Chapter 76: The Gathering Eclipse
The moonlight pierced through Alex’s eyelids.
Sharp. Cold.
He groaned and shifted.
The ground beneath him was damp and familiar.
The grove.
His body ached with a deep, bone-deep exhaustion.
His wolf stirred weakly inside him.
The scar on his palm...
Gone.
In its place was a crescent moon etched into his skin.
A mark of something new.
Something permanent.
The bond no longer pulsed with intermittent warmth or pain.
It flowed.
Constant.
Unyielding.
He didn’t just feel the moon’s presence.
He was tethered to it.
A living conduit between the lunar core and the earth.
His wolf growled softly.
The power was overwhelming.
Ancient. Vast.
And behind it...
Something darker waited.
Nyx.
Watching.
Waiting.
Alex forced himself to sit up.
The silver oak’s bark glimmered faintly beside him.
The Eclipse Stone pulsed softly within the trunk.
The bond was holding.
But the war was far from over.
Cain noticed him first.
The warrior stood near the edge of the grove, axe across his shoulders.
He turned sharply when Alex shifted.
"Alpha’s awake!" Cain barked.
Maya and the Elder appeared almost instantly.
Maya knelt beside Alex.
"About time," she said with a shaky smile.
"How long was I out?"
"Three days," Cain said.
Alex's eyes widened.
The Elder crouched beside him, gaze sharp and analytical.
"Your body went into hibernation after the ritual," the Elder explained.
"You were integrating the lunar bond."
Alex rubbed his palm.
The crescent moon mark shimmered faintly.
"It worked," Alex said.
The Elder gave a tired nod.
"Yes. The Lunar Aegis is active."
He gestured toward the oak.
"The stone stabilized the bond. The moon’s tether is secure... for now."
Maya exhaled softly.
"So we won?"
The Elder hesitated.
"Not yet."
Alex’s heart tightened.
The scar had vanished.
The moon was connected again.
But the shadows hadn’t retreated.
The moon still felt… tense.
"What aren’t you saying?" Alex asked.
The Elder’s eyes shifted toward the sky.
"Look for yourself."
Alex followed his gaze.
The moon hovered high above the grove.
Its surface was pale and bright…
But along the left edge, a faint shadow crept inward.
Unnatural darkness.
The beginning of an eclipse.
Maya swore softly.
"That wasn’t there last night," she said.
The Elder’s grip on his staff tightened.
"It wasn't."
Alex’s pulse quickened.
"Nyx is still pushing," he said.
The Elder nodded grimly.
"And it's getting stronger."
The pack returned to the den.
The tension in the air was palpable.
The younger wolves sensed the shift.
The moon no longer provided its usual comforting pull.
The energy was strained.
Fractured.
Alex spread the map across the table.
Maya hovered beside him.
Cain paced near the window.
The Elder placed a stone disk in the map’s center.
The Lunar Compass.
The device resonated with the moon’s energy.
The Elder whispered an incantation.
The disk glowed softly.
Lines of silver light stretched outward across the map.
One beam pulsed erratically toward the northern mountains.
The Elder’s eyes narrowed.
"There."
Cain leaned closer.
"North Ridge Summit? There's nothing there."
The Elder tapped the glowing line.
"That’s where the energy distortion originates."
Alex’s gut twisted.
His wolf’s instincts flared.
Nyx was focusing its power there.
The Elder confirmed his thoughts.
"Nyx isn’t attacking the stone directly," the Elder said.
"It’s trying to corrupt the moon itself by anchoring its influence to that location."
Maya frowned.
"How?"
The Elder sighed.
"Nyx can’t break the bond with the Lunar Aegis in place."
He pointed to the glowing line.
"But it’s creating an Eclipse Nexus a convergence of shadow energy."
"If the nexus solidifies during the eclipse," Alex said slowly, "Nyx can bypass the bond and seize control of the moon’s energy."
The Elder nodded.
"Exactly."
Cain growled low.
"So we stop it."
Maya glanced at the Elder.
"How much time do we have?"
The Elder’s face was grim.
"The eclipse reaches its apex in two nights."
Alex stood abruptly.
"Then we leave now."
The pack moved out before dawn.
The forest thinned as they climbed into the foothills.
The moon followed overhead.
The shadow on its surface had grown.
A thin, violet-tinged arc now covered nearly a quarter of its face.
The wolf in Alex snarled at the sight.
The moonlight that reached them was thinner.
Colder.
The Lunar Aegis held…
But it strained beneath Nyx’s growing influence.
The pack ran through the mountain trails in silence.
Their breaths fogged the freezing air.
The shadows along the path shifted unnaturally.
Maya caught it first.
"Shadows, three o’clock," she whispered.
Cain slowed, axe raised.
Alex extended his senses.
The scar was gone, but the crescent moon on his palm tingled faintly.
The shadows rippled across the snow.
They coiled unnaturally, flowing against the wind.
The wolf in Alex growled.
"They're not here for us," he said softly.
The Elder’s eyes narrowed.
"Then what"
The shadows surged toward the grove’s direction.
Alex’s heart stopped.
"They're going after the tree," he realized.
Maya cursed.
Cain’s knuckles whitened around his weapon.
"Nyx is distracting us while it hits the grove," Alex said.
He turned to Maya and Cain.
"Get back to the city. Protect the grove."
Cain hesitated.
"What about you?"
"I go north," Alex said.
Maya’s jaw clenched.
"You can’t face Nyx alone."
"I won’t be alone," Alex said.
He gestured toward the Elder.
"And if we don’t stop the nexus, the grove won't survive anyway."
Cain grunted.
"Split the pack, double the risk."
"Triple the reward," Alex countered.
Cain clasped his forearm.
"Don't die."
"No promises."
Cain and Maya sprinted back toward the city.
Alex turned north.
The Elder followed silently.
The moon's shadow thickened overhead.
The mountain summit loomed after hours of relentless climbing.
The air thinned.
The wind howled through the crags.
The crescent mark on Alex’s palm burned like ice.
The Elder paused near the ridge.
"Do you feel it?" the Elder asked.
Alex gritted his teeth.
"Yeah. It’s close."
They crested the final ridge.
The summit spread out before them.
At its center, a circle of obsidian stone pulsed with dark energy.
Runes carved into the rocks glimmered with faint violet light.
The Nexus.
The Elder’s eyes filled with dread.
"It’s more advanced than I feared," the Elder whispered.
Lines of shadow energy stretched upward from the circle.
They coiled toward the moon like black tendrils.
The lunar energy above flickered erratically.
Nyx was siphoning the moon’s strength.
And the Eclipse Stone’s power was straining to hold the connection.
Alex stepped toward the nexus.
The mark on his palm burned hotter with each step.
The shadowy tendrils thickened in response.
The ground vibrated beneath his feet.
Nyx felt him.
And it wasn’t pleasant.
The shadows coiled and condensed in front of the nexus.
A figure rose from the swirling mist.
Tall. Angular.
Violet eyes glowing with cold amusement.
The Harbinger.
Its mouth twisted into a smile.
The Alpha of the Moon returns.
Alex’s wolf growled.
"You talk too much," Alex said flatly.
The Harbinger’s gaze flicked toward the Elder.
You think you can stop what’s already begun?
Alex raised his claws.
"We’re going to try."
The Harbinger chuckled softly.
You misunderstand, Alpha.
The shadows thickened around the nexus.
The ground cracked beneath the black circle.
The tendrils of shadow writhed upward toward the moon.
The crescent mark on Alex’s palm burned like molten ice.
Nyx was here.
Now.
The Harbinger raised its arms.
The tendrils of shadow shot toward Alex and the Elder.
Alex lunged forward, claws igniting with silver energy.
The Elder slammed his staff into the ground.
Moonlight flared from the core of the nexus.
The shadows recoiled momentarily.
The Harbinger’s smile didn’t waver.
You are too late, Alpha, it said softly.
The moon above them dimmed further.
The eclipse advanced another inch.
The lunar bond strained audibly, crackling through the cold air.
The Nexus was winning.
Alex's wolf howled in fury.
The moon was slipping away.
And if it fell into Nyx’s grasp...
The eternal eclipse would begin.
