Chapter 269 – The Sentinel of the First Architects
Chapter 269 – The Sentinel of the First Architects
The creature’s eyes burned brighter as it stepped forward.
Each movement echoed through the hidden corridor like distant thunder. The ground trembled beneath its weight, ancient dust shaking loose from the carved walls.
Nyra stood her ground, though every instinct inside her screamed caution.
This being was nothing like the Containment Unit.
That construct had been a weapon.
This was something else entirely.
Something older.
The massive Ash Sentinel lowered its head slightly, studying them. The glowing symbols across its stone body shifted and rearranged like living code.
“Unauthorized presence detected,” the deep voice repeated.
“State designation.”
Raze slowly lifted his blade but did not attack.
“Designation?” he muttered. “What are we, paperwork?”
Nyra ignored him and stepped forward.
“I am Nyra,” she said calmly. “Bearer of a Core shard.”
The Sentinel’s eyes flared brighter.
The symbols across its chest pulsed with sudden energy.
“Core bearer confirmed.”
A deep vibration rolled through the corridor.
Then the Sentinel took another step forward.
“System integrity compromised.”
“Hidden layer accessed without authorization.”
Nyra felt the Core shard in her chest respond again, sending waves of warmth through her body.
“I didn’t come here to damage the system,” she said. “I came for answers.”
The Sentinel studied her for a long moment.
Then it spoke again.
“Answers are restricted.”
Raze exhaled slowly.
“Of course they are.”
Lira stepped closer to Nyra, still shaken from the earlier battle.
“You said the door needed multiple Cores,” she whispered. “Maybe this thing knows why.”
Nyra nodded slightly.
She looked up at the towering guardian again.
“Who built the Pyre Network?” she asked.
For the first time, the Sentinel did not answer immediately.
The symbols along its arms dimmed slightly, as if processing the question.
Finally it spoke.
“The Network was constructed by the First Architects.”
Raze raised an eyebrow.
“That sounds very dramatic.”
Nyra ignored him.
“Who were they?”
The Sentinel’s voice rumbled through the chamber.
“An ancient civilization that mastered Ash energy long before the current age.”
Nyra felt her pulse quicken.
“So the Network isn’t just a training ground?”
“No.”
The Sentinel’s glowing eyes flickered.
“It was created as a containment system.”
The words echoed heavily through the corridor.
Raze frowned.
“Containment… for what?”
The Sentinel did not respond right away.
Instead, it slowly turned its head toward the massive circular door behind Nyra.
The one with the Core indentation.
“Primary containment chamber lies beyond that gate.”
Nyra followed its gaze.
Her chest tightened.
“You mean… something is sealed inside?”
“Yes.”
Lira swallowed nervously.
“What kind of thing?”
The Sentinel’s voice dropped lower.
“An entity older than the Architects themselves.”
Raze rubbed his temples.
“Fantastic. Ancient sealed monsters. My favorite.”
Nyra stepped closer to the Sentinel.
“If that thing is sealed behind the door… why create trials and Ashbearers?”
The giant guardian responded instantly.
“To ensure the system remains stable.”
The symbols along the corridor walls suddenly glowed brighter.
“The Network selects individuals capable of controlling Ash energy.”
“Those individuals strengthen the system.”
Nyra understood immediately.
“So the trials are preparing people… to maintain the containment.”
“Correct.”
Raze blinked.
“So this entire giant Network is basically one massive prison?”
The Sentinel’s glowing eyes shifted toward him.
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Nyra looked back at the circular door.
The Core indentation suddenly seemed far more dangerous than before.
“If that door opens…” she began.
“The containment fails,” the Sentinel finished.
Lira stepped backward slightly.
“And the entity escapes?”
“Yes.”
Raze shook his head.
“Then maybe we should leave that door very, very closed.”
Nyra remained silent.
Because something didn’t feel right.
The Core shard in her chest was still pulsing.
But the energy wasn’t warning her away.
It was… pulling her closer.
She looked back up at the Sentinel.
“If the door must stay closed… why does the system require multiple Core bearers?”
The guardian paused again.
For the first time since it appeared, its glowing eyes flickered uncertainly.
“The Architects designed the system to require unanimous Core authorization.”
Nyra frowned.
“So the door can only open if several Core bearers agree?”
“Yes.”
Raze sighed with relief.
“Well that’s good news.”
Nyra wasn’t so sure.
Because the Core shard pulsed again.
Harder this time.
Suddenly the symbols across the circular door flared with blinding light.
The ground shook violently.
The Sentinel turned sharply toward the door.
“Unauthorized activation detected.”
Nyra’s eyes widened.
“I didn’t touch it!”
But the door was already reacting.
The Ash rings began rotating slowly.
Grinding against each other with ancient mechanical sounds.
Lira stared in horror.
“It’s opening!”
Raze stepped back.
“Please tell me that’s not possible.”
The Sentinel’s voice boomed across the chamber.
“External Core signatures detected.”
Nyra froze.
“External…?”
The giant guardian turned its burning gaze toward the dark corridor behind them.
“Additional Core bearers approaching.”
Nyra’s heart sank.
Someone else was coming.
Someone powerful enough to trigger the system.
The door’s glowing rings spun faster.
A deep roar echoed from somewhere beyond the sealed chamber.
Something inside had just woken up.
Raze looked at Nyra slowly.
“I’m guessing the new arrivals aren’t friendly.”
Nyra clenched her fists as Ash energy surged around her hands.
“No,” she said quietly.
“I think they came here to open the prison.”
And the battle for the Network had just begun.
