Chapter 328 Final Chapter
Chapter 328 Final Chapter
He walked up close and had someone open the coffin lid.
Looking at that face, so thin it was just skin and bones, Donny took a deep breath, not knowing what to say.
That day by the river, Ambrose wasn't dead yet.
At the time, with his doctor's instinct, he could already tell that William was dying.
William was not only in terrible mental shape, but also had severe self-destructive tendencies.
He had also learned from Dylan that William slept very little and ate even less.
All the evidence showed that William didn't have much time left.
That's why he tried to stop Ambrose.
Unfortunately, he failed in the end.
"Mr. Dickson..."
Dylan slowly spoke up, taking out a business card from his pocket.
He held it out to Donny and said,
"I'd like to hire you to be the orphanage's medical caretaker."
"Please don't refuse."
Donny looked at the gold-embossed name on the card: Isabella Welfare Home.
He didn't reach out to take it, just smiled and looked away.
"Dylan, if you want to find a doctor, there are plenty in this world."
"I'm not a doctor anymore."
"Just a disabled man who looks after a cemetery."
Seeing he wouldn't agree, Dylan stopped pressing.
But he said, "Mr. Dickson, I'm not a secretary anymore either. I'm the director of the welfare home now."
"Mr. Spencer's last wish was simply to give those children without families, or those who have families but receive no fatherly or motherly love, a home."
He was clearly talking about orphans, yet every word he spoke fit Isabella perfectly.
Dylan felt a bitter pang in his heart as he looked at these fragile young plants on the hillside.
"If you ever need anything in the future, just ask."
"Even though Mr. Spencer is gone, we're still friends."
Donny shook his head.
"I don't need anything."
"There are flowers and grass on the mountain, and I have hands and feet."
"I won't starve to death."
He told the workers to dig another grave.
Of the three graves, Ambrose lay in the left one, Isabella in the middle, and William in the right.
This was the one thing Dylan did against William's wishes.
William's will had specified that his body should be cremated and the ashes flushed down the drain.
He wanted to erase the last trace of himself from this world.
But Dylan really couldn't bring himself to do it.
He could only have a crystal coffin made for William, just like Isabella's.
Then he brought both of them to the hillside, leaving the decision to Donny.
Fortunately, Donny didn't refuse.
When he learned from Dylan that William didn't want to be buried next to Isabella, he deliberately put Isabella in the middle, making William lie beside her.
It was a small act of revenge.
But in his heart, he actually envied the two of them.
After all, now Isabella had neighbors on both sides.
When he died, he wouldn't be able to stay by Isabella's side anymore.
Donny sat by those three graves until dark.
As the moonlight fell, his lonely figure stood among the wildflowers and grass.
He seemed like a small peak, blending into the hillside.
He sat until dawn without standing up.
Stars twinkled in the night sky, and crickets chirped in the grass.
Donny kept the three graves company, waiting for dawn to come.
When a pale light appeared on the horizon, and golden sunlight slowly rose to drive away the darkness,
Donny slowly stood up and stretched.
Limping, he turned around and looked at the red sun in the sky.
"It's daybreak."
Donny tilted his head and said softly.
He limped back to the small cabin, shouldered his hoe, and put on his straw hat.
He pulled up the extra weeds in the shade, one by one.
He worked all morning, his hair soaked with sweat, but still didn't feel tired.
Since becoming a farmer and cemetery keeper, he found he had far fewer worries.
Every day, he worked from sunrise to sunset.
When he had free time, he sat in front of the tombstones, talking to the people in those three graves.
"Ambrose, why haven't you visited me in a dream?"
"Did you find Isabella or not? Is she refusing to see you?"
"If she won't see you, tell her that William can't stop her anymore."
His gaze slowly turned to the middle tombstone.
His eyes became much gentler.
"Isabella, even though I made William stay by your side, you don't need to be afraid."
"He's not Mr. Spencer anymore, and his relatives are about to strip away even his surname."
"If he can't be a Spencer anymore, why not let him take your surname?"
"Here, he has no subordinates to help him. If Ambrose and I team up, he definitely won't stand a chance."
At this point, he laughed foolishly at himself.
Then he turned his gaze to William's tombstone.
"From now on, you just stay here quietly."
Spring passed, and winter came and went again.
The sunflowers on the hillside were bright yellow.
All the sunflowers Donny planted had bloomed and produced full seeds.
The three tombstones stood quietly.
White flowers grew all around them.
A white butterfly fluttered its wings and landed on Donny's straw hat.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead, holding a sunflower in his hand.
He sat among those white flowers, keeping watch by Isabella's tombstone.
Murmuring, "Isabella, look, the flowers have bloomed."
The End.
