood from Under the Pot
His voice was softer than she'd ever heard.
For reasons she couldn't quite grasp, Daphne found herself losing the will to resist. She lay quietly in his arms, letting him hold her.
They held each other tightly through the night. Though they didn't engage in anything intimate, their bond had clearly deepened.
It was then that Daphne realized a man could hold a woman without doing anything, and that doing nothing could be so fulfilling.
If things could always be like this, she would be content.
But Daphne knew this was impossible. Their relationship couldn't stay this way forever.
Soon, she heard Lewis's breathing become steady and even, indicating he had fallen asleep.
Lewis was usually a light sleeper, but tonight he had drifted off quickly. He must have been exhausted from all the recent chaos, and he looked thinner and paler than before.
Even with just a warm yellow lamp on the bedside table, she could see his handsome features. Unfortunately, his brows were furrowed tightly, even in sleep, showing his unrest.
Daphne reached out silently, gently tracing his eyebrows and eyes. In the past, after their passionate moments, he would always leave, and they had never spent a night like this together.
Now, Daphne felt an overwhelming warmth in her heart. Simply watching him quietly was more fulfilling than anything else.
She shifted slightly, slipping out of his embrace, and quietly covered him with a blanket. She continued to watch him in silence.
Only in moments like these could she deceive herself into believing that he belonged to her.
They held each other tightly throughout the night, sleeping until dawn.
Daphne woke up early and busied herself in the kitchen preparing breakfast. She noticed that Lewis had been drinking more than eating lately, which must have made him feel unwell. She just wanted him to be comfortable, especially during this difficult time.
Soon, breakfast was ready. Instead of waking him up immediately, she walked over to him, resting her chin in her hand, and stared at him.
It seemed like fate had favored Lewis, giving him the best of everything—good background, sharp mind, and even perfect looks.
Lying there, with sunlight streaming through the curtains onto his face, he looked like a flawless work of art, impossible to look away from.
"Have you seen enough?" Lewis slowly opened his eyes, looking at her with a teasing smile.
Caught in the act, Daphne felt a wave of panic and embarrassment. She stood up hastily, fumbling with her words. "It's time to get up. I made breakfast for you."
"Okay." Lewis's lips curled into a slight smile as he got up in a good mood.
Seeing the breakfast on the table, Lewis felt a warm sensation in his heart. A woman who wasn't stubborn was indeed the most adorable.
He sat there, staring at Daphne with a clear message: he was feeling weak and needed to be taken care of.
Daphne felt a bit exasperated but still patiently served him a bowl of oatmeal.
""
You're still the CEO of Anderson Group. No matter what people are saying, you need to take care of yourself. You've lost weight." Daphne spoke almost instinctively, but after sitting down, she realized she had no right to say such things given her current position.
She took a deep breath and looked at Lewis apologetically. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."
"I like it when you speak your mind." Lewis took a sip of the oatmeal, closing his eyes in satisfaction. "You should do it more often."
Lately, he hadn't been himself. Ever since she mentioned resigning, he hadn't been able to eat or sleep well, feeling like he didn't recognize himself anymore.
With that sip of oatmeal, he felt like he was coming back to life.
"What's going on at the company?" Daphne couldn't help but worry. "There's a lot of talk, and people are criticizing you. Are you... okay?"
"Are you concerned about me?" Lewis put down his spoon, raising an eyebrow and looking at her with a teasing smile.
Daphne wished she could bite her tongue off!
She scolded herself for being so weak, for asking unnecessary questions.
Seeing her silence, Lewis asked again. "Are you concerned about me?"
"I'm just worried about my job and year-end bonus."
After all, she still worked at Anderson Group, and everyone assumed she was Lewis's person. If Lewis fell, wouldn't she fall with him?
Yes, that explanation made perfect sense.
"I have my own plans for this. Just take care of yourself!" Lewis left those words behind and turned to walk out.
The previously warm atmosphere turned cold and awkward after he left.
Daphne looked at the steaming oatmeal on the table, feeling a mix of emotions. She was definitely worried about him!
But she had no right to express her concern openly.
Her brows furrowed tightly as she picked up the spoon and finished the remaining oatmeal.
She planned to tidy up and head to work, but then she received a text: [I want beef for lunch.]
He was really demanding!
Daphne rolled her eyes and checked the time. There was still some time before work. She hesitated but eventually softened and went to the kitchen to prepare beef.
She packed the food in a thermal container, hoping it would still be warm by lunchtime.
At Anderson Group, everyone in the company was aware of the online rumors, and their attitudes towards Lewis had subtly changed.
The employees at Anderson Group were sharp and knew how to position themselves strategically. After all, sometimes where you stand can determine your perspective.
"These people are really impatient!" Nolan placed two documents on the table, scoffing. "Ronnie just joined our company, and already some people are getting restless. They're trying to pull the rug out from under us!"
Lewis picked up the documents, glanced at them, and spoke calmly. "Everything else is secondary. But I need Ronnie."
