Chapter 148
Chapter 148
They walked out into the courtyard. A large tent had been set up. Inside, wolves from different packs were waiting.
Laura took a deep breath. This was it. Her first real act as Queen.
She walked into the tent. Every conversation stopped. Every eye turned to her.
"My wolves," she said. "My people."
The words felt strange. But also right.
"We won," she said. "We fought together. We bled together. We survived together."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd.
"But winning the battle isn't the same as winning the war," Laura continued. "The real war is what comes next. Building something better. Something that will last."
She looked around the tent. At warriors and healers. At young wolves and old ones. At people who had been enemies just weeks ago.
"I know you didn't choose me," she said. "I know some of you don't trust me. That's okay. Trust is earned. And I intend to earn yours."
More murmurs. But these sounded more positive.
"We're going to create new laws," Laura said. "Fair laws. Laws that protect everyone. Not just the strong."
"What about the old ways?" someone called out.
Laura smiled. "The old ways got us into this mess. It's time for new ways."
She spent the next hour outlining her plans. The council. The trade agreements. The justice system.
Some wolves looked skeptical. Others seemed excited. Most just looked tired.
"Changes will take time," Laura said. "But they will happen. And they will be good for all of us."
"When do we start?" asked a young warrior.
"Now," Laura said. "We start now."
The meeting broke up. Wolves scattered to their tasks. Laura felt exhausted but satisfied.
"That went well," Dante said.
"Better than expected," Lucian agreed.
"They're willing to try," Laura said. "That's all I can ask for."
"Speaking of trying," Zephyr said. "I need to find Selena. She can't have just disappeared."
Laura looked at him. Really looked. He was trying to hide it, but she could see the worry and the fear.
"She means a lot to you," Laura said.
"She's my oldest friend," Zephyr said. "We grew up together. Before the curse. Before everything went wrong."
"Then find her," Laura said. "Take whoever you need. Search everywhere."
"Thank you," Zephyr said.
He left quickly. Laura watched him go. She hoped he found what he was looking for.
"We should rest," Lucian said. "It's been a long day."
"A long week," Dante corrected.
"A long year," Nikolai added.
Laura laughed. "True. But we made it."
They found a quiet corner of the camp. Someone had set up sleeping bags. Basic but comfortable.
Laura lay down between her mates. For the first time in days, she felt safe.
"Laura," Dante said softly.
"Yeah?"
"I'm proud of you."
"We all are," Lucian said.
"You're going to be a great Queen," Nikolai added.
Laura smiled in the darkness. "We're going to be great together."
She closed her eyes. But sleep didn't come easily. Too much to think about. Too much to plan.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges. New problems to solve. New people to lead.
But tonight, she was surrounded by love. By loyalty. By the unbreakable bonds that had saved them all.
She could face anything with them beside her.
The next morning came too soon. Laura woke to the sound of voices. Organized chaos as the camp prepared for the day ahead.
"My Queen," a voice called. "We need you."
Laura sat up. Rubbed her eyes. Her mates were already awake. Already dressed.
"What is it?" she asked.
"The families," Lucian said gently. "The families of the dead. They're here."
Laura's stomach dropped. This was the part she'd been dreading.
She got dressed quickly. Walked out to meet them. Fifty-three families. Fifty-three sets of grieving parents, mates, children.
"My Queen," an older woman said. She was crying. "My son. He was only nineteen."
Laura's heart broke. She walked to the woman and took her hands.
"I'm sorry," Laura said. "I'm so sorry for your loss."
"Was it worth it?" the woman asked. "Did he die for something that mattered?"
Laura looked into the woman's eyes. Saw the pain there. The desperate need for meaning.
"Yes," Laura said. "He died protecting the future. Protecting all of us."
"Will you remember him?" the woman asked.
"I'll remember all of them," Laura promised. "Their names will be carved in stone. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten."
The woman nodded. Squeezed Laura's hands. "Thank you."
Laura spoke to each family. Listened to their stories. Learned about the people who had died.
By the time she was done, her heart felt raw. But it was important. These people deserved to be seen and to be heard.
"We need a memorial," she told her mates afterward. "Something permanent and beautiful."
"Already working on it," Zephyr said. He had returned from his search. But his face was grim.
"Did you find her?" Laura asked.
"No," he said. "It's like she vanished. No one saw her leave. No one knows where she went."
Laura frowned. That was strange. And concerning.
"We'll keep looking," she said. "Someone must have seen something."
"Maybe she didn't want to be found," Nikolai said gently.
Zephyr's jaw tightened. "She wouldn't just leave. Not without saying goodbye."
Laura hoped he was right. But she had a bad feeling about this.
"Let's focus on what we can control," she said. "The memorial. The new laws and everything else."
"About that," Lucian said. "The other pack leaders want to make it official. A ceremony. Something public."
Laura's stomach fluttered. "A coronation?"
"You've been Queen in everything but name," Dante said. "It's time to make it official."
"When?" Laura asked.
"Three days," Lucian said. "That gives us time to prepare. To invite the other territories. To make it something special."
Laura nodded. It made sense. The packs needed symbols. Rituals and something to unite behind.
"Okay," she said. "Let's do it."
The next three days passed in a blur. Preparations for the coronation consumed everyone's time.
Laura tried on dress after dress. None of them felt right. Too fancy. Too formal. Too much like playing dress-up.
"What about this one?" asked Ember, the young healer who had become her unofficial stylist.
It was simpler than the others. White fabric that flowed like water. Silver embroidery that matched her tattoos.
"It's perfect," Laura said.
Ember smiled. "You'll look like a true Queen."
"I hope I'll act like one too," Laura said.
"You already do," Ember said. "You just don't see it yet."
Laura looked at herself in the mirror. The dress was beautiful. But it was still just a dress. It didn't make her feel any more ready for what was coming.
"What if I mess up?" she asked.
"Then you'll figure it out," Ember said. "That's what good leaders do."
Laura smiled. "You're very wise for someone so young."
"I learned from the best," Ember said. "My Queen."
The title still felt strange. But Laura was getting used to it, slowly.
The day of the coronation dawned clear and bright. Perfect weather for a new beginning.
Laura woke early. Her mates were already up, getting ready.
"How are you feeling?" Lucian asked.
"Terrified," Laura admitted.
"Good," Dante said. "If you weren't scared, I'd be worried."
"Fear keeps us sharp," Zephyr added. "It reminds us what's important."
"What's important?" Laura asked.
"The people," Nikolai said. "Always the people."
Laura nodded. He was right. This wasn't about her. It was about them. About building something better.
"Are you ready?" Lucian asked.
Laura looked at her mates. These four incredible men who had stood by her through everything. Who had given up their own power to help her claim hers.
"With you four beside me?" she said. "I'm ready for anything."
They smiled. She could feel their love through the bonds. Their absolute faith in her.
"Let's go make history," Dante said.
Laura took a deep breath. Squared her shoulders. Walked toward the door.
Toward her future. Toward her destiny.
Toward the moment she would truly become Queen.
