Chapter 149

The ceremonial ground was packed to the brim. Wolves from every territory stood shoulder to shoulder. Laura had never seen so many people in one place.

Her hands shook as she looked out at the crowd. Thousands of faces stared back at her. All waiting for her and watching solemnly.

"Breathe," Lucian whispered beside her. "Just breathe."

Laura tried. But the air felt thick and heavy. Like it was pressing down on her chest.

"I can't do this," she said quietly. "There are too many people."

"Yes, you can," Dante said. His voice was steady and calm. "You've done harder things."

Laura looked at him. Then at her other mates. They stood in a line beside her. All dressed in formal clothes. All looking like the leaders they were about to become.

"Together," Zephyr said softly. "We do this together."

Laura nodded. Took a deep breath and shakily stepped forward.

The crowd went silent. You could hear a pin drop.

Elder Thea stood at the center of the platform. She was ancient. Older than anyone could remember. Her white hair flowed down her back like water.

"Today we witness history," the Elder said. Her voice carried across the crowd. "Today we crown our first Alpha Queen in three hundred years."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Excitement. Nervousness and hope.

"Laura Ravenwood," Elder Thea called. "Step forward."

Laura's legs felt like jelly. But she walked forward. Each step echoed in the silence.

"Do you swear to protect all wolves?" Elder Thea asked. "The strong and the weak. The Alpha and the Omega?"

"I swear," Laura said. Her voice was stronger than she felt.

"Do you swear to lead with wisdom? To judge with fairness? To rule with mercy?"

"I swear."

"Do you swear to give your life for your people? To put their needs above your own?"

Laura thought of the families she'd met. The mothers who had lost their sons. The children who had lost their fathers.

"I swear," she said. And meant it.

Elder Thea smiled. "Then let your mates come forward. Let them take their oaths."

Lucian stepped up first. His back was straight. His eyes were proud.

"Lucian Blackwood," Elder Thea said. "You are named Commander of the Blood Legions. Will you serve your Queen with honor?"

"I will," Lucian said. His voice was deep. Strong. "I pledge my sword. My strength and my life."

He knelt and placed his hand over his heart. The crowd watched in silence.

"Rise, Commander," Elder Thea said. "And take your place."

Dante came next. He was grinning. Like this was the best day of his life.

"Dante Stormborn," Elder Thea said. "You are named Warden of the Wildlands. Will you guard our borders? Protect our people?"

"I will," Dante said. His eyes sparked with fire. "I pledge my fury. My courage and my blood."

He knelt like Lucian had. But when he stood, he winked at Laura. She almost smiled.

Zephyr stepped forward. His face was serious and thoughtful.

"Zephyr Duskbane," Elder Thea said. "You are named Seer of Shadows and Strategy. Will you guide us with wisdom? Counsel us with truth?"

"I will," Zephyr said. His voice was quiet but firm. "I pledge my mind. My sight and my service."

He knelt. Rose and took his place beside the others.

Finally, Nikolai stepped forward. His face was calm. But Laura could see the emotion in his eyes.

"Nikolai Vale," Elder Thea said. "You are named Voice of the Lost, Keeper of Secrets. Will you speak for those who cannot speak? Guard what must be hidden?"

"I will," Nikolai said. His voice was soft. Sad. "I pledge my voice. My secrets and my soul."

He knelt. But when he stood, he looked directly at Laura. And all she saw was pure love.

"Now," Elder Thea said. "Let the packs pledge their loyalty."

One by one, representatives came forward. From every territory. Every pack and every group of wolves.

"We pledge our loyalty to Queen Laura," they said. "We swear to follow. To serve and to protect."

The words echoed across the crowd. Hundreds of voices speaking as one.

Laura felt tears in her eyes. These people were choosing her. Trusting her and believing in her.

"My Queen," Elder Thea said. "Do you accept their loyalty?"

"I do," Laura said. "And I pledge to earn it. Every day. For as long as I live."

The Elder smiled. She reached for something on the altar. A crown. Simple but beautiful. Silver metal twisted into the shape of thorns and roses.

"This crown was worn by the last Alpha Queen," Elder Thea said. "Queen Lyraie the Just. She ruled three hundred years ago. Before the great war and the division."

Laura stared at the crown. It looked heavy. Not just in weight but in responsibility.

"Are you ready?" Elder Thea asked.

Laura looked at her mates. They were all watching her. All believing in her.

She looked at the crowd. At the faces of people who had fought for her. Who had died for her. Who were counting on her.

"I'm ready," she said.

Elder Thea lifted the crown. The silver caught the sunlight. It gleamed like starlight.

"By the power of the Moon Goddess," Elder Thea said. "By the will of the people. By the strength of the bonds that unite us..."

She placed the crown on Laura's head.

It was heavy. Heavier than she'd expected. But it fit perfectly almost like it was made for her.

"I crown you Laura Ravenwood," Elder Thea said. "First of her name. Alpha Queen of all wolves. Protector of the weak. Guardian of the strong. Mother of the packs."

The crowd erupted. Cheers. Howls and applause that went on forever.

Laura stood there. Crown on her head. Mates beside her. People cheering below.

She was Queen now. Really and truly Queen.

The responsibility was terrifying. But for the first time, she felt ready for it.

She had her mates. She had her people. She had the strength that came from bonds forged in battle.

She could do this.

She would do this.

For all of them.
