Chapter 293 Benjamin’s Gift
William had come at the worst possible time. He waited by the bedside for an hour, just to see whether Benjamin could still wake up.
Although the caregiver kept assuring him that he really had seen it with his own eyes, that Benjamin's fingers had moved, William was still disappointed in the end.
Before leaving, he sealed the gift he had prepared in a cardboard box and wrapped it over and over with tape.
He looked at the caregiver and said calmly,
"When this patient wakes up, please give this to him yourself."
"Tell him this gift is from a girl named Juniper."
Before William left, he casually slipped the caregiver $100,000.
This $100,000 was a special bonus, on top of his regular pay.
The caregiver took the money and naturally agreed with delight.
He pulled the curtains halfway open and watched the group of people leave from a distance.
"It's good to be rich."
"But this boss is really generous."
"Mr. Spencer, don't worry, I'll definitely put this gift into his hands myself."
Warm sunlight shone on him, streaming through the half-open curtains onto the hospital room floor.
Benjamin lay in the hospital bed, his fingers moving slightly again.
He lay in a corner where the sunlight couldn't reach. By the time the caregiver turned around again, Benjamin's hand had gone back to its comatose stillness.
William drove straight to the overpass and told Dylan to bring Juniper over.
The doctor's warning was like a guiding light to him. Since the doctor said they couldn't have sex, William was determined to do the opposite.
As Juniper's belly grew bigger, her mental state wasn't as lively as before.
She seemed to have fallen into prenatal depression. When she saw William, she no longer crawled over on her own to rub her cheek against his foot, nor did she bark like a dog anymore.
Today, Juniper crawled very slowly. When she was led out of the car, she stayed in place and refused to move.
No matter how hard Dylan pulled the chain, one of Juniper's hands just gripped the tire tightly and wouldn't let go.
Seeing her like this, Dylan scolded her coldly.
"Juniper, what are you trying to pull now?"
Juniper looked up at him and said weakly,
"Dylan, I really need a blanket."
"At night in the cage, I've been feeling so cold, and my belly hurts from the cold too."
"Please give me a blanket."
She looked at Dylan pitifully. Now she had lost all her weapons and disguises.
She no longer had any cards left to play.
She no longer held any hope for the future.
She was just trying to live one day at a time, to make herself a little less miserable.
Compared to Isabella, Juniper felt she was lucky.
At least she had survived until now.
It was too cold at night. After her pregnant belly got chilled, she kept feeling sharp pains in her stomach.
It wasn't like the pain from external injuries. Sometimes the pain made her cry, and she felt as if her belly didn't even belong to her anymore.
This was the second time she had actively asked someone for help since being locked in the dog cage and stripped of her human identity.
Juniper thought her sincerity should at least change Dylan's mind.
Her request was really simple; she just wanted a blanket.
In the past, she would never have begged anyone for a blanket.
She just had to flaunt her charm, and men would rush to satisfy her.
But she had already failed twice, both times just for a blanket.
She still couldn't change Dylan's mind.
Juniper felt her approach was really childish and ridiculous.
In the past, she wore a mask and always got what she wanted. Now that her disguise had been torn away and she had bared the softest part of her heart,
no one was willing to believe a single word she said.
"Juniper, stop pretending to be pitiful."
Dylan's cold voice mercilessly threw her wish into the mud.
No matter how she begged, she couldn't climb out of that mud pit.
The rest of her life would only rot in the mud.
"I don't like hitting women, but that doesn't mean I won't hit you."
Juniper shook her head in weak defense. "Just give me a blanket, and you can do whatever you want to me."
She suddenly spread her legs and thrust out her chest.
One hand cupped half of her breast.
"Even those homeless men can enjoy my breasts now."
"Dylan, I'm begging you, give me a blanket."
Dylan took a deep breath, forcing down his anger.
He yanked on the chain, no longer holding back.
At the same time, he kicked at the arm she had wrapped around the tire.
Juniper finally let go. She lay on the ground with her butt raised high, trying not to let her belly touch the ground.
Then she buried her face in the dirt and started crying.
The way she cried was strange.
Because Dylan had never seen anyone cry over not getting a blanket.
He absolutely didn't believe Juniper was crying because he had kicked her hand.
He had seen how William hit people. Whether stepping on her hand or knocking out her teeth, all of it had been much worse than his kick.
In the distance, William watched quietly without interfering.
A smile hung on his face.
He stood in the sunlight, as if he were watching two kids fight.
Amused, he sat down on the car roof.
Dylan felt William's gaze on him. This chain had always been in William's hands before.
This was his first time having full control of the chain, and he still felt uncomfortable.
He could only drag Juniper, gripping the chain with both hands, hauling her along like a dead dog.
Juniper's neck was stretched out. Her hands were scraped raw by the stones on the ground, dust, and tiny pebbles, all ground into the bloody flesh.
She cried even louder, just like a four-year-old child whose favorite toy had suddenly been taken away.
The homeless men had already gathered around.
They surrounded Juniper in the middle. One bold man asked,
"Can I play with the chain for a bit?"
Dylan looked toward William in the distance. Seeing that he still showed no reaction, Dylan nodded and handed over the chain.
The homeless man happily grabbed the chain. As he dragged Juniper along, he hummed and shook his head.
"Little doggy, little doggy, let's go."
"The dogs back home love to eat shit. I'll take you to find some shit."
Dylan stood there, stunned, finding it funny and nauseating at the same time.
Those homeless men all crowded together, following behind.
The man holding the dog chain really dragged Juniper to the place where they relieved themselves.
Even Dylan couldn't watch anymore.
The scene was too disgusting, making him bend over and dry heave.
He looked at the bloody handprints and drag marks on the ground.
He could hear Juniper's cries in the distance.
"I don't want to, it's so disgusting, too disgusting."
"What is this smell?"
"Let me go."
