Chapter 137: Whispers of Betrayal

Aiden's POV

We gathered after the battle, and you could see it in our faces still hanging there, like the scent within wounded earth, which we are tending to as a pack. Every time we lost one, it was like a cut to our heart, reminding us of the cost for every life saved.

The silence that fell over the clearing after they had won was a grave one. We healed silently as we fed on the remnants of battles waged far too long. I had sat and watched with a twinge in my heart as Hayley kneeled next to the moans of an injured resident, soothing them back to reality.

"How are you holding up?" I questioned as she wrapped a strip of cloth around the arm of a youth warrior. She looked up this time, in her visible two green eyes full of something painful but equally determined. "Simply put, I wish it didn't have to be that way.

I nodded with a sinking heart; we all knew how she felt. "We'll get through this. Together."

The undeniable rhythm of our communication styles as we worked next to each other brought me comfort in knowing the way we moved through issues had remained unchanged even though everything around us felt different. Even after it all, we kept our bond steadfast to the very end-a shining beacon through that dark, dismal night.

After helping the wounded, we met in a circle to remember those who had not made it. It was a brief yet powerful ceremony, paying homage to the courage and dedication of those pack members we had lost. When those names were said, I heard the slip-click of leadership locking around my neck and onto my shoulders-a solemn burden that belonged partly to anxiety and somewhat to mourning.

So after the ceremony, Hayley and I slipped off to a secluded area at one end of the clearing. The sky was lit with the warm light of dusky sunset, and I allowed myself a moment to soak in much-needed peace.

"Thank you for being my rock," Hayley whispered as she collapsed into me, the two of us overlooking the horizon. She was there like a warm vessel, reminding me of the tenderness that held us all.

I put an arm around her, pulling her in. "Ah-ah, we wouldn't be here without you, Hayley. You give me hope."

That was, until she smiled that little smile of hers-aa warm and forgiving one at that. And we sat there together, soaking in the blizzard of calm and breathing through a bond that had been tested time after time.

The peace was not wasted, but it did also quickly disappear. Something else moved in the overhead tree, and I froze as natural lubricant before reaching my hand out to grab hay.

"Did you hear that?" "Some very silent projectors," she whispered, her eyes darting around the vegetation.

I nodded; suddenly all senses were alert within me. "Stay close." We made our way as stealthily as we could manage, and soon enough the distinct chirp and excited whispers of other people reached us from a secluded island across some trees. The closer we crept, the clearer the conversation.

A voice hissed angrily, saying, "I told you it would fail." "They're too strong."

Another voice, cool and clear with perfect patience. "We'll find another way."

My heart thudded in my chest as the truth finally made itself known-a traitor amongst us. My eyes met with a shocked Hayley, who looked as perplexed and confused as I felt.

"Who could it be?" Her voice was hardly more than a whisper.

I winced, and my betrayal felt heavy in the pit of my stomach. "We need to find out."

After the voices faded, we hurried back to safety at our clearing, hearts pounding and minds spinning with what it was that they had been talking about. The thought that someone from our pack could do something to hurt us was both disturbing and a threat to the trust we have formed.

Hayley kept her voice steady to mask the turmoil in her eyes. We cannot allow this to divide us.

I nodded, determination cemented my vengeance. "We'll figure this out. Together."

With the upcoming night, we arrived at the center of the group with our discovery weighing us down. Yet throughout all of the uncertainty, I felt clear on one thing. We would get to the bottom of it, whatever that truth was, and protect our family at all costs.

That night, after the moon had reached its peak in a star-filled sky, Hayley and I stole away for an instant beneath them. It was still night, and gentle winds sounded through the trees as I inhaled and allowed my body to feel calm.

Turning to Hayley, I said with thanks, "And thank you for being by my side.

Or "OMG, you guys, I shudder to imagine my life without YOU.

She grinned, the moon glinting off of her gorgeous eyes. We're partners in this, Aiden. No matter what."

At that instance, I realized the strength of our connection, which we had time and again undergone every struggle just to keep it alive. The moment she came into my arms, everything became a blur-the heat of her body and a life full of us up ahead.

Only that night was bittersweet with what sounded like the unknown ahead. As we stood under a sky of stars, I knew our wayfaring would continue endlessly. Our victory was overshadowed by the finding of a traitor among us-an announcement that what lay ahead would be no smooth sailing.

But with Hayley on my arm, I could face anything. Our love shined as a light through the darkness, illuminating our way forward.

I gazed up at the twinkling stars, and a vow forged in my heart to protect our pack, to find out what was going on, and to stand beside Hayley all along. And together, we would meet the challenges of tomorrow head-on... close and unbroken-hearted.
