Chapter 79 THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE
CHAPTER 79
GRACE’S POV
THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE
“Are you sure you'll be okay?” Lily asked me for the nth time.
“I'm okay, Lily. Just go out and have fun.” I told her already pushing her out of the door.
Lily left for her date with Reed. I had to practically push her out to go, because she was scared I'll be sad on my own. But I told her to have fun, I can still perceive her perfume from the hallway, after she left a while ago.
I kept pacing around the window and the sink, just checking if I'll still see the black car again. But I didn't. I looked like a hunted animal checking everything out. Jeremy's text about coming still haunted me, but I texted him back that I'm sick.
I don't know what I'm going to do, I've run out of lies to tell. What will I say to him? What will I tell him to get him off my back?
Three knocks came from the door, like someone was giving a bad verdict for me. My stomach churned but I opened the door anyway. Only to see the Sheriff Mayor at my door, his shoulders were stiff and his expression was carved from stone.
I looked into his eyes. It wasn't like Jeremy's, it was cold and very distant.
“Evening, Miss Bennett,” he said, stepping inside without waiting for my permission. “We have loads to talk about.”
He walked into the middle of the sitting room, he was looking around like he was expecting to see someone, maybe Jeremy or Ryan.
“You know I saw Ryan, come this way before he went missing,” he says calmly, way too calmly with his hands in his pocket.
“Tell me what happened after he came here?” he asked, staring at me and I swallowed hard. My palms became sweaty.
“I…..I don't know. He came here and he left…
i wasn't…..i wasn't with him.”
He looked calm and very collected, he folds his arms. “Don't… Don't lie to me, Miss Bennett.”
I rubbed my arm and cleared my throat. “I'm not lying.”
He got closer and his voice was low. “You're shaking young lady.”
I closed my eyes and forced myself to breathe. “I was with Jeremy, okay? I blurted out. “Jeremy was here and I wasn't with Ryan.”
The Mayor blinked rapidly, he was confused. “My son was here?”
“Uhm ye…yes.”
I knew this was a wrong lie, and I could feel it because he wasn't buying it.
The Mayor suddenly winced in pain, but he pushed through it and leaned closer to me.
“What did you do to him, Miss Bennett?” he growled, his eyes narrowing. “Don't lie to me.”
My throat tightened and I couldn't breathe. “Ryan, he was here. But he….he attacked me.”
“Go on, Grace, answer my question.”
His voice dropped low and he glared at me. “Did you kill him, Miss Bennett?”
The words came out of my mouth, faster than I could stop it. “Yes, I'm sorry,” I whispered. “Yes I killed him, but it was in self defense.”
The room fell into great silence, and you could hear the sound of my beating heart.
The Mayor stared hard at me, with his mouth parted in disbelief.
“I have another question for you, Miss Bennett.” he breathed. “Did you kill my wife?”
My chest tightens, I've kept this secret for so many years. And saying it now felt like a burden to me.
“About that, it wasn't just,” I exhaled. “About your wife sir. I didn't mean it, it was an accident too. She swerved into the lake off the road. I really tried to save her, but I couldn't.” I sobbed.
“You……. Bitch.” his voice cracked. “You killed my wife?”
His eyes went wide and glassy. He staggered back gasping for air, his hand clutching his chest.
“No, no, no..”
He collapsed onto the floor, his body convulsing. His breathing came with a gurgling sound in his throat.
“Mr Meyers, sir!” I cried rushing to him.
But his breathing was fading fast, way too fast.
My hands were shaky when I grabbed my phone and dialed 911. That's the only thing I can do.
“911, What's your emergency?” the operator asked.
“I need an ambulance please! The Mayor collapsed! I don't know what's wrong with him!”
I pressed my hand to his shoulder, just trying everything to keep him conscious, but then his eyes rolled back. He wasn't breathing anymore and I got scared the most.
I dialed Jeremy's number with trembling hands. He answered on the third ring.
“Grace? What's the problem?”
“Jeremy….” my voice cracked. “It's your father. He collapsed and he's not breathing.”
“What? I'm on my way, Grace. Just stay with him.” The line went dead immediately.
Sirens lights flashed through the streets. The paramedics came in, lifting the Mayor onto the stretcher, performing CPR just trying everything they could.
But their long faces said the truth to me, before their mouths ever did. I stood stunned and numb as life was gone, from the one person who knew my secrets.
One paramedic turned to me with sad eyes.
“We're so sorry about this. We did everything we could. But we lost him.”
“No, no, no…..” I sobbed terribly. Why me?
And then I heard Jeremy's car screeched and stopped outside my house. He ran inside towards the house and me, with sadness and desperation in his eyes.
And as he got closer to my doorstep, one of the paramedics spoke loudly so he could hear.
“Sir, she was the only one with him, when he died.” she said glaring at me.
Jeremy's eyes napped sharply at me. It was very terrible, sharp, hurt and suspicious.
And that's when I knew that something had changed the course of my life tonight.
Why does he have to die in my house? A part of me was happy that he died, because he would've locked me up after my confessions.
But another part of me was scared of Jeremy's reaction to me, after hearing that his father died in my house tonight.
Tonight everything is about to crumble.
