The Cost of Vengeance
The Cost of Vengeance
The grand ballroom was eerily silent, save for the crackle of fire licking the edges of the ruined lair. Smoke curled toward the ceiling, wrapping around the chandeliers like ghostly hands. The air was thick with the stench of blood and burnt flesh.
And at the center of it all— Maximus.
He stood at the top of the grand staircase, surveying the chaos with the measured gaze of a puppeteer watching his marionettes struggle against their strings.
Slowly, deliberately, he spread his arms wide.
"Welcome," he drawled, voice carrying over the death-laden air. "What a sight you all make—betrayers, saviors, broken fools caught in a war you barely understand."
His gaze flickered over each of them, lingering. Calculating.
Amara. His once-lover turned traitor, the woman who had dared to challenge him.
Ash.The strategist, the fool who had believed distraction could undo dominance. He was bruised, bloodied, and ultimately disposable.
Tessa and Jax. The unknown variables.
"Now, here’s the real mystery."
Maximus descended the staircase, slow and deliberate, eyes shifting between them.
"Ash knows Amara. Amara knows me. But you two—" He gestured lazily toward Tessa and Jax. "Where do you fit into this mess?"
Jax tensed, instinctively placing himself between Maximus and Tessa.
Maximus chuckled, dark amusement flickering in his expression. "Ah… a protector. How noble. How fragile."
Then, with a snap of his fingers, the iron doors groaned open.
From the shadows, Wyatt emerged, trembling, feral, crimson eyes burning with hunger.
A broken creation, driven by instinct alone.
Tessa stiffened. Jax adjusted his stance.
But it was Ash whose reaction was the most telling.
For just a fraction of a second, his breath hitched—his shoulders tensing, his eyes flickering toward Tessa with something dangerously close to concern.
And Maximus saw it.
"Ah…" His smirk widened slightly.
A revelation. A confirmation.
"So that's how it is."
Then— the growl.
Low. Unstable. Ravenous.
Wyatt’s body jerked, his breath hitching, his muscles twitching as something inside him fractured.
Whatever remained of self-control—whatever flicker of recognition he’d had— was gone.
His head snapped toward Tessa.
And then, he lunged.
Tessa barely had time to react before Wyatt lunged—feral, uncontrollable. His eyes burned red, fangs gleaming, body trembling from the sheer force of his instincts overtaking him.
She staggered backward, fear locking her muscles, but Wyatt hesitated.
For a split second, something familiar flickered in his gaze.
"Tessa…" His voice was ragged, fractured, human. "I’m… sorry."
Her breath hitched. Then, he surged forward again—faster, stronger, lost to his hunger.
Jax moved before she could, intercepting the attack, throwing himself between them. The impact sent both men crashing to the ground in a violent struggle.
Jax fought with everything he had, but Wyatt was stronger. Wilder.
Blood splattered across the stone floor.
Jax gritted his teeth, forcing Wyatt back—until the fatal strike came.
A clawed hand pierced his chest.
Tessa screamed.
Jax's body convulsed, his strength failing. Wyatt reeled, horror flashing in his crimson eyes as he realized what he had done.
The monster had taken over.
It had stolen his will.
The regret was clear on his face, but it didn’t matter.
The stake was already in Tessa’s hands.
With one final, swift motion, she drove it into Wyatt’s heart.
Silence swallowed the space around her.
Both bodies collapsed.
Jax was gone. Wyatt was gone.
Tessa trembled, her hands stained with blood, grief threatening to crush her.
But there was no time to mourn.
Tessa wanted to. Needed to. But the chaos wouldn’t let her.
Then— from above, a shot rang out.
Maximus barely had time to react before holy water burst against his shoulder, sizzling into his flesh.
The impact sent him stumbling back, his sneer twisting into something darker.
Lucas stood on the upper balcony, rifle leveled, eyes burning with fury.
He had seen it all. Jax’s murder. Wyatt’s failure. Tessa’s grief.
And now, rage drove him forward.
Another shot.
Maximus dodged, the holy water pellet striking the floor, burning a scar into the stone.
Lucas moved fast. No hesitation. No mercy.
The hunters were dead. Jax was dead.
But Maximus? Maximus was still breathing.
Lucas wouldn’t allow that.
He leapt over the railing, landing hard before charging forward.
Tessa barely registered the movement— she was frozen, staring at Jax’s lifeless eyes.
She should run. She knew she should run.
But her body refused to leave him behind.
Lucas kept moving.
"Come out, Maximus!" he bellowed. "Enough of your little games! Fight like a damn man!"
A heartbeat of silence.
Then— a slow clap.
From the darkness, Maximus stepped forward, his smirk razor-sharp. But he wasn’t alone.
A silver dagger gleamed against Amara’s throat.
She didn’t struggle. She just stared.
Silent. Pleading. Begging Lucas to leave.
Lucas’s grip tightened on his rifle. His breath came hard.
Ash couldn’t move.
Couldn’t think.
Couldn’t breathe.
Tessa saw it—the way his entire body locked, the horror spilling into his expression.
And just like that— the game changed again.
Lucas’s breath came hard. His rifle stayed steady.
Leave Amara out of this," he demanded, voice raw with fury. This isn’t her fight."
Maximus smiled.
"Oh, but it is," he mused, adjusting his grip on Amara. "You just don’t see it yet.
Tessa and Lucas watched, bodies taut, ready to move.
Above, the snipers remained still, waiting for an opening.
Maximus knew he was trapped.
Most of his henchmen here dead.
His forces were gone.
No one remained to fight for him.
And yet— he still had Amara.
She trembled against him, his blade pressing into her throat.
Ash stood up, voice steady despite the weight in his eyes.
"Let her go, Maximus," Ash said firmly. "She’s innocent in this. She’s not part of your twisted game."
Amara turned her gaze to Ash—her old friend, ever the benefactor, his kindness unwavering even in the face of death.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
She knew the truth. Maximus wouldn’t hesitate.
Lucas saw his chance.
He moved slowly, deliberately, creeping closer.
Ash caught onto the plan— kept talking, stringing Maximus along, buying Lucas time.
Then— in a blur of motion, Lucas pulled Amara from Maximus’s grasp.
And in the shuffle, Maximus struck.
The blade sank into her stomach.
Her grunt of pain shattered the moment.
She stared at Maximus, disbelief flickering in her eyes.
Maximus’s gaze dropped to his hand— covered in her blood.
Shock flickered across his face.
Then—Lucas lunged.
Ash ran to Amara’s side.
Tessa moved, helping him pull her away, their hands stained with her blood.
She stared at the wound, the deep gash, the way the blood oozed too fast.
"She needs to feed," Tessa urged, voice breaking. "She won’t heal fast enough otherwise."
Ash hesitated—he knew what that meant.
"Take her out of the lair,"Tessa pressed. "Get her away. I can’t I can’t lose another person.
Ash nodded, lifting Amara.
Tessa turned.
Lucas was losing.
Maximus wasn’t done.
Lucas managed to shove him off— stumbled back—but then Tessa saw it.
The metal gleaming in Maximus’s hand.
She ran.
"Lucas!" she screamed.
She lunged, wrapping her arms around him.
They spun.
They fell.
Silence.
Tessa lifted her head.
Lucas was staring at her— his dimpled smile still there.
She smiled back—relieved—until she saw the blood trickling from his mouth.
No. No. No.
"Please, Lucas," she pleaded. "Please—"
She slid out from under him, his warmth turning to blood against her skin.
Tears filled her eyes.
She rolled him over— the wound in his side was deep, ugly, fatal.
"Please don’t die. You can’t die."
Then—her name was yelled.
She grabbed the stake.
She turned.
And she plunged it into Maximus’s heart.
"Die, you bastard."
She shoved the stake deeper, watching him twist, watching the pixels unravel.
He opened his mouth—but nothing came out.
And then, nothing
Maximus was gone.
The stake clattered to the ground, the only thing left of him.
