Chapter 76 Let her go.
Damian’s POV.
City lights shined brightly on the street. I stood in front of the glass as my eyes searched over the city.
My night hasn’t been night lately, I barely closed my eyes.
My body feels her, my heart longed for her.
I had always wished we could go back to where it started.
Maybe I would love her, maybe she could see what I had always felt for her.
If I hadn’t hesitated, if I hadn’t doubted myself, if I had given her a little slight of hope, maybe, just maybe…
Now I can only watch her smile happily with my brother.
Whenever I saw them together, my heart would ache painfully.
Regret. It has eaten what’s left of me.
I had her once and didn’t cherish her. And now, she belongs to another.
I clenched my hand on the table, my heart sinking.
Maybe she wasn’t meant for me, fate had other plans.
To hell with fate, why does it always take away things that are meant to be mine?
There was a knock on the door.
Come in, I said, sinking into my seat.
“Sir,” my assistant said, pulling out a file.
“I found something on Lucia,” he handed the files over to me.
Anger flared in my heart as I read through it.
She didn’t go abroad to further her studies, she was sleeping around with different men.
“I got something else too,” he dropped another file on the table.
My heart still for a moment.
This was the woman I had hurt Isla for? No way, stupid me.
She had other plans on me all along? How dare she?
“She was caught and arrested today, at the company.”
“Hmmm,” I snorted. “Serves her right.”
“What did she do?” I asked, a smirk tugging on my face.
“She was working as a spy for Isla’s father.”
“Send this to the station where she’s being held. They should add it to her charge.”
“Yes sir,” he replied, walking away.
A deep sigh left my throat as I stood, reaching for my coat.
It’s time I let go of the past and focus on the future.
Dante was standing by the entrance when I arrived home.
We haven’t seen each other since he had claimed Isla as his wife.
And I have never blamed him.
If I hadn’t failed in my duty of being a husband, he wouldn’t have had her.
Not all mistakes could be corrected, no matter how you try to.
“You’re home,” he said, walking beside me.
“Why are you standing here alone? Where’s she?”
I handed the butler my coat when we stepped inside the living room.
“She is resting, it’s been a long day.”
“How are you taking care of her father and her siblings? I heard about Lucia, I’m glad you had her locked up.”
A smile flickered on his face, something he hadn’t done in years.
“I was thinking you’d come after me for locking her up.”
I poured glasses of wine for us.
“You did the right thing. She shouldn’t overstep her boundary just because she was given the privilege to.”
Silence stretched between us for a moment, then he cleared his throat.
“I know I haven’t been fair to you all this while. I sincerely apologize for that. I just want us to live together in harmony.”
Our glass kissed each other.
“I wish mom and dad were still here…”I said, lifting my head to the sky.
He patted my shoulder like he always did when we were kids.
“I’m sure they’ll be happy seeing us strive together.”
We’ve always had each other’s back, no matter what.
And he had been the best brother I could ever ask for.
Morning came in a short while. There was nothing to worry about anymore.
Making peace with my brother was the best choice.
I hadn’t slept like a baby in a long while, and I didn’t remember closing my eyes.
I shot out of bed in one go.
Today shouldn't be like other ones, I wanted to make something meaningful out of it.
Let the past be in the past and shouldn’t hinder the present from striving.
