Chapter 49 Who are you really?
Isla’s POV.
“Is he insane?” My stomach tightened. The hallway looked quiet.
I hardly recalled the incident that happened last night.
“How did I end up sleeping on his bed?” I pressed my palms on my flaming cheeks.
“Good morning, Mr. Smith.” I greeted.
Mr. Smith had always been the one who drove me around…
He was one of the good people I could interact with, without being afraid or worried.
He was like a father to me. And I had always respected him since the day I stepped my foot in here.
“Good morning, Mrs.” He bowed slightly, I held his hands.
“I’ve always told you not to do that,” I aurged.
“No, Mrs. That’s what I’m supposed to do…”
“It’s fine. I’ll be driving today.”
His voice melted. “No, Mrs. That’s my job.”
“Sir won’t be happy if he hears that I wasn’t at work.”
The side of my lips carved a faint smile. “You don’t need to worry about that… I’ll handle it myself.”
I stretched my hands across from his, and snatched the car key.
“Take it as your day off.” I raised my hands to the air, waving at him.
Today, I just wanted to be me. Not Isla Benettie. Not Isla Romano.
Just me. I turned the key and the car engine revived to life.
I sped off into the streets without hesitation.
I’ve been locked in these cage and manipulation of my father, for far too long.
It was time to break free.
The ride was a smooth one. I hadn’t really had to the courage to drive, all my life.
I was always scared. What if I get batched by a car? Or if I crash.
But today, I didn’t care about any of that.
When I got to the office, He was already seated in his office.
And as usual, he had my breakfast placed on my table.
Hot coffee and milk. And a sandwich.
“Today, isn’t just going to be like every other days.”
“Today marks the beginning of my new life. And nothing changes that.”
My hand found my system, and the day began.
“You look happy today.” I raised my head.
He was there. Damian, arms folded, face unreadable.
“Sure I am.” I replied.
“I think you should maintain this energy everyday, it’s really good.” He added.
Our eyes flickered together.
“I just want to be me. Without hesitation or restrictions.
The day went by as usual. Meetings, business partnerships and so on….
When it was finally over, I made my way to the garage.
But he refused to let me go.
“I asked if you wanted to have kids with me? And you ran off, Isla.”
“I had to, you sounded ridiculous to me.”
I replied, clutching my hands at my side.
“Did I?” He closed the distance between us.
I stagared backward, as heat gathered on my thighs.
“You aren’t serious about it, are you?” I asked.
“I heard your father asked you to get pregnant for me.” He cut in.
My gaze sharpened toward his, sharp as a knife.
How did he know about that? How did he even find out?
“I don’t mind you being the mother of my kids, Isla.” His hand slid to mine now.
“How did you? How did you know about that?.”
Does he have someone beside my father? Was he standing outside the door?
How the hell did he know?
This was a secret that shouldn’t be heard by an outsider, especially those who saw me as a thorn on their flesh.
“Nothing gets passed me,” he purred. “As long as I’m alive. And wants to dig into it.”
Sometimes I doubted if he was my husband’s brother or the man I was supposed to marry.
They way he always did his moved, it gets me scared and curious.
The Damian I had people talk about wasn’t this ruthless.
But what I see in this one, it tells me that he was the Don.
The way he walked, spoke, controlled everything around him, including me.
“Sometimes, I feel like you’re the real Don I was supposed to get married to.”
He paused midair, a little wicked smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
I was so eager to see his reaction. But they weren’t what I was expecting.
He was so calm. He went with the flow. Was he pretending to be incontrol? Or was he really Damian?
“Do I really look like my brother?..”
“Sometimes you act off for the Damian I’ve always heard about.”
He grabbed my waist closer to his. “Humans are created to be perfect, honey.”
Was I really thinking too much? Maybe I should put my doubts away for now.
“I should be going. I don’t like driving at night.”
“Where’s your driver? Slacking off?”
“I had asked him to take a day off,” I defended.
“He isn’t the only driver available.”
“I just wanted to take a solo ride today.”
“Get inside the car. I’ll drive us home myself.”
He held the door for me. He excused his driver. He drove off.
The ride home was a funny one, until we were really heading home.
“That isn’t the road to the house, where are you taking me to?”
“Somewhere I had always wanted us to visit together.”
My heart hit my rib cage. “What was he up to this time?”
“Where could that be?” I managed to gather the words on my lips.
He didn’t say anything, just focused on the road.
“You’re getting me scared.” My stomach knotted.
“You don’t have to be scared honey. I don’t eat humans.”
Come on, Isla. You’ve know him for a year now, I murmured to myself.
You’ve always been safe with him, my head was so messed up I couldn’t think staight.
“But I want to know where we’re headed to?”
His eyes found mine, hands on the stirring.
“To a place you don’t get to be scared when you bend over for me.”
