Chapter 127 The Assassin's Mark

Chapter 127 The Assassin's Mark
Lira pov

I woke to Kael pacing the chambers like a caged wolf. Dawn light filtered through the windows. I slept through the entire night for the first time in weeks. "What's wrong?" I pushed myself upright, hand instinctively moving to my stomach.

He spun to face me. "Thomas intercepted a messenger. The council issued a death warrant—sanctioned assassination."

My blood ran cold. "For me?"

"For you specifically." He crossed to the bed, holding out a sealed document. "They're calling you a rogue Luna, a threat to regional stability. Any wolf who eliminates you receives council protection and rewards."

I took the document with shaking hands and read the official language that essentially put a price on my head. "They're desperate." I set it aside. "We converted their assassins and won against impossible odds. Now they're scrambling."

"They're dangerous," he corrected. "Desperate enemies make stupid and violent choices. They'll send everyone they have."

"Then we prepare." I stood despite his protest.

"No." His command rolled through the room. "You hide deep in pack territory where no assassin can reach. You need to be protected day and night."

"Absolutely not." I faced him directly. "I'm not hiding while others fight my battles."

"You're pregnant!" His voice cracked. "Carrying our child! You can't just ignore that!"

"I'm not ignoring it." I touched my stomach. "I'm protecting it. The best protection is eliminating the threat, not cowering from it."

He grabbed my shoulders. "They will kill you. They will never stop coming until you're dead or they are."

"Then I make sure they die first." I pulled away gently. "I've survived years of abuse, broken an ancient curse, and converted assassins. Do you think I'm going to hide now?"

"I think you're being reckless!" he shouted. "Suicidal! You're not just risking yourself anymore!"

"And you're being overprotective!" I shot back. "Treating me like fragile glass that might shatter!"

"Because you might!" His hands shook. "One blade, one mistake, one moment of vulnerability, and I lose everything. You, our child, our future."

The raw fear in his voice made me pause. "Kael." I moved closer, touching his face. "I understand you're scared. I am scared too. But hiding won't keep us safe. It'll just make us easier targets."

"Fortified protection isn't hiding," he caught my wrist. "It's strategy and being smart. It's keeping you alive long enough to have this baby."

"It's prison." I moved closer, my fingers trailing up his chest. "And I've had enough of those to last a lifetime."

I pressed my body against his, tilting my head to press soft kisses along his jaw. His breath hitched, but his grip on my wrist tightened.

"Lira"

"I won't be caged again," I whispered against his neck, my lips grazing his pulse point. I shifted, straddling his lap as he sat on the edge of the bed. "Not even by you."

His free hand gripped my hip, but his voice remained firm. "This seduction isn't working."

I pulled back slightly, meeting his storm-gray eyes. My hands framed his face as I held his gaze. "It's been a while since you fucked me, Kael."

His pupils dilated, jaw clenching. "You're in a fragile state right now"

"Please," I interrupted, "can we stop changing the topic?"

The tension between us crackled. His hands trembled where they held me, torn between desire and fear, between protection and control.

A knock interrupted the moment. Thomas entered without waiting for permission.

"It's high time you learn to get permission before entering," Kael snapped, his voice sharp with frustration and barely contained aggression. "Wait until we say 'enter' before you barge in. Lira might be naked, or we might be having sex."

Thomas froze mid-step, his expression shifting from urgency to embarrassment. "I—apologize but we found something."

His expression was grim as he continued. "A mark. On three pack members, but they don't remember receiving it."

I slid off Kael's lap, smoothing my clothing. "What kind of mark?"

"Assassin's sigil." He showed us a sketch. "It's a tracking mark. Whoever has it can be used to locate you, to get close without suspicion."

Kael's face went pale. "They're inside our defenses already. Sleeper agents waiting to strike."

"Who has the marks?" I demanded.

Thomas hesitated. "Jasper, Elder Ruth, and... Aria."

The room went silent. "Aria?" I breathed. "But she's been my friend, my healer. She wouldn't"

"She probably doesn't know," Thomas said quickly. "The marks operate unconsciously, the host doesn't realize they're compromised until activated."

"When will they activate?" Kael asked.

"Unknown," Thomas admitted. "Could be hours, could be days. But once activated, the host becomes a puppet, does whatever the mark commands."

"Including killing me." I finished. "They've turned my friends into weapons against me."

Kael's expression hardened. "Lock them up. All three. Separate cells, armed guards, no contact with Lira."

"No," I said firmly. "They're victims, we don't punish them for being used."

"We protect you!" He rounded on me. "Even if it means temporary imprisonment for compromised pack members!"

"We find another way," I insisted. "Aria might know how to remove the marks, let me talk to her."

"Absolutely not." His command was absolute. "You're not going anywhere near anyone with an assassin's mark."

"Then bring her here," I challenged. "Under guard. Let me try to help her."

"No." He moved between me and the door. "The answer is no. You're staying in these chambers until we've secured the situation."

"You're ordering me?" My voice dropped dangerously. "Your Luna? Your mate? Your equal partner?"

"I'm protecting my pregnant mate from assassination!" he shouted. "If that makes me controlling, I'll live with it!"

"And I'll what?" I demanded. "Just accept being locked up again? Accept you making decisions for me? Accept going back to being the prisoner in the cellar?"

"That's not fair," he said quietly. "I'm not them. I'm not your captors. I'm trying to keep you alive."

"By taking away my choices," I said. "By deciding what's best for me without asking. By treating me like something to protect rather than someone to respect."

"I respect you." His voice broke. "I respect you so much it terrifies me. Because if I lose you, I lose everything that matters."
