Chapter 40 The Impossible Position
Chapter 40 The Impossible Position
Isabella's POV
Isabella stands outside the containment room and watches through the small window.
Ghost is chained to a chair in the center of the concrete floor. His knees are destroyed. Blood has dried on his pants. His face is pale from pain and blood loss. And Damián is circling him like a predator that's already won the fight.
"Tell me about the first time you considered betraying me," Damián says. His voice is almost conversational. Like they're just having a normal discussion instead of a torture session.
Ghost doesn't answer immediately. His jaw is clenched against the agony. His entire body is rigid with suffering.
Damián picks up a knife from a nearby table. He doesn't use it immediately. He just holds it and lets Ghost see it. Let Ghost's mind imagine what's about to happen.
"The knife or you can talk," Damián says. "Your choice."
Ghost starts talking. He describes the moment Victoria Lucci first approached him. The moment he decided that power was more valuable than loyalty. The moment he stopped seeing himself as Damián's second-in-command and started seeing himself as a future leader.
As Ghost talks, Damián makes small cuts. Not deep enough to cause serious injury. Just deep enough to cause pain. Just enough to remind Ghost that his suffering can continue indefinitely.
Isabella watches and feels something inside her die.
This isn't justice. This isn't even revenge in the traditional sense. This is torture for the sake of torture. This is a man who's been trained his entire life to see suffering as a tool of control. This is Damián stripped of all pretense. Damián as he truly is.
She came here for justice for Sofia. She found the killer. But now she's watching something darker. Something that looks more like vengeance than justice. Something that looks more like cruelty than punishment.
Damián makes another cut, and Ghost screams.
Isabella turns away from the window. She can't watch anymore. Can't witness what her love has enabled. Can't stand to see the man she fell for doing this to another human being.
She walks down the hallway with her heart pounding and her mind spiraling.
Later, Damián finds her in the bedroom. He's cleaned up. Changed clothes. Shows no sign that he just spent the last three hours torturing someone.
"You watched," he says. It's not a question.
"Yes," Isabella admits.
"And it bothered you," Damián continues. He sits on the edge of the bed beside her.
Isabella doesn't deny it.
"I'm going to be honest with you," Damián says. "I'm going to tell you something that Sofia never wanted to hear. Something that I've kept hidden because I knew it would change how you see me."
He pauses.
"I enjoy causing pain," Damián says. His voice is completely calm. "Not in a sadistic way. But in a strategic way. I enjoy the power of it. I enjoy watching someone understand that their suffering is completely in my control. I enjoy the fear it creates in other people."
Isabella feels cold.
"My father taught me that mercy is weakness," Damián continues. "He taught me that the only way to command respect is through fear. The only way to maintain power is through the threat of violence. And I've spent my entire life believing that."
He looks directly at Isabella.
"So when Ghost betrayed me, when he killed Sofia, when he decided that his ambition was more important than his loyalty, I didn't just want to punish him. I wanted to make him suffer. I wanted him to understand that betraying me costs more than death. It costs your peace. It costs your dignity. It costs everything."
Isabella's chest is tight.
"That's who I am," Damián says. "Not the man who teaches you piano. Not the man who brings you flowers. Not the man who holds you gently in the darkness. That's part of me, yes. But it's only part."
He stands and walks to the window.
"This bothers you," he observes. His voice is flat. Like he's already accepted her answer before she gives it.
"Yes," Isabella says.
Damián is quiet for a long moment.
"Then maybe you don't love me," he says. His voice is still calm, but underneath it she can hear something breaking. "Maybe you love the idea of me. The man I could be if I was different. The version of me that you decided existed beneath the criminal. But not the man I actually am."
Isabella wants to argue. Wants to tell him that's not true. But the words stick in her throat because some part of her knows he's right.
She did fall in love with an idealized version of Damián. She fell in love with the man who loved Sofia so deeply that he searched for her like she was the only thing that mattered. She fell in love with the man who plays piano and brings flowers and holds her gently.
But she fell in love with a fantasy. A version of Damián that exists only in her imagination. The real Damián is capable of torturing someone without hesitation. The real Damián is capable of taking pleasure in causing pain. The real Damián is the man his father raised him to be.
"I love you," Isabella says finally. "But I don't know if I can accept what you do. I don't know if I can be part of a world where torture is justice."
"Then you have a choice to make," Damián says. He turns to face her. "You can stay and accept all of me. The good and the bad. The tender and the brutal. Or you can leave and pretend this never happened."
He walks toward the door.
"I'm not going to force you to stay," Damián says. "I'm not going to threaten you or punish you for leaving. Because if you stay, I need it to be a choice. I need it to be real."
"And if I leave?" Isabella asks.
"Then I'll let you go," Damián says. "I'll give you money. I'll give you resources. I'll make sure you can disappear completely. And I'll never look for you."
He opens the door.
"But you need to decide soon," Damián continues. "Because Ghost is going to die in a few days. And when he does, there's no taking it back. There's no pretending you didn't watch it happen. There's no returning to the woman you were before you saw what I'm truly capable of."
He leaves, and Isabella is alone in the bedroom with the weight of impossible choices crushing down on her.
She thinks about Sofia. About her sister who loved Damián despite knowing what he was. Despite knowing that his world was dangerous and violent and brutal.
Sofia chose him. Sofia accepted the violence because she loved him more than she feared the consequences.
Can Isabella do the same?
She walks to the window and looks out at San Isidro. At the city that Damián controls. At the empire he's built on blood and loyalty and fear.
And she realizes that she's standing at a crossroads. She can walk away. Can go back to her DEA career. Can pretend that none of this happened.
Or she can accept Damián completely. Can accept the violence and the brutality and the torture. Can become someone who's complicit in his crimes because she loves him too much to leave.
There's no middle ground. There's no compromise.
It's all or nothing.
Her phone buzzes. It's a text from Lu: "We know you're alive. We're ready to extract you anytime. Just say the word."
Isabella stares at the message. At the lifeline being offered. At the escape route that's still available.
She deletes the message without responding.
