Chapter 92 Sugar Level

Chapter 92 Sugar Level
JESSICA

HOURS LATER........

I bit my lips while staring at Michael's name tag on his office door.

I am having difficulty bringing myself to knock.

I am done with my shift and right now, I am standing here and trying to see my boyfriend before leaving.

Cause we said we would see today.

I didn't get a call or text from him all through my shift and I didn't call him either.

I guess we are both busy and....

Okay, Jessica, just knock and go see him.

Stop stalling.

I took in a breath and let it out before knocking.

"Come in," his voice made my heart pick up.

I grabbed the doorknob and opened the door.

I found him standing close to the windows dressed in his lab coat as always and staring at a chart in his hand.

He looked at me and a smile formed on his face.

I smiled as well.

"Hey," he said, placing the chart on his desk as I walked towards him.

"Hey."

He leaned in and kissed my lips, making my heart react.

He pulled away, smiling at me.

Okay. He is not irritated by me.

The kiss just confirms it.

"I missed you today. I was about to call you right after I am done with this," he gestured at the chart on the desk. "But you are here."

I nodded. "I missed you too."

He reached for my cheek, caressing it.

"Did you have a good sleep?"

I nodded. "Yes. Thanks again for coming to get me."

"Nah. Stop thanking me. You are my girl and my priority."

My heart melted as I smiled at him.

"Are you done with your shift?"

"Yes. A few minutes ago."

"So.....home it is, right?"

I nodded.

"Why don't we go out for lunch first and then I will drop you off?"

I smiled again. "That sounds great."

He smiled as well, cupping my cheeks and leaning in for another kiss but....

"Yo, Mikey," a familiar voice and the opening of the door interrupted.

Justin walked into the office in his lap coat and holding a chart in his hand.

I furrowed my brows at him as he stared at us.

"Oh," he said. "Why hello,"

"Dude, there is something called knocking," Michael said, making me look at him.

He is staring at Justin.

They know each other?

Justin huffed. "Sorry, man. I didn't know you did these things as well. I thought you were more professional than the profession. Wait, aren't you the nurse from the same floor as Ashley?"

I looked at him.

His face twitched. "You are. The nerd nurse like she always calls you," he said, chuckling.

I scoffed internally. Wow.

"Don't do that, Justin," Michael warned.

"What? Look at her. She is really a..."

"Speak to my girlfriend with respect or get the fuck out." Michael blurted, surprising me.

I looked at him.

He is scowling at Justin.

"Okay. I apologize, man. Geez." Justin said.

"Not to me," Michael said.

Justin heaved a sigh, making me look at him.

His eyes moved to me.

"I apologize, nurse," he said, scoffing slightly.

I rolled my eyes, averting my eyes from him.

That apology wasn't genuine. He is a jerk.

"Damn, man, you didn't tell me you have a girlfriend now. How do you of all people make out time for....."

"Can you just tell me what brought you here?" Michael retorted.

"The little girl, Mira, has another complication in her spine. We need to operate on her right now." Justin said.

"What do you mean another complication?"

"It is right here, man," Justin said.

"Let me see,"

Justin approached us and handed the chart to Michael.

I rested my eyes on Michael as he examined the chart. His face twitched and he looked at Justin.

"This is strange."

"I know. We need to go right now." Justin said.

Michael looked my way.

I nodded. "It's okay. We can do lunch tomorrow."

He heaved a sigh. "I am sorry, babe. I promise nothing will stop lunch tomorrow."

I nodded, reaching for him and kissing his cheek.

He smiled at me.

"Bye," I said, smiling before walking past Justin and towards the door. I opened the door and walked out.

Closing the door, I stood still and rested my eyes on the floor as my ears did the trick.

"Seriously, man, her?" I heard Justin asked.

"What is your problem?" I heard Michael said.

"You, dude. You barely have time for yourself. Now you've decided to date and you chose that nerd?"

I scoffed internally.

"I am one more disrespect from you away from punching your fucking face, Justin." Michael threatened, making me smile.

"Come on, man..."

I walked away from the door, heading towards the elevator. I took it to my floor and headed to the front desk.

I have to pick up my bag and head home.

I am craving pasta and meatballs.

Getting to the front desk, I found two familiar nurses seated there and busy with their work.

Cath must be at the locker room or on her way home.

I was about to walk past the desk when I saw Cath's familiar note on it.

I walked closer and reached for it, claiming the nurses' attention.

"Oh, Catherine forgot that." One of the nurses said.

"Is she in the locker room or...."

"She already left." the other nurse said.

"Okay. I will keep it for her." I said, attempting to walk away but I almost bumped into someone.

Head nurse Miriam.

Oh geez.

"Jessica, you are still here?" Miriam asked.

"I was about to leave."

"Okay," she said, moving past me towards the desk. I took steps ahead when...

"We have the former commissioner in one of the VIP wards right now."

I froze.

"Low sugar level and uh..."

I looked at Miriam. She is reading from the file in her hands.

Did she just say former commissioner?

Uncle Brad?

"Ruth, you are in charge of the ward. It is VIP ward eight."

"The former commissioner as in Mr Brad Sterling?" I asked, making everyone look at me.

I rested my eyes Okwa Miriam, expecting an answer.

"Yes."

Oh my God.

"Why are you....."

"Excuse me please," I retorted, running past her and heading towards the VIP wards as my heart pounded.

God, please not Uncle Brad.

I walked past some doors till I got to ward eight.

I saw Uncle Brad on the bed through the small glass on the door.

God, it's really him.

I opened the door, claiming his attention.

I saw Alex as well.

"Jessica," Uncle called.

"Uncle Brad," I called as I walked towards him.

He is smiling at me.

I placed my hand on his arm as I looked at his body. An IV drip is connected to his wrist and he looks dull.

"What happened to you?" I asked, looking at him.

"Nothing serious, princess. The doctor said I will be fine," he said, holding my hand.

"His sugar level dropped again," Alex said, making me look at him. He is standing at the end of the bed.

"Uncle, you promised to be good with your sugar level."

He opened his mouth to speak but....

Alex scoffed. "He is a very stubborn man, Jess. You know that."

I heaved a sigh.

"I can still punch you from here, young man." Uncle said.

"Yeah right."

"Ignore him, princess. I am working on it." Uncle Brad said, smiling at me.

"You know that's a lie, Brad." A familiar male voice caught my attention, making my heart pick up.

It was Uncle Xavier.

I gulped as I stared at him.

His eyes are on me as he approaches from the restroom dressed in a blue shirt with the first three buttons open and black pants. His hands are in his pockets, exposing his chest more.

"Your son is right. You are the most stubborn man I have ever met."

I forced my eyes away from him, resting them on Uncle Brad.

Uncle Brad scoffed, moving his eyes to me.

"Pay no attention to these two punks, princess. I am going to help myself from now on. I promise."

Alex scoffed. "Typical"

"Shut up," Uncle Brad snapped.

I held his hand with my two hands, making him look at me.

"You need to mean it this time, uncle. I don't like seeing you like this."

He heaved a sigh.

"You really need to work on your sugar level, please,"  I begged, feeling tears approaching.

I can't help but think about the worst if he doesn't listen. Apart from David and Alex, he is the most important man in my life right now.

I don't feel good when I see either of them like this.

"I promise you, princess. I will do better henceforth, okay?"

I nodded.

He reached for my cheek, caressing it and smiling at me.

I smiled as well.

Next, I heard Uncle Xavier's phone ring out.

I didn't let myself look his way as I sensed him taking a step.

"Excuse me," he said, heading out of the ward.

That's good.

Finally a good energy.

"The three of us were out for lunch and I fainted at the damn restaurant." Uncle Brad said.

I shook my head.

"Xavier was fast enough to bring us here."

My heart picked up again.

"That punk might act like he doesn't care but he will go out of his way to keep us safe."

I lowered my gaze, suppressing my reacting heart.

"Um....a nurse is on her way here with your file to check on you," I said, changing the topic.

He nodded.

"Wait, aren't you his nurse?" Alex asked.

I shook my head. "I am done for the day. I was about to leave when I overheard them talking about Uncle in the VIP ward. I had to come as quickly."

"They just had to get my princess worried," Uncle said, caressing my cheek. "They should have allowed you to go home after a long day. You need to rest. I can see the stress on your eyes."

I held his hand resting on my cheek.

"She would find out about your state eventually, Dad." Alex chipped in. "If you care so much about her getting stressed out then you should help yourself."

"Alex, please," I said.

"He needs to know the truth, Jess. He is fucking stubborn."

I heaved a sigh, moving my eyes to Uncle Brad.

"Let's just pretend he is not here. Cause he isn't, right?" Uncle asked.

Alex huffed.

I smiled at Uncle.

So did he.

"I'll go get the nurse right away," I said.

"Okay, dear."

I leaned in and kissed his temples before looking at Alex.

He looked at me.

"Be nice to him," I ordered.

He huffed.

"Alex,"

"Yes, ma'am."

I averted my eyes from him as I walked towards the door. I opened it and walked out.

Closing the door, I was about to take my right when I saw Uncle Xavier leaning his right shoulder on the wall close to the door, staring at me.

My heart picked up like it's on a routine!

Race the minute you lock eyes with Uncle Xavier.

"Hello, Nurse Jessica," he said.

I averted my eyes from him, taking steps to walk past him but he blocked my way with his hand, stopping me in my tracks.

"Stop running, fireball,"

I took a step back, looking away and letting out a sigh.

God, what on earth does this demon want?!

"You looked very worried back in there about your uncle Brad."

Yes. And?

"I have never seen you that worried like that about me."

I looked at him.

Excuse me?

"Oh right. What was that you said last night?"

I kept staring at him.

"I am not even your real uncle. I am just your dad's friend huh?"

I looked away, scoffing internally.

"But the last time I checked, Brad is also not your real uncle. He is your dad's friend just like I am. Or am I missing something?"

I nodded, looking at him. "Yes, Mr Cole. You are missing something."

He stared at me.

"Uncle Brad might not be my real uncle like you but he is more than a real uncle."

He hummed.

"Yes. He has been nothing but good and nice to me ever since I have known him. Unlike some demons who have been nothing but a horrible person to me all my life."

He kept staring at me.

"And speaking of being worried about you like I am about Uncle Brad right now, I was worried about you when you were admitted to this hospital some time ago. I took time from caring for other patients to checking on you constantly till you woke up. But what did I get from you?"

No response.

"Can you remind me, sir?"

No response.

"Your mean and harsh words just because I called everyone to tell them about your state. Tell me how is calling the people you call family about your state a bad thing?"

He kept staring at me.

"No idea, right? But it was a bad thing for you. It is fine though. I have learned my lesson. But I want to say this one last time, Mr Cole. Stay away from me."

He is still staring.

"I don't want to ever speak to you again. Stay far away from me, got it?"

No response.

I think he did.

Good.

I attempted to walk past him but he grabbed my arm, making my blood boil.

I snatched my hand from his hold.

"What on earth is your problem?!"

He opened his mouth to speak but.....

"What the fuck is going on here?" A female voice caught our attention.

It was Kendra.

She is looking between Uncle and me.

Great.

Just great.
