Chapter 128 The Mark

Chapter 128 The Mark
Lira pov

"Then trust me," I grabbed his hands. "Trust that I know how to survive. Trust that I can handle threats, trust that hiding isn't the answer."

"I want to," he pulled me close. "But every instinct is screaming to lock you away, to guard you with my life, to eliminate any possible threat before it reaches you."

"I know." I rested my head against his chest. "But you can't protect me from everything. And trying will just drive us apart."

We stood there, holding each other—two people who loved desperately but disagreed fundamentally.

"Compromise," he finally said. "You talk to Aria, but with armed guards present. You stay in secured areas until we understand the threat. You let me assign a personal protection detail."

"And you stop trying to make decisions for me," I countered. "Stop giving commands that override my agency. Stop treating this like your problem to solve alone."

"Deal." He kissed the top of my head. "I'll try. Can't promise I won't slip because every protective instinct I have is on overdrive."

"I know," I pulled back slightly. "And I appreciate it. Just remember I'm not helpless. I'm the Luna who broke a curse and converted assassins, i can handle threats."

"You're also few weeks pregnant and exhausted from overusing your power," he reminded me. "Sometimes accepting help isn't weakness. It's wisdom."

"Fine," I conceded. "Bring Aria here with guards. Let's figure out how to remove these marks before they activate."

Thomas left to arrange it as Kael immediately started positioning furniture to create defensive positions.

"Really?" I watched him move chairs. "You're fortifying our bedroom?"

"Humor me." He didn't look up. "Let me do something useful instead of just worrying."

I almost smiled. "You're ridiculous."

"I'm thorough." He positioned himself between me and the door. "There's a difference."

Aria arrived ten minutes later, flanked by four warriors. Her expression showed confusion and fear. "Lira?" She looked between us. "Thomas said I have a mark? That I'm compromised?"

"Show me your left shoulder," I said gently.

She pulled down her collar. There, hidden beneath her healer's robes, was the assassin's sigil—black, twisted, glowing with dark energy.

"I didn't know." Her voice shook. "I swear I didn't know it was there."

"We believe you." I moved closer despite Kael's warning growl. "Can you remove it? Some healing technique or counter-magic?"

"Maybe." She examined the mark in a mirror. "It's attached to my life force. Removing it wrong could kill me or activate it immediately."

"Then we do it carefully." I touched her shoulder. "Let me help, my power might purify it."

"Lira, no." Kael grabbed my arm. "You're not risking yourself for this."

"She's my friend," I pulled free. "And if I don't help, the mark activates and she tries to kill me anyway. At least this way we have control."

"This is exactly what I meant about reckless!" He blocked my path. "You're jumping into danger without thinking!"

"I'm thinking clearly," I met his eyes. "I'm thinking this is the right choice, the brave choice, the choice a Luna makes."

"It's the choice that gets you killed!" His desperation was palpable. "Please, please just let someone else handle this."

"There is no one else," I said softly. "Only I can purify the mark safely. You know it, I know it. Stop trying to protect me from my own purpose."

He stared at me for a long moment, then stepped aside. "Fine." His voice was tight. "But if anything goes wrong, I'm stopping it immediately."

"Fair." I turned to Aria. "Ready?"

"Terrified," she admitted. "But ready."

I placed my hand on the mark, felt dark magic pulse under my palm—hungry, waiting to activate. "It's designed to trigger at moonrise tonight," I said. "That's when you'd attack me. Unconscious, controlled, weaponized."

"Can you stop it?" she asked.

"I can try." I channeled my power carefully, flames spreading across the mark.

It fought back—dark magic writhing, trying to corrupt my power, trying to infect me. "It's resisting," I gritted my teeth. "Trying to spread to me, to mark me too."

"Stop!" Kael moved forward. "Stop before it infects you!"

"Almost there." I pushed harder, felt the mark starting to break apart. "Just need"

The mark exploded, dark magic erupting outward. Kael threw himself in front of me as the corruption hit him instead, spreading across his chest like black veins.

"No!" I grabbed him as he collapsed. "Kael! Kael, stay with me!"

His eyes glazed, the mark transferring from Aria to him, settling into his skin. "The alpha," Aria breathed in horror. "It marked the alpha instead."

I felt through our bond, felt the corruption spreading, felt it trying to take control of him. "Fight it!" I poured my powers into him. "Kael, fight it! Don't let it control you!"

His eyes focused on me. "Get away. Now. Before it makes me hurt you."

"I'm not leaving you!" I channeled more power. "I can purify this! Just hold on!"

"Lira," his voice strained. "The mark is designed for you. It's confused, trying to adapt. When it figures out I'm not the target..."

"What?" I demanded. "What happens?"

"It'll use me to get to you," he grabbed my wrist with painful intensity. "Will make me lead assassins straight to you, will turn me into the weapon they use to kill you."

The room went silent. "Then we remove it," I said firmly. "Before that happens."

"Can't." Aria shook her head. "It's fully integrated now. Removing it will kill him, the only way to stop it is..."

"Is what?" I demanded.

She met my eyes. "Is to kill the one who cast it, sever the connection at its source only then will the mark release him."

"So we find the caster," I decided. "Hunt them down, force them to release Kael."

"The caster is council elite," Thomas had been silent until now. "Protected in council chambers and I am sure unreachable."

"Then I reach them." I stood. "I go to council chambers, I make them release Kael. Whatever it takes."

"That's suicide," Kael forced himself up. "That's exactly what they want—you walking into their trap."

"Then I spring the trap," I pulled him close. "And I survive it because that's what I do."

"Lira," his hands shook against my face. "Please, don't do this. Don't throw your life away for me."

"I'm not throwing it away," I kissed him softly. "I'm fighting for it. For you, for our child, for our future."

"There has to be another way," he pleaded. "Some other option."

"There isn't," I pulled back. "And you know it, the mark activates at moonrise. That gives us twelve hours to find the caster and force them to release you."

"Or twelve hours until I become the weapon that kills you," he said bitterly. "Perfect plan."

"Then we don't waste time arguing." I turned to Thomas. "Gather the warriors, anyone willing to march on council chambers. We leave within the hour."

"Lira, wait" Kael started.

"No more waiting," I faced him. "No more hiding, no more letting fear make our choices. We end this today.."

He searched my eyes, then nodded slowly."Together," he agreed. "But if the mark activates before we reach the caster, you promise me something."

"What?" I asked carefully.

"You run," his voice was cold. "You let the warriors stop me, and you survive. Promise me."

"I promise," I lied.
