Chapter 32 Racing the Void
Chapter 32 Racing the Void
POV: Aria
Kael screams.
It's not a sound. It's a scream that travels through the bond. Through our connection. Through the very essence of what we are to each other.
His form flickers violently. One moment he's solid beside me. The next he's translucent and fading. The void is pulling at him with everything it has.
"It's starting," he gasps. His voice doesn't sound human anymore. It sounds like wind through a cemetery. "I can feel the pull. It's calling everyone. He's taking others."
I understand immediately. Matthias isn't just completing the ritual with Lyanna. He's harvesting. Every awakened wolf in the lower levels of the Citadel is being drained. Every ounce of power is flowing toward him through the Blood Moon magic.
And Kael can feel it all happening.
"How long?" I ask. Not how long until it's complete. How long until it's too late.
"Hours," he whispers. "Maybe less."
I look at him. Really look at him. My ancient Alpha King who's been fading since the moment he woke. Who's been burning through himself to stay with me. Who loves me enough to try to protect me even from the void itself.
And I make the only decision that matters.
"We anchor you," I say. "Completely. Right now."
Kael's eyes go wide. "No. Aria, no. That will accelerate the merging. Your body won't be able to sustain both consciousnesses. You'll die sooner. You'll—"
"I'm already dying," I cut him off. My voice is steady even though my hands are shaking. "The bond was always going to kill me or kill you. So we stop choosing between two deaths. We choose one. Together. And at least this way we go down fighting instead of fading in the dark."
He reaches for me but hesitates. Like he's trying to find the strength to argue. Like he's trying to find a reason to say no.
He can't.
I move to the command tent entrance. The resistance fighters are gathered there. Two hundred souls who've given up everything to believe in something better.
"It's time," I tell them. "Matthias is beginning the ritual now. We don't have weeks. We don't have days. We have hours. We assault the Citadel now. Full force. Everything we have."
The tent erupts. Warriors grab weapons. Scouts prepare routes. Fenris starts organizing the assault. This is what we've been training for. This is the moment.
But I'm not with them. I'm still in the back chamber with Kael.
He's pulled himself together. Found some last reserve of strength. He manifests fully and completely. More solid than he's been in weeks. Maybe more solid than he's been since I first woke him from that tomb.
His hand pulls me close. Not gentle. Desperate.
"I love you," he says. His voice is clear and certain. Like he needs me to hear this without any distance between us. "I love you completely. I love you beyond magic and duty and everything else. I love you."
I touch his face. His skin is warm. Real. For this moment, he's completely here.
"And I love you," I tell him. "Let's end this."
We kiss.
It's not tender. It's not gentle. It's two people pouring everything into one moment because we know what comes next. I feel him through the kiss. Feel his fear and his love and his desperate need to stay with me.
And I pull him deeper.
Not into my body. Into my consciousness. Into the very core of who I am.
I feel him resist for a moment. Trying to protect me even now. Then he surrenders.
His consciousness flows into mine like water finding its level. Not violent. Not consuming. But complete. Absolute. He's no longer outside me looking in. He's inside. Woven into every thought. Every heartbeat. Every breath.
When we pull apart, he's barely visible. His form is almost translucent. A ghost of what he was.
But inside me, his presence is blazing. Stronger than ever. More real than ever.
Two consciousnesses sharing one body.
Two souls choosing to exist as one.
"Ready?" I ask him. Or maybe I ask myself. It's hard to tell where I end and he begins now.
His presence responds with absolute certainty. Yes.
I walk out of the chamber. The resistance soldiers see me and they see what I've become. Not just a girl with power anymore. I'm a conduit. An anchor. A True Keeper who's merged with an ancient Alpha King.
Blue and gold light crackles around me.
Kael's presence rises up beside my own. Not separate but integrated. We are two beings now functioning as one.
"Let's go," I say aloud. They hear both my voice and something else underneath it. His voice. Our voice.
The resistance moves as one. Two hundred warriors. The defected Council guards. The refugees who've lost everything. All of us moving toward the Citadel where Matthias waits.
Where the final battle will decide everything.
We run toward the gates. Toward destiny. Toward the moment where everything changes.
And inside me, Kael holds tight.
Not afraid anymore.
Not fading anymore.
Just ready.
