Chapter 3 New Life
It’s already afternoon, yet we are still walking down the road thinking about where we should go.
“Ma’am, are you okay? Are your feet okay? Can you still walk?” our maid asked me.
I smiled at her. “ Yes. Don’t be worried about me. What about you? I heard your stomach, it's screaming hahaha!”
"Where are we going, Ma'am? We have no one to approach but ourselves," she said in a sad tone.
I tapped her shoulder "Don't be negative, there are many ways to live." I convinced her with my words, even though I knew that we couldn't survive this situation if we don't have money.
"Don't you know any of your relatives, Ma'am?" she suddenly asked.
I shrugged "The only thing I remembered that was close to us was my mom’s friend."
Her face immediately lit up. "Really? Come on ma'am, let's ask for help!" she said excitedly.
I took a deep breath before answering. "I haven't heard from her anymore. It seems like my mom and her have had a fight since my Dad got married to my Mom."
Her expression immediately changed "Too bad, I thought we could eat, Ma'am." and she laughed shyly.
We sat on the side of the road where not many people were passing by. And we only hear car sounds.
Where are we?
I asked myself.
I looked at the clouds and then took a deep breath. "Dad, wherever you are now, please give us hope to survive. Help us." I whispered softly.
After a few minutes, we were about to stand up to continue walking when we both remembered something.
"OMG!" I screamed in excitement.
I looked at my suitcase and opened it. I immediately saw my laptop and cellphone.
"We can sell this!" I said to our maid.
Her eyes widened and she said these words that gave us hope to survive in this worst situation. "Ma'am! I remembered I have money!" she said happily while taking out a pile of money from her bag.
My eyes widened at what I saw. "Where is that from?"
"This is the salary I saved from working at your house." she said, smiling.
"Is it okay if we use your money first?" I said shyly as my stomach rumbled. It's a sign of hunger.
"Of course, Ma'am! I don't have any family either, so we'll be the only ones to help." I just smiled at what she said, even though I was curious about her life story.
With her unexpected savings, we were able to eat well and find a small apartment that we could live in temporarily.
We are now sitting in our little living room. I faced our maid and asked what had been bothering me.
"Uhmm... is it okay if I call you by your name?" I asked her.
She scratched her eyebrows before answering me. "Yes, Ma'am. You can call me Louise." She extended her hand to me and we shook our hands together. "I am 21 years old, I have no family anymore. My father died in an accident. And in the accident that happened at your house then, my mother was one of the ones who was shot."
I froze. I could not believe what I heard. "W-w-what do you mean?"
"My mom has served your mom for a long time since I was a child. I remember that mom told me a story. She said that your mom was very kind." Tears formed in my eyes.
"Don't you hate my mom? me? our family? Because we are the reason why your mom died." my hands are trembling remembering what happened in the past.
"I have a grudge against your mom. It won't go away. Because I'm sure she had nothing to do with the incident that happened before." she said sadly
I was completely moved to tears by what I found out. My mind came back to my father's death, my mother's almost death, my mother's treatment of me, the way she hurt me and our maid, and the attempt to rape the woman in front of me because of what my mother did.
"I-i am s-sorry..." I couldn't correctly say the words that came out of my mouth.
I was about to wipe my tears when I felt her warm palm on my cheek.
"We are just victims of this world, Marie." I looked at her. She was the first person to call me by my second name.
She continued speaking, "I know you want to make your mom pay for what they did to me, but I don't want to. We don't have the money or ability to fight this case. The only thing I want from you is to know who and why my mom was killed." and she hugged me tightly.
I let go of her embrace and looked her in the eyes. "I promised, I will give justice to your mother's death." I said it with finality.
Two weeks later...
"Louise, I tried to apply as a secretary in a company." I told Louise while she was washing the dishes.
"Really? Did you get accepted?" she asked while wiping the dishes.
"I submitted my resume through an email. Uhmm... I am not expecting to be accepted because I am not a college graduate." I laughed at that thought. "You? Is your new boss treating you well?" I turned to her. She is currently working as a scheduler.
She smiled broadly. "Yes! He is handsome." she giggled
I laughed at her reaction. "Simp."
She rolled her eyes at what I said and continued what she was doing.
I returned my attention to what I was doing.
I have my laptop in front of me as I remember that my birthday is coming up.
"How's Mom doing?" I asked out of a sudden.
"I haven't heard from her either. It's a good thing she wasn't send her bodyguards to find us.." Louise answered suddenly.
"Yeah." I only answered and distracted myself by searching for information about a company I tried to apply to.
Lucesio's Company
I tried to find out who's the boss of this company, but I can't find it. The only information I got from them was the motto of their company.
"Work or die, you choose."
I thought about what I read.
The tasks that the employees are asked to do are probably heaps.
I just shrugged my shoulders at the thought.
I was about to leave the website I was looking at about their company when Louise sat down.
"Lucesio's Company" she said in a low voice. She held her chin and- "What?! are you applying there? Marie? That's one of the most famous companies in the whole country." I winced at the suddenness of what she said.
"You're spitting. Yuck." I reprimanded her as she splashed her saliva on my arm while she was speaking.
"Ow! Sorry, my bad." she said sarcastically and continued speaking. "Are you serious? That's where you tried to apply? That's a famous company, I'm sure only those with a college degree can get into it."
I nodded. "Yeah, I know. That's why I don't expect to be accepted here anymore."
She patted my shoulder. "Don't lose hope. Fighting!" she said last before leaving my side.
I stared at the laptop and turned it off. Then I decided to just go to my room and rest.
"It's already 5 p. m," I said as I lay down on my small bed. I looked up at the ceiling and, after a few minutes, I fell asleep completely.
