Chapter 242 The Choice

Chapter 242 The Choice
Chapter 242

DARIUS

I walked through the stunned crowd, my decision already made.

It had been made the moment the Council pronounced their verdict.

The moment they condemned Ravenna to exile, they condemned me too.

Because I couldn't live without her.

My mother appeared in front of me, her face desperate, tears streaming down her cheeks.

She grabbed my arm with both hands, her grip tight. "Darius, no! Please don't do this!"

I stopped, looking down at her.

My heart broke at the pain in her eyes, but my resolve didn't waver.

I gently removed her hands from my arm and kissed her forehead. "I love you, Mum. Always. Please forgive me."

"Don't," she sobbed. "Don't leave me. Don't do this."

"I have to," I said softly.

Then my father stepped in front of me, blocking my path.

His face was a mixture of fury and devastation.

"You cross that border, you can never come back," he said, his voice shaking. "You'll be packless. Exiled. You'll lose everything—your name, your position, your future as Alpha."

He paused, his voice growing desperate. "Everything three generations of our family built. Everything I worked for. Everything your grandfather died protecting. You'll throw it all away."

I met his eyes steadily, my voice calm. "I know."

My father's composure cracked. "I'm ordering you as your Alpha to stand down."

"You're not my Alpha anymore," I replied quietly. "I renounced that when I stepped down as heir."

His face crumpled, and for the first time in my life, I saw my father on the verge of breaking completely.

Marcus suddenly grabbed my shoulder, spinning me around to face him.

"Darius, please," he said desperately. "Think about this. There has to be another way. We can fight the Council's decision. We can appeal—"

I shook my head, cutting him off. "There isn't another way, Marcus. And you know it."

I gripped his shoulder, my voice thick with emotion. "I'm grateful for everything you've done. All the memories we share, all the times you had my back, all the years of friendship. Thank you for being my brother in everything but blood."

Marcus's eyes filled with tears. "Don't do this. Don't leave."

"I'm sorry," I said. "But there's no other choice."

I pulled away and continued walking.

The crowd parted before me, their faces shocked, angry, heartbroken.

I reached Ravenna's side.

She was crying, shaking her head violently. "Don't. Please don't do this. I'm not worth—"

I took her hand, silencing her with a simple gesture.

Then I turned to face the assembled packs—Mooncrest, Silvercreek, representatives from other territories who'd come to witness the banishment.

My voice carried across the crowd, clear and unwavering.

"Family and pack have always been first for me," I began. "Every decision I've made has been for you. For tradition. For duty. For the future of Mooncrest."

I paused, emotion thickening my voice. "I became who you needed me to be. The perfect son. The obedient heir. The future Alpha who would carry on our legacy."

I felt Ravenna's hand trembling in mine.

"But I've never made a decision for myself," I continued. "Every choice was made for me—who to befriend, what to study, how to lead, even who I was supposed to mate."

I looked down at Ravenna, my eyes meeting hers.

"My first real decision is this."

I turned back to the crowd, my voice growing stronger.

"Ravenna is my mate. Not because the Moon Goddess chose her for me, though she did. Not because of duty or politics or pack alliances. But because she's my heart. My everything. The reason I breathe. The reason I want to wake up every morning."

My mother sobbed louder.

"You banished her without considering how it affects me," I said, my voice harder now. "You severed the mate bond of your future Alpha and expected me to just accept it. To move on and find someone else."

I shook my head. "I can't. Our souls are tied together. I can't exist without her by my side. I would be nothing—less than nothing—without the woman I love."

I squeezed Ravenna's hand. "Which means I'm going with her."

And I stepped across the border, pulling Ravenna with me.

RAVENNA

The crowd erupted in chaos.

Shouting. Crying. People arguing with each other, with themselves, with the reality of what had just happened.

Martina collapsed onto her knees, sobbing so violently her entire body shook.

Richard roared for guards to stop Darius, but it was too late.

The moment Darius crossed that border, he became exiled too.

Packless. Banished. Cut off from everything he'd ever known.

Marcus punched a tree so hard the bark splintered and his knuckles bled.

Sam was screaming Darius's name, her voice raw with anguish.

But Darius didn't look back.

He took my hand firmly and led me into the wilderness.

The sounds of the pack faded behind us—angry voices, inconsolable crying, arguments over what this meant for Mooncrest's future.

We walked in silence for hours.

There was no path to follow, so we just moved away from everything we'd known.

Deeper into the forest. Farther from civilization. Into territory that belonged to no pack.

Rogue territory.

Finally, as the sun began setting, casting long shadows through the trees, Darius stopped.

"We need to rest," he said quietly. "It's getting dark. We should make camp."

I nodded, still too numb to fully accept that this was my life now.

Our life now.

Darius looked around the small clearing we'd stopped in. "Wait here. Don't move an inch."

"Where are you going?" I asked, panic flaring.

"Just to gather wood for a fire," he replied gently. "I'll be right back."

He disappeared into the trees, and I sat down on a fallen log, my legs finally giving out.

Everything felt surreal.

Like I was watching this happen to someone else, not living it myself.

Darius returned with an armful of wood and built a fire with practiced efficiency.

Then he disappeared again and came back with a rabbit he'd somehow caught and killed.

He roasted it over the fire whilst I sat there, staring at the flames.

When the meat was cooked, he offered me some. "You need to eat."

I shook my head. "I'm not hungry."

Darius's expression hardened. "I'm going to get mad if you don't eat. You haven't had a proper meal in days."

I took the food from him, my voice quiet. "Don't be harsh."

"I'm not being harsh," Darius replied. "I'm being practical. You need strength. We both do."

I ate mechanically, tasting nothing.

After we finished, I sat close to him, leaning against his shoulder.

We were homeless now. Packless. Outlawed.

We had nothing but each other and the clothes on our backs.

"I'm so sorry," I whispered, my voice breaking. "You gave up everything for me."

Darius pulled me closer, kissing my temple softly. "I gave up things. But I gained you. That's not a loss, Ravenna. That's everything."

He paused, his voice growing softer. "And it was the first real choice I've ever made. The first decision was truly mine."

In the distance, wolves howled.

Not friendly. Not welcoming.

A warning.

Darius's arm tightened around me protectively. "You should sleep. I'll watch over us tonight."

"How are we going to survive out here?" I asked quietly, fear finally breaking through the numbness.

Darius smiled, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Don't worry about that right now. Let tomorrow worry."

I looked up at him, searching his face. "Any regrets?"

Darius pulled me close and kissed me gently.

When he pulled back, his eyes were fierce and certain. "Never. Not one. I made my decision, and we're going to live by it. Together.”
