Chapter 199
She felt like she was about to die.
The last thing she saw was a familiar figure.
There was also an angry line: “Alfonso, I warned you!”
Maxwell saved her again.
She dialed a random number and got through to Maxwell.
So, he came.
He drove Alfonso away and picked her up.
“Don’t be afraid, I’m here,” he said five years ago.
And five years later, now, in the seaside restaurant.
Stephanie took another sip of her drink and held back her feelings.
“He was supposed to laugh.” Stephanie put down her drink, “After all, he hated me that much.”
Ten years in prison.
Five years ago, Maxwell collected evidence. It wasn’t just about beating up Stephanie–he dug up all kinds of illegal stuff he did and got him sent in.
Still didn’t know what way to use to get Alfonso and Monica divorced.
Like that, she finally cut ties with that demon for good.

“So, you brought me here on purpose.” Stephanic looked at Maxwell and said, “To remember the old days?”
Maxwell just looked at her, looked at her slightly red eyes.
He shook his head.
“Just booked this place,” he said.
Stephanie nodded and tried hard to hold back her feelings.
She said, “If there’s nothing else, I guess we’re pretty much done with this meal?”
“You asked me to bring Belinda over, and I already came.”
“What else did you want to do?”
It was already completely dark.
“Let’s dance.” Maxwell looked at the woman in front of him.
She was thin, her eyes a bit red, and her tied–up hair was neatly gathered at the back of her head. She looked really pretty.
But what he saw was what she looked like when she was a kid.
Many years ago that summer, for countless days and nights, he was like a rat in the gutter, secretly watching their family’s happiness.
Back then, he also wanted to dance with her.
So he said, “Like when you were a kid.”
Maxwell went to turn on the music, walked up to her, and gave her a little bow to invite her to dance.
Stephanie looked at his hand in front of her, and she felt a little sad.

She thought of her father and mother again.
Back in those years, the Shelton family was at its peak, and Elliot was the most promising one in Haraville to become the fourth big shot.
the Shelton family, Monica, Stephanie…
It was really impressive.
The three of them used to be so happy.
She thought their family of three could be this happy forever.
Back then, Dad and Mom loved each other so much, but Dad died, and
Mom…
She remembered that when she went to her mom to adopt Belinda, she called Monica “mom.”
But Monica didn’t let her call her that.
All these years, her mom had always been distant from her.
Maybe over at Mom’s place, it was a different story.
“Stephanie?” Maxwell called.
Stephanie pulled herself out of her memories, put her hand in his palm, and stood up with his help.
Waltz.
The music flowed softly, and they danced together gently.
She was surrounded by his scent, he held her and led her to dance gently to the music.
“Many things weren’t what I wanted,” he said in her ear, “but in the

end, this was how it turned out.”
She looked up and saw he was looking down at her eyes.
“I knew you were mad all along.”
Maxwell said softly, “Mad at me for ruining our marriage, mad at me for insisting on being with Roxanne, and also mad at Estrella for targeting the old members of the Shelton Group.”
“Steph.”
He called her name.
“Five months later, everything went back to the way it was. Nothing changed. We were still the same as before.”
The dance music stopped.
Stephanie pulled her hand away from his.
She took a step back to keep some distance between herself and him.
He seemed like he wanted to say something, but she turned away and didn’t look at him.
Just like before?
They couldn’t go back to how things were.
A lot of things, once they happened, just couldn’t go back to how they
were.
The heart was dead, and it wouldn’t come back to life.
“Tomorrow morning at 9.” Stephanie said.
Stephanie pushed down all her emotions and tried hard to steady her

voice. She said to him, “Take the receipt and all the documents you need.”
“We met at the courthouse entrance.”
After Stephanie finished talking, she went to hug Belinda.
“Edgar and the others weren’t here yet, and we couldn’t drive after drinking. Let’s take a photo, just as a souvenir,” Maxwell said.
