136: Rising Tensions
Hayley's POV
A heaviness still clung to the air as if no war had ever taken place here. Relief surged through me as the rogue leader lay dead, but it did not last. I knew this wasn't the end.
Aiden stood to my left, a sturdy presence. And I could still see the weight of that fight in him, as if what it cost him was etched into his very soul-a pain we all knew so well when he came home to us living. Our fingers laced together in a mutual gesture of comfort, and I instantly mourned.
I ventured a suggestion in hushed tones: "We better go see how the others are.
Hesitantly, a tired but thankful smile graced his lips. We check in: all good back there.
They filed out in the clearing and formed a pack around us, all of them giving thanks, each offering words of appreciation. They were strong, every one of them a silent proof that there was power in the unity we had created. But more than just family, we were united by purpose and by unfailing loyalty to one another.
Liam, one of our best fighters, sweat soaked through his brow as he bellowed for encouragement from afar, "Hayley!" Demon-slayer jumped into the dungeon, eyes scanning their surroundings. "We've taken out a good number of these things or imprisoned them-the Dust Devils and Hot Gates."
"Same here, here," Aiden was dead serious. "Making sure that we continue to stay diligent.
I felt a spike of pride as I took in Aiden, his command-calling parts turning to our pack. But underneath, I felt his anxiety-a fear that reminded me of my own.
"How are you holding up?" Hush my words so that only he heard.
And he took my hand, a tender gesture that was almost comical in the way his eyes reflected fatigue. "I'm okay, thanks to you."
Saying so, he smiled, and warmth spread through me. "Remember, we are all in this together!"
There was a blatant relief in his gaze when it softened, the weight of the world fading for just one heartbeat as we stood amidst all that chaos. These heists of time were what gave us strength; this relationship where bloodlines met was our hope.
As peaceful as that made me feel, it was all over soon. My eyes were drawn to rustling in the trees, and I saw sable shade slithering through shadows. Then, I saw a flash of the rogue leader-bruisted and swollen but unbroken, rage smoldering in his eyes.
Did you think destroying me would be this easy? His voice was a venomous hiss, taunting. "This isn't over."
He pressed down on me with such great force that I was barely able to kick out before he moved his body like a spring and attacked. Aiden and I worked as one, our link feeding us everything we needed to withstand his assaults.
The onslaught was restored to life with a violence that literally wound me. My heart raced in my chest as I commanded forth the part of me that used to be... The earth responded; it belonged to me. Its energy ran through me, powerful and potent, all at once exciting but also scaring the bejesus out of your magnitude.
"Aiden!" I shouted, my words slicing the air with something like fear. "We need to push him back!"
His face spread out in all the hard lines of determination, and he nodded. Side by side, we fought with all our might, each blowing a living representation of how unbreakable both we and our wills were.
As soon as the rogue leader emerged, his attacks were unceasing and fueled by desperation and anger. AIiiEE! The final desperate cry escaped him, dungeon imploding into a last shuddering attack on them.
Pain wormed its way through me, and I doubled down even harder against it till the ground trembled at my feet. An overwhelming sense of desperation ripped through my bones, but I was a mother, so somehow I managed to contain it.
Aiden was by me in a second, and that alone calmed the storm of learning. "Hayley, focus on your power. You can do this."
His words pinned me down as a memory of that strength.
I closed my eyes, feeling the bond. The love that had gotten us through everything.
I inhaled deeply, then extended my senses into the skin of the earth below me. As I called to it, flooding myself with the energy, it answered by boiling up in me.
The ground exploded with barriers of rock and soil, which blocked the rogue leader's path. He was growling now, teeth bared in anger as he fought against those restraints.
Aiden insisted, his voice filled with resolution: "We need to fix this."
I nodded, putting all the power I had into it. The earth trembled underfoot, a low growl reverberating through the glade.
Our hands held him down, and we used our will as one to reduce his violent frenzy so no manacle ever could. He lunged for Aiden, a cruel smile crossing his face.
Panic raced through my veins, and all I could think about was Aiden. I stood up without a second thought, knowing I would do whatever it took to save him.
My movement had caught Aiden's attention, and he called upon his strengths to counter the rogue leader. Our combined forces surged forth, a testament to the bond between us that was unbreakable.
The bandana-rogue leader stumbled backwards as our coordinated attacks took their toll on him. He screamed one last time as he withdrew from sight, promising to return more powerful in number before his parting.
The dust settled back around, reverting into silence-eerie peace after the raging tempest. I looked at Aiden and released a small breath when I realized he was unhurt.
Lowering my voice and shaking with emotion, I declared, "We did it.".
He wrapped me in his arms, placing a healing touch on my tired spirit.
"Together," he murmured, placing a soft kiss on my forehead.
And, in his arms, the rest of the world disappeared. Just him and me. The light that shone against the lot of darkness that surrounded us was our love for each other.
But when we hugged, my cold thoughts melted away, and I still felt that something was just getting started. Those words of the rogue leader passed in my thoughts like a cold wind. An omen, what lay before us?
"Do we need to be prepared??" I whispered, pulling back a bit so our eyes met. "He'll be back."
Aiden nodded, a grave but resolute look coming over him. Whatever comes together?
Not only was it his word, but the vow strengthened me. We were together, come what might; nothing would ever separate us.
With the clearing bathed in soft morning light, I felt inspired. This adventure had only just begun, but as long as I had Aiden and our pack with me, we could do it all.
We would face our past shadows together and make a future of hope, filled with love.
