Chapter 65 How dare you?
Dante’s POV.
The day ended slower than I had expected it to.
Isla didn’t say anything to me, I didn’t have the courage to ask either.
We had attended three meetings together, standing shoulder to shoulder with each other, quiet.
When she managed to look at me her eyes stared coldly.
And when she managed to talk to me, her words sounded like venom.
“Are you okay?” I had asked when we finished the last meeting for the day.
She only waved a hand at me as she walked passed like we didn’t know each other.
My assistant hasn’t reached out to me all day. That was getting on my nerves.
My hand reached for my phone screen to dial her number, but a knock came at the door.
She came inside, face cold, body straight, and legs steady.
A deep sign left my throat. cheeks flushing even when I pretended to compose myself.
We didn’t say anything for seconds.
We stared at each other, really stared at each other.
Her eyes didn’t shy away, unlike her. She had always shied away anytime we kept an eye contact.
“You’ve been acting weird for days. Is everything okay?”
She cleared her throat, twisting her hands at her sides.
“I’m okay. I just need some time alone.”
That was unlike her, the Isla I know had always been a lively person.
Last time she said she needed some time alone, and now, the same thing.
Was she really going to slowly slip away from me?
My feet slowly rose from my seat.
“Why are you doing this to me, Isla?” I asked, voice steady.
She didn’t say anything, her eyes darted to the glass walls, and then back to mine.
In two strides, I closed the distance between us.
I gripped her waist and piled her close to mine.
She didn’t pull away, she didn’t show any slight of struggle.
My hand found her chin and slowly pulled it closer to mine.
“Can you please talk to me, Isla?”
“Why are you so cold to me?”
“I’ve been in your game for too long, I no longer know who to trust.”
My lungs flared hot, my heart sank.
“What games, sweetheart?”
Her hands gripped the collar of my shirt for balance.
I slowly moved my lips to her neck as she gasped.
“Do you enjoy these little dirty games you’ve been playing with me?” She said as a moan escaped her throat.
“Honey, you’re scaring me.”
“Am I?” A smirk tugged at her lips.
“What have you been up to lately?” My lips found her neck, kissing them slightly.
“Why do you care?”
I hesitated for some moment. “Because you’re my woman.”
“Or your pretty chess piece?”
“What chess pieces sweetheart?”
My hand moved to the smaller of her back.
“We really need to have a proper conversation honey.”
“Keep that for another day. I’m not interested anyway.”
She pulled away as I staggered back.
“I need a day off.”
“For what? Is everything okay?”
“Can you do that for me,” her voice was low and broken.
I stepped away from her toward my seat.
“Sit,” I ordered.
She gently pulled a chair and sat across from me.
“Is everything okay with your family?”
She gave a nod. “I have some family issues I want ti handle. I don’t think I can make it back to work.”
“Sure.” I said.
Not talking to her made me feel like my world was crashing.
But not seeing her for twenty four hours soup feel like my life was about to end.
“Don’t exhaust yourself too much. Just call me when you need anything.”
“I will,” she stands to leave.
“Isla,” she turned.
“I love you!” She didn’t say anything, her steps were steady as the door closed behind her.
Her question settled in my mind.
My heart raced and pierced as if a needle was pricked into it.
My phone rang.
My assistant called, panting.
“Boss,” he said.
“Why are you breathing like that? Are you being chased?”
“No, boss. Lucia finally spilled the beans.”
“She was there the night you were having a conversation with your brother.”
He cleared his throat, mouth twitching.
“She told Isla about the twin switch.”
“What?”
“Yes. She said that, herself.”
If I was in Isla’s position, I would hate me, too.
I’m so sorry honey. I whispered to myself, throat dry.
I promise to make those who gave you a hard time pay.
