Chapter 5 — Second Chances
The next morning I took my children aside and told them what their father and I had discussed. “So what do you two think? I want your honest opinions. Do you think we should give you father a second chance or not,” I asked them. Knowing full well of what they would say but I wanted them to feel included in whatever happened.
My sweet little Emma was first to speak up. “I don’t think we should give dad another chance. You’ve always told us that we should give second chances as long as they didn’t hurt anyone on their first chance. Right mom and dad clearly hurt us,” And there you have it folks my twelve year old daughter using my words against me. “Yes your right Emma,” I said with a smile amazed at how mature she has gotten.
I looked over at Ethan who obviously agreed with his little sister and just groaned. “I don’t really think we should but if it’s what you want then I’ll support your decision."
I decided to take the rest of the day to make my decision known to Kirt. I guess I was still having trouble deciding if I should let him back in or not. He did sound really sincere but I still couldn’t shake this feeling that he wasn’t totally truthful. I knew I couldn’t make this decision based solely on me and my feelings. I needed to base it on what was best for my children and they needed him. Emma was a daddy’s girl even though she is truly angry at him she would be more upset later on with herself if she didn’t get a chance to forgive him. Poor Ethan needed to be able to forgive his father for his past deeds. He is at that age where he needs his father in his life.
When we awoke the next morning I let Kirt in on the good news. He was extremely happy with my decision even though I still couldn’t shake the feeling he was still deceiving me. I saw Ethan looking over at me obviously picking up on the same vibe from his father. Ethan has always been very good at picking up on people's true vibes. Right before we sat down to breakfast a knock came on the front door. “Hello all, I’m Mike the caretaker, I was just letting everyone know that the storm has passed and the roads are finally opened up,” He advised happily. “Yes!” Ethan yelled out making us jump. He jumped up so fast from his chair it hit the floor as he ran into his room to start packing. I thanked Mike as he left to inform everyone else. Emma went and packed up her things while her dad and I packed up the rest of our things.
It took almost a whole day to get back to our cozy home, since we spent most of the time following behind a snowplow.
We were so happy when we pulled up into our driveway. It was as if everything that had happened to us had been just a dream we were all laughing and talking like we did before our week of hell. I wished it was all a dream but I know that it wasn’t so I have to keep reminding myself to keep my guard up and not to trust anything that Kirt says.
I downloaded an app onto my iPhone that lets me know everything and everyone that Kirt does and talks to. Next on my to-do list was to go talk with a lawyer about what I could do to protect myself and my children. This is where my OCD about planning ahead comes in handy. I know that I have got to get things in order because I know my husband isn't done with his little whore and I'm not about to be left high and dry due to his infidelity.
Kirt was the perfect husband and father for a couple of months.(At least I think he was.) Until one day when he was in the shower and I heard his phone go off. Thinking that it could be a work message I go take a look at who had sent him a message only to discover it was from some woman named Amber telling him that she couldn't wait to go away with him for the weekend. I sit his phone back down on the table. Now I knew the name of his whore. God I needed a stiff drink. I go to my little hiding spot above the refrigerator and pour me a shot of Crown "Damn I hate being right," I moaned. "Okay if this is how he wants to play I'm game."
To get things started the next morning, I decided to call my lawyer and had him to go ahead and draw up the divorce papers. Next, I made up Kirt’s favorite strawberry Jello and put some of the belladonna berries in it. I went back to the cabins that we had been stuck in to find out if it was the place that my loving husband was going to be this weekend with his little floozy. The Caretaker of the cabins confirmed my suspension. He was also willing not to mention my coming by to anyone who came asking, especially after I had explained to him what Kirt was up to. He started telling me about how he found out his soon-to-be ex-wife had been cheating on him and, if he had the nerve, he would have gotten revenge also. Before I left he also was nice enough to tell me what cabin Kirt was going to be staying in.
I then made my usual stop by Old Man John's cabin. I've been stopping by there ever since I met him when we were stuck up here in the blizzard. He has no family left so I decided to come by every once in a while to make sure he was alright and take him to the store to get him out for some fresh air.
Before heading back home I stopped at the cabin that Kirt will be staying at. With gloves on, I opened the door and placed some Jello boxes in the cabinet and a single belladonna berry underneath the cabinet.
The Jello was Kirt’s favorite, so I knew he wouldn't be able to resist trying a bite. His mistress on the other hand, well let’s just say it wouldn’t hurt me if she died too. The police and investigators would likely think that they mistakenly thought the berries were edible. So, either way, it would be a win-win for me. Kirt along with his mistress would be dead.
I couldn’t help but laugh all the way back home. Of course I had to pull over a couple of times because I was laughing so hard I was crying. I was still laughing when I pulled up in the driveway. I had to sit inside my car for a bit to calm myself down. After a bit I wiped my eyes and grabbed the groceries from the backseat.
For the next few days I couldn’t relax. I was so nervous about the weekend and if my plan would really work. I mean I’m sorry but I don’t look good in orange.
