Chapter 41 The Separation
Chapter 41 The Separation
Isabella's POV
Damián finds her in the library the next morning.
He's dressed in an expensive suit. His dark hair is perfectly styled. He looks like a businessman instead of a criminal. But his eyes carry the coldness of someone who's made a decision.
"We need to talk," he says. His voice is formal. Professional. The voice of someone who's already decided what comes next.
Isabella stands. She can feel what's coming. Can feel the moment approaching where she can't exist in both worlds anymore.
"I'm giving you a choice," Damián says. "A real choice. Not a threat. Not a manipulation. Just a simple decision between two options."
He sits across from her, and the distance between them suddenly feels enormous.
"You can stay," Damián says. "You can accept my world completely. You can stop being DEA. You can stop having divided loyalties. You can choose me."
He pauses.
"Or you can leave," Damián continues. "You can go back to your federal life. You can report everything you know about my organization. You can use the evidence you've gathered to build a case against me. You can choose your career and your oath."
Isabella's chest tightens.
"But you can't have both," Damián says. His voice is ice. "I can't have you investigating me while also claiming to love me. I can't have you gathering evidence while sleeping in my bed. I can't trust someone who's divided between two worlds."
He leans forward.
"So choose," Damián commands. "Not right now. Not this moment. But soon. Within the week. Choose whether you're mine completely or whether you're federal completely."
"I need time," Isabella says. The words come out before she can stop them.
Damián's expression hardens into something cruel.
"Then the answer is no," he says flatly. "You can't have both, Isabella. You can't be loyal to me while also maintaining your connection to the DEA. You can't love me while also building a case against me. That's not a choice. That's just you trying to avoid choosing."
He stands and walks away from her.
Isabella realizes he's right. She's been trying to have it both ways. Trying to stay with Damián while also keeping her options open with the federal government. Trying to love him while also protecting herself.
But that's not fair to either world.
She's still DEA. She still took an oath. She still has a duty to uphold the law and prosecute criminals. Damián is a criminal. She has evidence against him. She has everything she needs to build a case.
But she also loves him. Really loves him. Not the fantasy version. The actual man. The man who tortures without hesitation. The man who's willing to destroy anyone who threatens what's his.
Sofia faced the same choice. Sofia chose love. Sofia chose Damián despite knowing what he was capable of. And Sofia died for that choice.
Over the next few days, Isabella can feel the shift. Damián stops holding her the way he used to. Stops looking at her like she's precious. Starts treating her like a guest in his home instead of a woman he loves.
He's pulling away. Preparing himself for her departure.
Isabella watches him do it and realizes what she's about to lose. Not just Damián. But the entire life she was building. The person she was becoming. The love that made her feel alive for the first time since Sofia died.
On the fourth day, Damián calls her into his office.
He hands her a phone. A new phone. Brand new.
"Call your DEA handler," he says. His voice is completely neutral. "Call Lu. Call whoever you need to call to arrange your extraction."
Isabella's hands shake as she takes the phone.
"Or don't," Damián continues. "You can stay. You can burn your bridges. You can choose me completely. But you need to make that decision now. Not next week. Not tomorrow. Today."
He sits behind his desk like she's a business associate instead of someone he loves.
"If you stay," Damián says, "you stay forever. There's no going back. There's no changing your mind later. There's no walking away when the reality of my world becomes too much. You accept all of me. The love and the violence. The tenderness and the cruelty."
Isabella looks at the phone in her hands.
"And if you leave?" she asks.
"Then I let you go," Damián says. "I give you money. I give you resources. I give you a new identity. And I remove you from the cartel's radar. You become someone I used to know. Someone who belonged to a different part of my life."
He leans back in his chair.
"But you can never come back," Damián continues. "You can never contact me. You can never ask for help or forgiveness or a second chance. You make this choice, and it's final."
Isabella's throat is dry.
"Call them," Damián says. "Or destroy the phone and choose me. But make a decision. Right now. I'm done waiting."
Isabella looks at the phone. At this object that represents her entire previous life. Her career. Her oath. Her duty to justice and law and order.
She thinks about Sofia. About the choice her sister made. About the fact that Sofia chose love despite knowing it was dangerous.
But Sofia is dead. Sofia paid the ultimate price for that choice.
Can Isabella do the same? Can she really walk away from everything she's built? Can she really commit to a man who tortures without hesitation? Can she really become someone who's complicit in his crimes?
She raises the phone.
Damián's expression goes completely blank. He's already accepted that she's leaving. Already prepared himself for her departure.
Isabella's finger hovers over the phone's power button.
She thinks about the first time she saw Damián in the café. About the small moments on the estate. About the night he held her and whispered that he loved her. About the man who chose her despite knowing she came here to destroy him.
She thinks about the torture. About the violence. About the man he becomes when someone threatens what's his.
And she makes her choice.
She destroys the phone.
She throws it against the wall hard enough that it shatters into pieces. The screen cracks. The circuits break. It becomes nothing but garbage.
Damián's expression shifts. Surprise flickers across his face for just a moment before his control returns.
"I'm staying," Isabella says. Her voice is steady even though her hands are shaking. "I'm choosing you. I'm choosing this world. I'm choosing to stop being DEA and start being completely yours."
She walks toward his desk.
"But I need you to understand something," Isabella continues. "I'm not doing this because I'm broken or because I can't think for myself. I'm doing this because I love you. Because Sofia loved you and died for that love. And I'm choosing to live for it instead."
Damián stands and pulls her close. He doesn't speak. Just holds her against his chest while the weight of her choice settles between them.
"You understand what this means?" he asks finally.
"Yes," Isabella says. "It means I can never go back. It means I'm complicit in everything you do. It means I'm choosing you over justice and law and my entire career."
"And you accept that?" Damián asks.
"Yes," Isabella whispers.
Damián kisses her then. It's not gentle. It's claiming. It's ownership. It's the kiss of a man who's just won something he thought he was losing.
When they break apart, Isabella realizes there's no going back now. She's burned every bridge. She's made her choice.
She's chosen love over duty.
And she has no idea if that choice will destroy her.
