Chapter 40 Mess In Ethan's Life
Lilly's soft lips moved, as if she wanted to protest. Ethan seemed to read her thoughts and said, "Otherwise... the Johnson Company will likely undergo another personnel reshuffle."
She was in utter despair.
Will this man really die if he doesn't threaten her for even a day? He's clearly asking her to help block the peach blossoms; couldn't he have phrased it more tactfully?
At that moment, the phone Lilly was holding vibrated; it was a call from Karl.
"Hello, Karl..." Lilly replied and looked outside.
"Darling, where are you? Didn't you say you'd wait by the door? Why didn't I see you?" Karl had already pulled out and parked by the door, looking out the car window for Lilly.
Lilly and Ethan were in his blind spot. Karl couldn't find anyone he wanted, so he called her on her cell phone.
"Sorry, I left my bag at the restaurant. I'm back to get it. I'll be right out." Lilly lied, frowning, and her expression wasn't very pleasant. Not wanting to lie to her friend, she quickly apologized and ended the call.
After all, this was a dangerous man standing next to her. What if he said something unpleasant and let her know?
"Take your hand away." Lilly looked at him, who was hugging her tightly, and said unceremoniously, "I'm leaving."
Just when she thought the man in front of her was about to continue pestering her, her restraint vanished.
Ethan removed his hand from her shoulder, glanced at her new phone, and pulled out a new iPhone from his jacket pocket.
Unlike the rose gold color Karl had given her, Ethan's phone was a simple and elegant silver.
"Why?" Lilly carefully covered her rose-gold phone in her hands. Did he want to exchange numbers with her? She didn't.
Ethan's actions since returning were quite unbelievable to her. If he were to say he wanted to exchange numbers with her now, she felt it was very likely.
But he simply pulled her right hand away, shoved the phone into her palm, and then abruptly pulled away.
"What are you doing? What does this mean?" Lilly shook the silver phone doubtfully and asked, "Is this for me?"
He muttered softly, and she became even more confused. "Why did you give me a phone for no reason?"
Seeing that he wasn't responding, Lilly became even more aggressive and insisted on an explanation, asking several questions in quick succession.
There was a slight chill in Ethan's eyes.
Karl gave her the phone, and she obediently accepted it without a word. Why did he give her the phone, and was he so reluctant to take it? And why?
"I can't take it unless you tell me." Lilly received no answer. She followed her conscience and solemnly returned the phone, completely forgetting that he had broken hers earlier.
He grimaced and forced out, "Forgot that I broke your phone?"
"Ah, that thing... forget it." Lilly didn't want to remember what had happened that day and said casually, "But no need, I already have a new one."
"Come on, two is a hassle."
Did she dare complain about problems with the phone he gave her?
Ethan, radiating a cold, oppressive aura, sarcastically curled his sharp lips and said, "This number is specifically for contacting me. According to the contract, you are obligated to cooperate with me in any matters involving Jessica. You must be available 24 hours a day and ready to work at any time."
"...Are you sick?" Lilly was truly drunk. She had never seen such a man. Even if he was handsome, he couldn't exploit someone else's labor so recklessly!
Lilly, hoping to wake the man by scolding him, miscalculated. He smirked and replied, "Didn't you like me before? Am I sick?"
Hearing this, Lilly felt a chill in her heart. Did she really deserve to be bullied by him now, and let her do whatever she wanted just because she liked him before?
"What? Did I say something wrong?" Ethan, seeing her cold expression, suddenly felt irritated. He continued sarcastically, "In the beginning, who was it that blocked me from the office with a bunch of lavender…"
Lilly chuckled twice and interrupted him, "True, but pay attention to the verb tense. Everyone says 'before,' meaning in the past tense. Is it worth talking about now?"
Lilly pushed him away, turned, and quickly walked toward Karl's Hummer.
He watched her leave, his gaze dull and unclear. Had she made it clear to him that he was no longer in her heart?
Even if there's no place for him, he'll find another!
His gaze calmed, he glanced in the direction the Hummer was heading, and he headed toward the car. Just as he was about to open the door, his cell phone rang.
He looked at the name that appeared on the screen, "It was the old head of the Liney that Lilly had mentioned, Jessica's grandfather, the eldest, who had been his friend.
Then he remembered Jessica, whom he had pushed aside. He didn't need to look for her. Jessica waved at him on the road outside and pointed to the phone in his hand.
"Yes," Ethan replied, his voice rarely conveying such respect.
“I heard.. do you have a girlfriend?" The old head of the Liney family's voice was old but full, and it sounded slightly cheerful and mocking. You know, this younger brother, with whom he had a life-or-death friendship, is like a giant ice cube when he's silent, and a poisonous snake capable of putting people to sleep when he speaks.
He was also worried about this guy's future. If things were so difficult for him, how would he ever find a wife?
Even though Ethan is now rich, many women want to marry him.
But Ethan has a strange personality and strange demands. The strange thing is that all the standards that everyone considers good are worthless in his eyes. It's as if he has someone, or a scale, in his heart, and he can't deviate from them even an iota.
It's not that old boss didn't take care of him. After all, he's already 30 years old. Ordinary people who are already fathers. If he marries earlier, he'll have more children. But all the marriages he arranged were ruined by Ethan, so he can only watch as he wanders alone abroad.
