Chapter 39 Sensation in my heart
Isla’s POV.
The morning light hit the window, bright and hot.
I was still lying down flat and tired on the bed. Last night had been a different story.
Damian had defended me in front of my husband, like I was his possession.
The way he bantered words with him, made me kind of excited.
They look exactly the same. I had never seen both of them standing together. But yesterday was fire.
My hands slid down to my thigh where he had touched me before his assistant informed us about his brother’s appearance at the hotel where we were.
The words he whispered still lingered in my ears like smoke.
Nobody had ever defended me the way he did yesterday, not even my husband.
I quietly stood up from the bed and made my way to the bathroom.
I didn’t really care about what Lucas had said about me last night, she didn’t matter.
But looking at the twins closely, their behavior really looked different. Damian was colder than my husband.
I almost thought he was Dante, my husband. He looked colder, his aura was commanding and poised.
I shook the thoughts of my head, maybe it was just my own imagination. Or maybe I had been thinking about him lately.
I wasn’t going to work today. I’ll have all the time and day to myself.
My husband might probably be out with his Lucia. He doesn’t change even when he acts guilty.
I was thinking about giving him a chance for redemption, but he proved me wrong last night. He didn’t deserve any shred of my dignity.
Today he acts guilty and pitiful, and the next day, he’s totally someone else entirely.
If Lucia is who he wants, then he should have her, because I was done playing saint with him.
Breakfast was already served when I went downstairs.
He was seated, going through his phone, face cold, as usual.
I didn’t look at him, I went straight to a seat far away from his.
“Morning,” I whispered, pulling out a chair to sit down.
He didn’t say anything, and I didn’t care either.
I picked up a fork and a knife and dug into the sandwich on the table.
He still didn’t say anything to me. We sat like strangers.
When I finished my breakfast and was about to exit the dining hall, he cleared his throat.
I stilled.
“Looks like you enjoy being with him,” he purred, voice icy cold.
“And you enjoy being with her too,” I shot back, voice calm.
“We were only there for a business meeting… nothing happened between us,” he defended.
“I was only there with him, because he helped me, and nothing happened between us.”
The room went dead silent for a moment.
He stood up from his seat, walking slowly toward where I was standing.
“I saw how he held you intimately, Isla.” He spat.
“That was because my feet were hurt,” I defended myself.
“And you let him carry you,” the ice in his tone got ticker. “What do you even think of me?”
“Why do you act insecure?” I fired, voice calm. “I saw the way Lucia held you… so intimately.”
The expression on his face changed. His hands kept squeezing the cup around it, pulling a crack on it.
“You’re my wife… Isla. How do you expect me to feel seeing you around another man? My own brother.”
“Don’t my emotions toward you being held by another woman matter?”
He froze. I had always been a quiet person. I’ve never raised my voice at him. I just walked away whenever we had an argument.
He walked closer, stopping an inch away from me.
My eyes met his. His eyes promised danger and warmth.
“You can’t keep hurting me, I’m human too…” I whispered, my voice was shaky now.
“I’m not hurting you, Isla, I love you. And I have nothing to do with Lucia.”
“But you keep letting her tremble on me. Every time you say you love me, I doubt it.”
He went silent.
“How was I supposed to love you? Aren’t my words and actions enough? What more do you want?”
“What actions? You call hurting and trembling on my feelings love? Come on, that’s bullshit! Who would want that kind of love?”
“I saw the way he looked at you, the way he defended you. Even the way he looked at him, you’ve never looked at me that way before, Isla.”
“Your love is too painful, I don’t think I can handle that,” I muttered.
When I wanted to walk away, he caught my wrist. “Can’t you see how hard I’m trying?”
I pulled his hands off. “I’ve tried to see how hard you’re trying, but I can’t. Your love is suffocating.”
I walked away.
I heard him throw a glass at the door, while I walked through the hallway.
I walked toward the garden, to get some fresh air, and brush off his thoughts from my head.
While I walked toward the flowers, I saw her standing beside the flowers, with a phone to her ear.
I didn’t really want to banter words with her, not today. I was exhausted from the drama staged by my husband earlier.
But something caught my attention. I heard a familiar voice on her phone.
It sounded so intimate. They talked like they were so familiar with each other.
I heard them saying something about her seducing my husband and transfer of assets.
I quickly hid behind a flower. I didn’t want her to know that I was there.
When she finished her call, she walked into the mansion, straightening her dress.
I stood up from my hiding, heart racing. What was she hiding?
And the person I heard her talking to, his voice sounded so familiar… like that of somebody close to me.
It sounded like my father’s voice.
Why was she talking to him? How did they get together? And what were they planning?
I stood there heart pounding.
What was my father planning? Was my husband being deceived too?
Was he even aware? So many thoughts went through my mind.
I quickly dialed Josie’s number… it rang once and she answered.
“Hey Jo,” I said, voice calm.
“Hey sis,” she whispered. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah…. Everything’s alright. I just wanted you to help me confirm someone for me.”
“Who’s that?” She asked, voice curious.
“I need you to confirm if Andre De Lucia has ever been to the house or the company.”
“Lucia, yeah… she stopped by yesterday. Dad said she was a business partner…”
My pulse stilled. “Okay… what are you…”
“I’ll call you later sis, Dad is back.”
“Okay, Jo..” The line went dead.
What was my father and Lucia planning?
