Shattered Illusions

Shattered Illusions
Tessa and Jax stood frozen, the chill settling deep in their bones. Neither dared move. Neither knew if Maximus would end their lives right here, in this moment.

From the next cell, Wyatt thrashed violently—his humanity barely clinging to the surface. His eyes glowed red, fangs extended, saliva pooling in the corners of his mouth as he stared at them with primal hunger.

Tessa turned toward him, her heart hammering. She could see the war raging inside Wyatt, his fight against the inevitable.
Jax instinctively placed himself in front of her. He was no match for these creatures, but he would fight if it came to that.

Maximus snapped his fingers. Two guards materialized from the shadows, seizing both Tessa and Jax. Without a word, they dragged them up the stairs.

The sight awaiting them was worse than any nightmare.
Bodies lay scattered, lifeless and broken. The stench of charred flesh and burning ash clung to the air, thick and suffocating.

Tessa gripped Jax’s arm, her stomach twisting. She wanted to look away, to block out the horror, but the war zone before her was inescapable.

Unbidden tears blurred her vision. She refused to think about Ash or Amara. She couldn't comprehend how everything had fallen apart so quickly.

Beside her, Jax scanned the destruction, searching for someone. His jaw tightened, frustration and fury burning in his eyes.

Then, she saw him.
Ash.

He was barely recognizable—his clothes torn, blood smeared across his skin. His face was swollen, shadows of bruises lining his jaw and cheekbones. He was kneeling, head bowed, his body trembling from exhaustion and pain.

Tessa’s breath hitched. Her heart ached at the sight of him, but nothing made sense. Why was this happening? Why was there so much death—so much destruction?

She turned sharply toward Maximus, but he wasn’t looking at her. He was watching Ash.

And enjoying every second of his suffering.
A sick feeling coiled in her stomach. Whatever this was—whatever had led to this carnage—she wasn’t meant to understand. Not yet.

Lucas positioned himself along the second level, keeping his team in formation.
Something was wrong. Very wrong.
Amara had let them in. The plan was simple—three teams, each assigned a different section of the lair. Their mission: eliminate the enemy, survive.

But now?

Now, vampires fled in terror. The screams. The fire. The carnage.

Hunters dropped one by one, their bodies crumbling into death before Lucas could process what was happening.

He tried the coms. No response.
His team held their ground in the shadows, tucked within alcoves overlooking the massacre below.

Then—

A sickening crack.

Lucas turned just in time to see Ash being beaten, silver chains carving deep into his flesh.

Lucas steadied his rifle, prepared to act—until Maximus entered the scene.

Lucas froze.

Maximus seized Ash by the hair, delivering a brutal final blow before dragging him toward the grand ballroom.

Everything had gone to hell.
Amara paced her bed chamber, oblivious to the chaos unfolding beyond her walls.

She was restless. Uneasy.

Then—

A scream.
Her heart stopped.

Her room was the furthest from the ballroom, but she could smell it now—the acrid scent of burning flesh and blood.
She opened her door just as vampires sprinted past in a frenzy, shouting about fire. Someone shattered a corridor window, several creatures leaping out into the night.

Amara shut her door.
She moved quickly, grabbing the small bag she kept for emergencies and slipping through the hidden exit.

As the door clicked shut behind her, she heard another—a heavier one.
Her bedroom door.

She knew who it was before she even turned.

Through the small crack in the panel, she watched as Maximus ransacked the room.

“Find her,” he said, his voice cold, commanding.

Amara held her breath, too afraid to blink.

Maximus lingered. He turned, pausing in front of the mirror where a small photograph was tucked in the corner—a memory, decades old.

Their younger selves, locked in an embrace.
Once lovers. Now enemies.

His expression darkened. He crumpled the picture and let it fall to the floor.
Then, he was gone.

Amara exhaled shakily. She needed to find the others. She needed to get out.
Ash sat motionless, watching Maximus with careful neutrality. The conversation had gone smoothly—his distraction had worked. Amara should have let the hunters in by now.

Then, without preamble—

The door swung open.

Two henchmen stormed in, fists already raised.

The first blow struck like a hammer, cracking across his jaw. His head snapped back.

Another landed against his ribs, knocking the air from his lungs.
Ash stumbled, vision blurring.

“What—?” he managed, but the next punch silenced him.

Pain exploded through him as boots and fists collided against his body, sending him reeling to the ground.
He tried to rise. Another blow forced him back down.

Maximus hadn’t moved. He merely watched. Expression unreadable.
“You think I wouldn’t notice?” Maximus murmured, voice deceptively calm.

Ash wheezed, trying to focus, to understand—

The plan. The distraction. Amara.

Had it all gone wrong?

Another kick to his ribs sent him fully into darkness.

Maximus stood in the dim glow of his chamber, swirling the blood-filled goblet in his hand. Everything was going according to plan.

Until it wasn’t.

A frantic knock echoed through the room.

He turned, displeasure flickering in his cold stare as the door swung open. One of his men stumbled inside, blood smeared across his face, breath ragged.

“My Lord… the hunters…” he gasped. “They’re inside.”

The goblet slipped from Maximus’s fingers, shattering against the stone floor.

Silence stretched thin.

His gaze sharpened. “What did you just say?”

The guard swallowed hard. “The lair… it’s been breached.”

Maximus’s face remained unreadable.

Then, with eerie calm, he stepped forward, gripping the man by the throat.

“Tell me how,” he whispered.

The guard trembled. “Amara let them in.”

Maximus didn’t react. Not immediately.

Then—

A slow smile curled at the edges of his lips.

Amara.

Of course.

His grip tightened, cutting off the guard’s breath.

“Find her,” he ordered, voice smooth, lethal. “And kill them all.”
