The sealed tunnel stood in front of Kevin, and he understood he had no way out. The walls were blocked by a thick pile of broken rocks, and dust still hovered in the air from the earlier collapse. His breathing grew fast and sharp as he looked around for another escape, but he found nothing. The sound of running feet and loud shouts grew louder behind him.
Kevin pushed Rosa to the ground. She hit the floor hard and let out a weak cry as pain shot through her wounded side. Blood soaked through her clothes. Her hand pressed against the injury, but she struggled to keep her eyes open.
Kevin stepped between her and the incoming footsteps. His hands shook. His chest rose and fell quickly. His mind jumped from one thought to another. One moment, he whispered, “I can still win,” and the next moment, he shouted into the darkness, “You will not take everything from me!”
Rosa tried to push herself up. Her arms trembled. “Kevin… stop this… You can still walk away,” she whispered.
Kevin spun toward her. “Be quiet! Keegan will break once he sees you like this. He will beg me to stop. I only need to hold you long enough.”
Rosa felt her head spinning, but she forced herself to stay awake. “My children… please… do not touch them.”
Kevin let out a loud angry sound. “They are nothing to me! Keegan is the one I want. And he will fall when he sees you suffer.”
Behind them, the triplets stayed hidden under broken wood and stones in the previous chamber. They covered their mouths and tried not to make a sound.
Suddenly, the heavy footsteps reached the mouth of the corridor.
Keegan arrived.
He burst into the narrow passage with five of his strongest warriors. His chest tightened when he saw Rosa lying on the floor, pale and shaking. The sight of the blood on her clothes made his heart pound harder.
“Kevin!” Keegan shouted. “Step away from her. Now.”
Kevin raised his head slowly. His eyes twitched, and a strange smile appeared on his face. “You came. Good. This ends here.”
Keegan stepped forward. “Move away from her. You will not touch her again.”
Kevin laughed. “Or what? You think you can stop me? You think you can win now? You are already too late.”
Keegan’s voice dropped. “I will not say it again. Move.”
Kevin charged.
He threw himself at Keegan with all his strength. The narrow tunnel forced both men to fight close to each other with no room to escape. Their bodies crashed together. Kevin swung wildly, hitting Keegan’s shoulder, then his ribs.
Keegan blocked each strike with strong movements. “You hurt her!” he shouted as he pushed Kevin back.
Rosa watched with blurry eyes. Her voice came out weak. “Keegan… please… be careful…”
Keegan answered without looking back. “Hold on, Rosa. I am coming.”
Kevin grabbed a broken piece of rock from the ground and struck at Keegan’s head. Keegan ducked just in time, and the rock hit the wall, breaking into pieces.
The walls shook. Small stones fell from the ceiling.
Keegan punched Kevin in the stomach, forcing him back a step. Kevin stumbled, then rushed in again, swinging harder than before. His movements became unpredictable, wild, and dangerous.
One of Keegan’s warriors shouted, “Alpha, the tunnel is becoming unstable! We need to end this fast!”
Another warrior replied, “We cannot pull back. Rosa is here!”
Kevin slashed his arm across Keegan’s face, leaving a bloody cut on his cheek. Keegan ignored the pain, grabbed Kevin’s wrist, and twisted it. Kevin howled but did not stop. He kicked Keegan’s knee and tried to push past him.
Keegan blocked him and shoved him back toward the collapsed wall.
Kevin’s eyes widened when he realized he was being cornered.
“No!” he shouted. “I will not be trapped! I will not lose!”
He tried to pass Keegan again, but Keegan’s warriors stepped in behind him, closing the corridor.
Kevin was surrounded.
“You have nowhere to go,” Keegan said. “Stop fighting.”
Kevin breathed heavily. His chest shook. Sweat ran down his face. His hands curled into fists. “I will never surrender.”
He let out a roar and charged again.
Keegan met him head-on.
Their bodies slammed against each other with full force. Keegan drove Kevin backward. Kevin tried to stab at Keegan’s throat with a sharp rock, but Keegan grabbed his arm and pushed it down.
The two men struggled, muscles straining, breathing loud and rough.
Kevin tried one last move to break free. He twisted, swung his knee at Keegan, and reached for another stone. But Keegan was faster.
He blocked Kevin’s arm and hammered his fist into Kevin’s chest.
Kevin stumbled.
Keegan struck again.
Kevin fell to his knees.
Keegan grabbed him by the shirt. “This ends now.”
Kevin growled, weak but angry. “Keegan… you think you won… but you lost the moment you loved her…”
Keegan did not let him finish.
He struck the final blow.
Kevin hit the ground and did not get back up. His eyes closed. His body went still.
Silence filled the tunnel.
Only the soft sound of Rosa’s breathing remained.
Keegan dropped to his knees beside her. He touched her face gently. “Rosa, stay with me. I am here.”
Rosa looked up with tired eyes. “You… came… I knew you would come…”
Keegan brushed her hair aside. “Of course I came. You are safe now. I promise you.”
One of the warriors knelt beside them. “Alpha, she needs a healer now. She is losing blood fast.”
Keegan lifted Rosa carefully into his arms. She winced in pain, and he held her closer. “I know. We are taking her out.”
The warriors hurried back toward the chamber behind them. There, they searched the shadows for the triplets.
“Over here!” a warrior shouted.
Keegan turned in that direction.
The triplets crawled out from behind the debris, crying. Their faces were dirty and wet with tears. They ran toward Keegan.
“Papa!” one of them cried. “Mama is hurt!”
Keegan tried to stay calm for them. “Mama will be okay. I am taking her to the healers now.”
Rosa reached out weakly toward the children. “My babies… I am here… do not cry…”
A healer rushed into the chamber with bandages, herbs, and a small torch. She knelt beside Keegan. “Alpha, we must move. The tunnels are shaking. They may collapse.”
As if on cue, the walls trembled again. Dust rained down from above.
Keegan nodded. “Everyone out now! Carry the injured!”
Warriors spread through the tunnels, pulling wounded fighters from both sides. Some shouted for help; others carried bodies on their backs. The whole underground base groaned as the fighting above ground weakened its structure.
Keegan carried Rosa out himself. Her head rested against his shoulder. Her breathing was slow but steady.
As they reached the upper ground, cool air touched their skin. The noise of battle above had already faded. Word had spread fast through the kingdom:
Kevin had fallen.
Guards loyal to Kevin dropped their weapons and ran. Others surrendered to Keegan’s warriors. The neutral clans who joined Keegan now stepped fully to his side, helping escort families to safety and guard the borders.
Healers rushed to help the injured. Elders came out of hiding with relief on their faces. Warriors shouted orders to restore order in the kingdom. Supplies were rushed to the surface. Tents and medical stations were set up everywhere.
Keegan turned to one of the commanders. “Clear the tunnels. No one stays below. They may collapse at any moment.”
“Yes, Alpha!”
Rosa was placed on a stretcher and given more treatment. The triplets stayed beside her, holding her hands. Keegan stood over them, eyes focused on Rosa, refusing to step away.
A loud crash echoed underground as a major section of the tunnels caved in. Dust rose into the air.
Kevin’s base was no more.
But Rosa and her children were safe.
And the kingdom had begun to settle again.
