Chapter 72: The Calm Before the Storm
The grove stood quiet.
The silver oak shimmered faintly under the moonlight.
Its branches swayed gently in the wind.
But the energy beneath Alex’s palm felt... different.
Muted. Strained.
The First Shadow was gone.
The bond between the moon and the pack had been restored.
But the scar on his palm still throbbed faintly.
His wolf paced restlessly inside him.
The battle was over.
But the war wasn’t done.
Not yet.
Cain approached from behind.
"Still out here?"
Alex didn’t look away from the tree.
"Couldn’t sleep."
Cain grunted.
"Yeah. Me neither."
The wind shifted.
The oak’s leaves rustled softly.
Kara's scent had disappeared.
Her essence had merged fully with the grove.
She was now its eternal guardian.
But the absence of her presence felt like a missing limb.
Cain leaned against the tree.
"You think it's really over?"
Alex exhaled slowly.
"No."
Cain's jaw tightened.
"Yeah... me neither."
The moon’s light grew sharper in the following nights.
Brighter.
But colder.
The pack felt it during patrols.
Their senses were sharper.
Their strength was stronger.
But the warmth of the moon’s presence had dimmed.
Maya noticed it first during a border sweep.
She froze mid-step.
Her nostrils flared.
"Cain," she whispered.
Cain turned, eyes flashing gold.
"What is it?"
Maya scanned the dark alleyway.
The shadows rippled unnaturally.
The moonlight above flickered like a damaged streetlamp.
The scar on Alex’s palm burned.
The pack stood in formation.
The shadows stilled.
The moon’s glow steadied.
The disturbance was gone.
But the unease remained.
The Elder met Alex at the grove the next morning.
The old wolf knelt beside the roots, his brow furrowed.
Alex crossed his arms.
"You feel it too."
The Elder nodded.
"The balance is... fragile."
"Is the Devourer trying to return?"
The Elder shook his head.
"No. Umbra Primis is gone. But something else... stirred when we sealed the fracture."
Alex’s scar tingled.
He opened his palm.
The thin silver line pulsed faintly.
"What kind of 'something'?"
The Elder traced the bark with a fingertip.
The roots trembled beneath his touch.
"The moon is shifting," the Elder said softly.
"It feels... restless."
Alex’s jaw clenched.
"The moon doesn’t get restless."
"It does now," the Elder said.
He stood slowly.
"Whatever we awakened beneath the shadows... it's not done with us."
The wind stirred the leaves overhead.
The silver oak shuddered.
The scar on Alex’s palm flared again.
The wolf inside him growled low.
And in the distance, far beyond the city’s skyline…
The moon’s glow pulsed unnaturally.
The pack gathered at the den’s rooftop later that night.
The moon was high.
Its glow is sharp and intense.
Brighter than Alex had ever seen it.
The scar on his palm throbbed with each pulse of light.
Cain stared upward, squinting.
"That’s... not normal, right?"
Maya shook her head.
"No."
The Elder arrived last, staff clutched tightly.
He didn't look at the moon.
He looked at Alex.
"Your scar is the key," the Elder said.
Alex frowned.
"It was supposed to be a tether. Not a key."
The Elder’s voice turned grim.
"The moon doesn't make mistakes."
Alex’s wolf stirred anxiously.
"So... if it gave me this scar for a reason?"
The Elder’s grip tightened on his staff.
"Then the moon is preparing you for what’s coming."
Cain exhaled sharply.
"Okay, hold up. What exactly is coming?"
The Elder’s gaze shifted to the horizon.
"Something older than Umbra Primis," the Elder said softly.
"And more dangerous."
Maya’s eyes widened.
"Older than the First Shadow?"
The Elder’s voice dropped to a whisper.
"The Eternal Eclipse."
The Elder unrolled an ancient scroll on the table inside the den.
The parchment crackled under his fingers.
The pack crowded around it.
Symbols of the moon lined the edges.
At the center was a black circle surrounded by jagged lines.
Alex’s wolf recoiled at the sight of it.
Cain pointed to the symbol.
"That... doesn’t look friendly."
"It isn’t," the Elder said.
"This is the Eclipse Sigil. It represents the moon’s greatest fear: complete severance from the earth."
He tapped the center.
"Long ago, before packs roamed the earth, the moon was bound to the planet’s energy. But legends speak of an ancient force that tried to consume that connection."
Maya’s eyes darkened.
"Umbra Primis?"
The Elder shook his head.
"No. Umbra Primis was only a servant of that force."
Alex’s scar pulsed hard.
"And this force?"
The Elder hesitated.
"It was called Nyx Aeternum the Eternal Night."
Cain muttered a curse.
"What the hell does it want?"
The Elder looked at Alex.
"To devour the moonlight. To shatter the bond completely. And plunge the world into endless darkness."
Alex’s jaw clenched.
"And my scar?"
"It makes you the moon’s tether," the Elder said.
"And if Nyx Aeternum takes you…"
The Elder didn’t finish the sentence.
Maya did.
"It gets what it wants."
The next night, Alex patrolled the eastern district alone.
The moonlight was sharp enough to cast harsh, jagged shadows across the streets.
His wolf paced anxiously beneath his skin.
The scar burned without pause now.
The moon felt wrong.
Like a heartbeat out of rhythm.
He paused on a rooftop overlooking the industrial zone.
The scar flared suddenly.
The wolf howled in his mind.
The air shifted.
The shadows near the base of a rusted water tower thickened unnaturally.
Alex dropped into a crouch.
The shadows coiled upward into a humanlike figure.
Thin. Angular.
Its eyes glowed faintly violet.
Not the crimson of Umbra Primis.
Something else.
Something worse.
Alex’s wolf growled.
The figure turned toward him.
Its mouth curved into a smile.
The Alpha of the Moon, the figure said.
Its voice was layered male, female, and something inhuman.
Alex tensed.
"Who are you?"
The figure tilted its head.
A messenger.
"For who?"
The figure's eyes brightened.
Nyx watches. Nyx waits.
The scar on Alex’s palm burned like a brand.
His knees buckled.
The figure extended a hand.
The moon above flickered.
The shadows thickened.
Alex's vision blurred.
The voice slithered through his mind.
The moon has forgotten its place. The eclipse is coming.
The figure’s arm stretched unnaturally toward him.
Alex forced his wolf to respond.
He lunged forward, swiping with his claws.
The figure dissolved into mist.
The shadows melted into the pavement.
The moonlight returned to normal.
Alex fell to one knee.
His heart raced.
His scar pulsed.
The words echoed in his mind.
Nyx watches. Nyx waits.
He looked at the moon.
The glow shimmered faintly.
Like something vast and ancient stirred behind it.
The Eternal Eclipse wasn't just a prophecy.
It had begun.
Alex returned to the den.
The Elder met him at the entrance.
"You felt it," the Elder said.
"More than that," Alex said grimly.
"I saw it."
The Elder’s eyes narrowed.
"Nyx?"
Alex nodded.
Cain and Maya arrived moments later.
Alex gestured toward the map.
"The moon’s tether isn’t just weak," Alex said.
"It’s being hunted."
Maya stiffened.
"By who?"
Alex’s scar burned as he answered.
"By Nyx Aeternum."
Cain growled softly.
"Well, screw that thing. How do we fight it?"
The Elder opened a second scroll.
A different sigil appeared.
Two crescent moons facing each other.
"The only known defense against Nyx is the Lunar Aegis the moon's shield," the Elder said.
"But it requires three elements: the Alpha’s scar, the Guardian’s essence, and the Eclipse Stone."
Maya’s brows furrowed.
"We have the scar. We have Kara’s essence in the grove. Where’s the stone?"
The Elder’s eyes turned grim.
"Buried in the Lunar Catacombs... beyond the city’s borders."
Alex straightened.
"Then we go get it."
The Elder hesitated.
"Nyx will try to stop us."
Alex's wolf growled low.
"Let it try."
Cain’s grin was sharp.
"Road trip to the catacombs? I’m in."
Maya cracked her knuckles.
"Let’s finish this."
Alex traced the scar on his palm.
The moon above flickered faintly.
Nyx was watching.
Waiting.
The moon was vulnerable.
And if they failed…
The eternal night would consume them all.
