The Weight of Truth
The Weight of Truth
The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, curling through the quiet house like an invitation to wake.
Lucas sat in the dim glow of dawn, lost in thought.
Cassie.
The day he found her.
Tessa had been out of town for a friend’s bachelorette party, unaware of the tragedy waiting for her at home. She had returned to a house filled with secrets, wrapped in whispered reassurances of how Cassie had died.
She fell from the tree, they told her.
Mother Monroe had been quick to dismiss any doubts, painting Cassie’s death as a child’s unpredictable misstep. But did Tessa ever truly believe it? Lucas wasn’t sure.
What he did know was her agony had been unbearable—so suffocating that his guilt became its own living thing inside him.
If she ever learned the truth, she would hate him.
And maybe she should.
Lucas had already hurt her—pushed her away when all she had ever done was love him. They had grown up together. Survived so much together. And yet, in his weakest moments, he had treated her like an afterthought.
Everything had changed when he turned twenty. Cassie was born. Suddenly, he was a father, a husband—all within a single year. Too fast. Too much.
Then, when Cassie turned one, his father had come to him.
It was time.
The Monroe family had always been hunters—specialists in the occult, experts in tracking and eliminating the supernatural. Lucas had resisted as long as he could, his mother fighting for him in quiet defiance against his father.
She had wanted better for him.
She had wanted better for Tessa.
But Lucas had been pulled into the darkness anyway.
And when it became too much, he had turned to Camille.
She had understood the weight of his name, the relentless pressure of being Lucas Monroe, the hunter.
But sometimes, in the deepest corners of his mind, he wondered—If he had told Tessa everything, would they still be together?
Ash exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair.
"I don’t understand Amara."
They sat in Tessa’s living room, the space heavy with unspoken emotions. Ash was still struggling to process everything—Amara’s confession, Lucas’s presence, Tessa’s tangled past.
Was Tessa clueless? Had she truly known nothing about Lucas’s life as a hunter?
It seemed impossible for her to have been married to a Monroe without learning something.
Lucas was watching them, eyes calculating. Ash knew what he was thinking.
Would he kill Amara?
Would he kill Ash?
Amara sighed, her voice quiet but firm. "I didn’t want to tell you without knowing for sure," she repeated for the third time. "The day I met Tessa… it was like a memory unlocked. All I could see was that dead child. And now, I feel guilty."
She swallowed hard, gaze dropping to her lap. "If I hadn’t snooped around. If I hadn’t asked Maximus about the name Monroe… this might never have happened."
Ash stayed silent, processing.
He would need to speak with Lucas. Find the missing pieces.
And he wasn’t sure he could stomach what he might hear.
But if working with Tessa’s ex-husband would bring her back safely, then pride didn’t matter.
He loved her.
He hadn’t said it yet. But he loved her.
And nothing else mattered but getting her back.
Jax scanned the wreckage around them, the mess he and Lucas had made in the search for answers.
Tessa was missing.
Every moment they wasted put her deeper in danger.
After the chaos from the fught with Wyatt, Jax had called Lucas. She needed to get far away from Falls Hollow.
Lucas hadn’t known another hunter was in town. It didn’t surprise him.
Falls Hollow had always been a place of activity—hunters came here to increase their kill counts, hone their skills, track creatures that blurred the line between myth and nightmare.
But what did surprise Lucas was Jax’s observation.
Something was happening between Tessa and the vampire.
Jax had seen it—the way she had protected Alistair, defended him.
Jax exhaled slowly. He had accepted the truth long ago—Tessa was never his to claim.
He had walked out of her life months ago.
He would always love her.
Just not romantically.
She deserved happiness.
And right now, she deserved to be saved.
Lucas watched as Ash draped a blanket over Amara’s sleeping form.
The sun was starting to rise.
They needed sleep before they could put a plan in motion.
Ash turned to Lucas, jaw clenched.
"Did she know you were a hunter?"
Lucas met his stare.
This question would seal their fate forever.
He could see Ash holding his breath, waiting for the truth.
Finally, Lucas answered.
"No."
One word.
Heavy. Unforgiving.
Ash exhaled and walked away.
Lucas watched as he disappeared into Tessa’s room—he was searching for the letter.
He needed to know.
Needed to understand what had gone wrong.
Because if he was going to have a future with Tessa, he had to make sure she wanted it—baggage and all.
As dawn painted the sky in pale hues, the vampires slept.
Lucas and Jax left
They would return tonight.
Lucas had work to do.
He had to save Tessa.
And he had to vanquish the monster that had killed his daughter—once and for all.
