Chapter 549 Set You Free
Chapter 549 Set You Free
There was a knock on the door.
After getting the go-ahead, Wesley walked in. "Mr. Wilson, it's not safe to stay here too long. Should we get Ms. Smith out of here first?"
Without missing a beat, Olivia shot back, "I'm not leaving. I'll go once he's a bit better."
Her reasons for staying were complicated.
Besides the slight guilt she felt towards Daniel, Olivia was also driven by a strong curiosity.
They had known each other for years and had been married for quite some time, yet she felt like she never truly understood Daniel.
She wanted to know what Daniel's life was really like.
This might be their last chance to truly understand each other.
"Let's not worry about me right now. Have you found out who was behind the truck attack?"
Connecting all the strange occurrences, Olivia couldn't help but suspect that the mastermind might be the same people targeting her.
There were too many questions, and Olivia couldn't piece them together. She could only hope Wesley had found some clues.
Wesley looked troubled. He glanced at Daniel, seemingly hesitant to speak.
Daniel clearly didn't want her to know either, his expression conflicted.
"You should leave here first. I'll figure this out."
"Daniel, what do you take me for? I'm a victim, too. Don't I have the right to know the truth?"
"I'm just trying to protect you."
Daniel coughed lightly, pain evident in his eyes.
Olivia had never been so angry. She felt belittled, tears welling up as she looked at Daniel. "I have the right to know."
She could accept being ignored or misunderstood by everyone else, but Daniel was her closest person. They had once been inseparable. Why was he hiding things from her?
Olivia wiped her tears away, and the next moment, she heard Daniel's helpless sigh.
"You don't know how dangerous this is. I don't want you involved. You and the kids are innocent."
"We are innocent, but using that as an excuse to keep me in the dark for so long, haven't I been hurt enough?"
Olivia showed the scars on her arm. "Besides the wound from your gunshot, I have many other scars."
Seeing those shocking scars, Daniel fell silent.
His so-called protection seemed to have done little good.
"I know how much you used to love me, but what did I get in return? Besides the things money could buy, I knew nothing about you. If it weren't for this accident, I wouldn't even know your true identity."
Olivia had long suspected that Daniel's identity was not simple, but it was just a guess.
She felt like a beautiful vase placed in his mansion, meant to be admired but never able to truly enter Daniel's heart.
There might not have been much love between them, but Olivia couldn't accept that.
"Was your love for me like a rich person playing with a pet? Giving treats when happy and ignoring when not?"
Daniel tensed up at her words, quickly denying, "Of course not. I just didn't want you involved."
"Stop making decisions for me, treating me like you know what's best."
Seeing him silent, Olivia turned to Wesley. "It's come to this. Just spill it."
Wesley, not daring to make decisions on his own, looked nervously at Daniel.
After a moment of silence, Daniel reluctantly said, "Fine, she's not an outsider. Go ahead."
Wesley closed the door and sighed. "This incident isn't related to the previous organization. Their target was you. The attempt on Ms. Smith was just collateral."
Olivia was shocked.
So her suspicions were right. These people were really after Daniel.
Was it just because of his identity?
Hearing this, Olivia felt a surge of anxiety. "Do you know who it is?"
"It's a remnant of an underground faction."
Wesley spoke cautiously about the past.
"Ten years ago, security wasn't as tight as it is now. The city was filled with crime syndicates and organization hubs. Many people were dragged into the abyss by these groups, which were involved in illegal activities like drug trafficking and gambling."
"Back then, Mr. Wilson went undercover in these criminal organizations for years to take them down, even capturing their domestic bases. But this also stepped on many toes."
After explaining, Wesley spoke earnestly, "Ms. Smith, you might not believe other things, but you must believe that Mr. Wilson kept your marriage a secret to protect you."
Thinking about their marriage, Olivia felt a pang of sadness.
She had been with Daniel for so many years, yet she never got a proper status.
"You can explain it that way, but what about Ava, Daniel? Aren't you afraid her identity will be exposed?"
These matters were too complex to explain, so Wesley wisely stepped back. "This is a family matter. Mr. Wilson should tell you himself."
Olivia's eyes were filled with pain, seemingly questioning Daniel.
Daniel looked at her helplessly. "The only person I wanted to protect was you. Ava wasn't part of my considerations."
But their wedding was so grand. If it wasn't real love, why would Daniel compromise?
Olivia clearly didn't believe him.
After all the ups and downs, their trust was already on shaky ground.
"I was in danger before. I couldn't risk your safety. All my privileges came from military achievements. Now that my identity is exposed, staying with me is more dangerous than being alone."
Was he really asking her to leave for her safety?
If what he said was true, staying in the military hospital might not be safe either.
"Have you considered coming with me to the island? Few people know about it. We shouldn't be found there."
After she said this, Daniel shook his head. "I don't want to bring you any more trouble. Staying in the military zone is safer. They have a bounty on me for a hundred million dollars. Going out would be more dangerous."
A hundred million dollars wasn't much to Daniel, but a contract with a killer organization couldn't be settled with money.
After explaining, Daniel's eyes dimmed. "Leaving is the best choice, Olivia. I'm setting you free."
