Chapter208
Outside the car window, the wind blew through the trees and made a loud rustling sound.
“I knew you were mad all along.”
There was something suppressed in Maxwell’s voice. He looked up and glanced at the trees outside the car window.
“I knew you should be mad at me.
“Roxanne’s thing hurt you.”
“But Steph, I had my reasons.
Stephanie looked at Maxwell’s profile, listening to the words he was still saying even now.
She suddenly laughed.
Yeah, he always had his reasons, always had things he couldn’t help. What about her?
She didn’t even know, all these years, what she really meant to him.
“Recently, I often thought about the days we used to have,” Maxwell
said.
“I often spaced out, always felt like things shouldn’t be this way.”
“I remembered the day we made it official, thought about the first time I kissed you, thought about the first time we lay together, you curled up in my arms, saying you loved me, saying we’d never be apart.”

“I still remembered the days we worked hard together.”
“I remembered we both reached an agreement, both thought the old days were over, and if we kept doing the old business, we’d just get left behind, the Humphrey Group should change, and then we went to work hard together.”
“I kept thinking about how we did team research again and again, led the team to break through tech blockades and went abroad to get contracts, thought about those days we fought so hard, and…”
“And that child we… lost.”
Maxwell’s nose stung badly, and his feelings were all over the place. He almost couldn’t keep up the act of looking at the trees outside being blown by the wind.
He stopped, couldn’t go on.
Stephanie sighed softly, she didn’t look at Maxwell, but looked out the other window.
She tried to steady her breathing so she would look calm.
“You said you would stay with me, and you actually did.”
“But I promised you, and I haven’t done it yet.”
He said, “But I would, I would be your support, I promised you.”
“Steph.” He called her name again.
But she didn’t respond!
Stephanie looked out the window.
She didn’t dare let him see her expression right now.

Once…
It really was great back then.
Those days when we fought and struggled together, even though things were tough and there were lots of difficulties, they relied on each other and made it through.
She once thought that after so many days and nights, even if at the beginning he only had a bit of real feelings for her, after all that time, he would love her a lot, and they would spend the rest of their lives together.
They were always each other’s strongest choice.
But…
Not long after they got married, his heart went off track.
She couldn’t believe it, seven years together still lost to his quick crush on Roxanne.
She just lost like that.
Or maybe she never really saw him.
She didn’t know.
“Trust me, okay?” Maxwell’s voice came.
Stephanie lowered her eyes a little, took a deep breath, and said, “What about Roxanne?”
She said softly, “Maxwell, how am I supposed to trust you?”
The air suddenly went quiet.
Stephanie gritted her teeth, trying hard to hold back.

A few seconds later, Maxwell said, “She was only five months old.”
“Five months later, everything went back to where it was.”
Stephanie laughed, and tears kept streaming down her face.
“Maxwell, do you think I was that cheap, just watching you be with her? And then, staying quiet and doing whatever you said?”
She looked at him, trying to find something in his eyes.
Did he really think that, even though she knew her husband was having an affair with another woman, and knew he wanted a divorce just to make that other woman happy, she wouldn’t be mad at all, would forgive him, and then come back to him like nothing happened a few months later?
It was like that part in the middle never existed?
Stephanie almost said all of this.
I thought about how I’d be getting the divorce papers tomorrow.
Her last bit of sanity held her back.
In the end, she just said, “A month ago, you were the one who asked me for a divorce. How do you expect me to trust you? Maxwell, what did you really take me for?”
Maxwell frowned. He wanted to reach out and wipe the tears off her face, but she slapped his hand away.
“You are my wife.” He looked at her as she turned away and said softly.
“Tomorrow won’t be,” she mumbled.
