Chapter 243 The War Brewing
EPILOGUE
ASTERIA
I stood at the window of Austin's war room, watching as scouts arrived one after another.
Each brought news that made my heart beat faster with vindication.
The latest scout—a young warrior named Kane—knelt before Austin, his voice breathless with excitement.
"Alpha, we have confirmation. The MoonWolf and Darius Pike have been banished by the Supernatural Council."
Austin leaned forward in his chair, his eyes gleaming. "Where are they now?"
"In the wild lands," Kane reported. "Somewhere in rogue territory between Mooncrest and Silvercreek. They're completely vulnerable. No pack backing and resources."
Austin's smile was predatory, satisfied. "Perfect. Absolutely perfect."
He dismissed the scout with a wave of his hand and turned to me.
"Everything is proceeding exactly as we planned," he said, his voice filled with dark pleasure. "Mooncrest is isolated. Their economy has been destroyed by the fires and financial attacks. Their heir is gone—banished alongside the very thing that made him weak."
He stood and moved to the large strategic map covering one wall of the room.
"The Council has turned against them," Austin continued, gesturing to markers on the map. "Public opinion condemns them. Their allies have distanced themselves. They're completely alone."
He placed a marker on a section of the map representing Mooncrest territory.
"Now we strike."
Within the hour, Austin had gathered the full war council.
The room filled with Alphas from allied packs, each one powerful, each one hungry for what Austin was offering.
Alpha Kellen of Eastfang arrived first, his scarred face twisted into something like a smile.
Alpha Mara of Lightclaw came next, her cold eyes calculating as always.
Alpha Garrick of Ironpaw entered last, his massive frame barely fitting through the doorway.
They crowded around the strategic map, their attention focused entirely on Austin.
I stood slightly behind Austin, playing my role as dutiful mate and Luna.
Silent. Supportive. Exactly what they expected.
Austin began without preamble. "Gentlemen. Lady Mara. The moment we've been preparing for has arrived."
He pointed to markers on the map. "Phase one: we capture Ravenna Daniel and Darius Pike."
Kellen frowned. "They're in rogue territory. That's dangerous ground even for trained warriors."
"But they're unprotected," Austin countered. "Two exiles with no pack, no resources, no backup. They're easy targets now. We send our best trackers, our most skilled warriors. We bring them back alive."
"Why alive?" Garrick asked, his voice rumbling. "Why not just kill them and be done with it?"
Austin's smile widened. "Because the MoonWolf is worth far more to us alive. Her power, properly controlled, will be the key to everything."
He moved his hand across the map. "Phase two: full military assault on Mooncrest. They've been weakened—financially ruined, their heir gone, their reputation destroyed. They can't defend against attacks on multiple fronts."
Mara leaned forward, studying the map. "How many fronts are we talking about?"
"Four," Austin replied. "Eastfang attacks from the north. Lightclaw from the east. Ironpaw from the south. Redfire from the west. Simultaneous, coordinated strikes that will overwhelm their defences completely."
The Alphas exchanged glances, their expressions hungry.
"And phase three?" Kellen asked.
Austin's eyes gleamed with ambition. "Phase three: we use the MoonWolf's power to compel loyalty from neutral packs. We manipulate the Council. We reshape the entire supernatural world order."
He paused for effect. "No more hiding in the shadows. No more bowing to outdated laws and weak leaders. We take control. Complete control."
The room fell silent as the enormity of what Austin was proposing sank in.
Then Kellen laughed, a harsh, excited sound. "You're talking about total domination."
"I'm talking about taking what should have been ours generations ago," Austin corrected. "The strong ruling over the weak. The natural order would be restored."
Garrick slammed his fist on the table, making the markers jump. "I'm in. Ironpaw commits fully."
Mara nodded slowly. "Lightclaw as well. This is the opportunity we've been waiting for."
Kellen's scarred face split into a vicious grin. "Eastfang has waited two centuries for revenge against Mooncrest. You have our full support."
Austin looked around the room, satisfaction evident in every line of his body. "Then we agreed. All allied packs move as one."
He placed both hands on the map, his voice dropping to something dark and final. "In one month, Mooncrest will be ashes and we will control the supernatural world."
The Alphas cheered, their voices filling the room with bloodlust and ambition.
Everything they'd dreamed of for generations was finally within reach.
I stood beside Austin as the meeting continued, discussing logistics and troop movements and supply lines.
My face remained carefully neutral, my posture that of a supportive mate.
But inside, something twisted uncomfortably.
I looked at the map, at the small marker showing where scouts had last spotted Ravenna and Darius.
Somewhere in the wild lands alone and vulnerable.
Exactly where I'd wanted them.
For just a moment, something flickered through me.
Regret? Doubt? Grief for what might have been if things had gone differently?
An image flashed through my mind, Ravenna as a teenager, braiding my hair and telling me everything would be alright.
Ravenna protecting me from our father's rages.
Ravenna sharing the little food we had, always making sure I ate first.
My sister.
But I buried the feeling immediately, pushing it down beneath layers of hatred and ambition.
This was what I wanted.
Ravenna suffering the way I'd suffered.
Darius destroyed because he'd chosen her over me.
Mooncrest burning for rejecting me.
I knew Ravenna's bloodline was special: ancient, powerful, not something to be toyed with lightly.
The books I'd read, the whispers I'd heard, all warned that MoonWolf carriers were dangerous when cornered.
But I didn't care about the warnings.
If I couldn't have Darius, if I couldn't have the life I'd dreamed of, then I'd destroy him.
I'd take Ravenna and use her power for myself.
I'd watch everything Darius loved burn to ash.
And maybe then, finally, the pain would stop.
Austin dismissed the other Alphas as evening fell.
They left with promises to mobilize their warriors, to prepare for the coming assault.
When we were alone, Austin turned to me, his expression pleased.
"You've been quiet," he observed.
"I was listening," I replied. "Learning."
Austin studied my face for a moment, then nodded. "You've done well, Asteria. This war—this victory—it's as much yours as mine."
"Because I brought you the information about Ravenna," I said.
"Because you had the vision to see opportunity where others saw only threat," Austin corrected.
He moved to the window, looking out over Redfire territory. "The MoonWolf could have been our enemy. Instead, she'll be our greatest weapon."
"When do we send the trackers?" I asked.
"Tomorrow," Austin replied. "I want Ravenna and Darius captured within the week."
He turned back to me, his smile cold. "And then the real fun begins."
That night, I stood alone in our chambers, staring at my reflection in the mirror.
The woman looking back at me was a stranger.
Luna of Redfire Pack. Mate to Alpha Austin. Architect of a war that would reshape the supernatural world.
When did I become this person?
When had hatred consumed everything good that used to be inside me?
I thought of Ravenna out there in the wilderness, probably cold and scared and grieving everything she'd lost.
I thought of Darius, who'd given up everything for her.
And I felt... nothing.
No satisfaction. No joy. Not even the vindication I'd expected.
Just emptiness.
But it was too late to stop now.
Too late to go back.
I'd set this in motion, and it would play out to its bloody conclusion.
The following morning, Austin gathered his generals in the war room.
I stood beside him as he gave his final orders.
"Send word to all allied packs," Austin commanded, his voice ringing with authority. "Mobilize your warriors, prepare your weapons and gather your supplies."
He paused, his eyes sweeping across the assembled generals.
"The war begins at dawn."
