A Dance with Darkness

A Dance with Darkness
Lucas stepped into his private office, the weight of the past twenty-four hours pressing against his ribs like a vice. Maps, books, and scattered notes cluttered his desk—the blueprint of Falls Hollow spread before him, marked with locations Amara had provided. He traced a path with his finger, committing the plan to memory. Tessa was somewhere in that lair, and time was slipping away.

He exhaled sharply and pressed his palms against the desk, steadying himself. Death was a possibility. A reality. He knew enough about Maximus now to expect nothing less.

"Duvall," he called.

The man entered swiftly, poised and ready. Lucas wasted no time listing what they’d need: weapons, reinforcements, only the best hunters. He made one thing clear—this was a dangerous mission, and no one was obligated to come. If they feared for their lives, they needed to stay behind.

Duvall gave a firm nod and excused himself.

Lucas lingered in the quiet, staring after him. His body felt leaden, exhaustion creeping in as he pulled himself away from the office and into the bedroom—the same room that now carried the gentle reminder of new life.

Baby Jackson lay in the bassinet, wide awake, silent in his exploration of the world around him. Lucas lifted him with careful hands, deja vu settling deep in his bones. Cassie. He had done this with Cassie once. The ghost of that memory tightened around his throat—the weight of loss never fully leaving, only shifting, only adapting.

He moved to the window, looking out into the empty yard where the magnolia tree once stood. The memory cut deeper than he expected: Tessa curled beneath its branches, whispering apologies into the earth, grieving the absence of her daughter with a desperation Lucas could never forget.

The rustling behind him pulled him back. Camille stirred from sleep, her gaze finding his, warm and knowing. They spoke softly, Lucas careful to avoid the conversation they both knew needed to happen. When Jackson drifted into sleep again, Lucas laid beside her, finally allowing the truth to surface.

"Tessa’s been taken," he murmured. "I’m going after her."

The implication hung thick between them. Camille understood their world—danger lived in the shadows, waiting. She said nothing of it. Instead, she whispered a prayer, asking for them all to return.

Jax arrived home and reached immediately for the whiskey. The adrenaline still pulsed through him, too strong, too fast. He drank deep, the burn grounding him, forcing the chaos in his mind into something tangible.

Guilt gnawed at him. It had been weeks of self-reflection—months, really. His friendship with Lucas, his history with Tessa—he had failed them both.

He let the shower scald his skin, trying to wash away the weight of his choices. He had justified sleeping with his best friend’s wife once, telling himself that their marriage had already been shattered. But the truth was sharper than that. He had taken advantage of her grief, her vulnerability, and a better man wouldn’t have done it.

Tomorrow, he would help save her.

And when it was over, he owed them both an apology.

Tessa gasped as icy water struck her skin, jolting her awake. She coughed, sputtering, shivering as she pressed herself upright.

Maximus stood at the entrance to her cell, smiling—no, reveling in the sight of her like this.

She was thinner. Hair damp with sweat, skin clammy. But the fire in her eyes refused to dim. He liked that about her—the fight, the resistance. The game was always better when they struggled.

She straightened, hands clenched at her sides, jaw tight.

His smile widened.

He snapped his fingers, and without a word, the women entered, pulling her to her feet. They guided her through the halls, ignoring her questions, offering no reassurance.

Warm water filled the bath. She was stripped, cleaned, dressed. The emerald gown clung to her frame, delicate gold embroidery twisting over the fabric like vines. Her hair curled softly around her face, makeup light but intentional. The moment she caught her reflection, a cold dread set in.

The door opened.

Maximus stood before her, dressed in deep blue, striking against the sharp lines of his military coat.

"Tonight, we dance," he told her.

Tessa barely had time to react before he took her arm, leading her into the grand ballroom.

The opulence was dizzying. Colors, laughter, shimmering masks—a masquerade straight out of Phantom of the Opera. And yet, beneath the beauty, the danger lurked. This wasn’t a celebration. This was something else.

The music stopped.

A single, resounding chime echoed through the room.

The crowd parted, revealing two men dragging a body forward—a bloodied, barely-conscious figure.

Tessa’s breath caught.

Wyatt.
