Chapter 78 THE TRUTH TASTES BLEACH
CHAPTER 78
GRACE'S POV
THE TRUTH TASTES BLEACH
I couldn't sleep, not even for a wink. Every time I try to close my eyes, I'll always see Ryan's face. The twisted rage on his face, his hands on my throat, and the moment the jagged claw tooth went into him.
The horrible thud of his body on the floor, the deafening silence that followed. My chest tightened and I couldn't even pick up my phone buzzing. I felt like people saw me, and I could hear footsteps inside the house. I feel sick, jumpy and very scared, no one should ever know about what happened.
I was in this serious state until mid day, Lily pushed the front door open with grocery bags. I'm surprised because she lost her dear grandmother. The second she got inside the house, her nose wrinkled.
“Grace, why does it smell like bleach in here?” her eyes scanned the spotless house, and wiped clean floors.
She narrowed her eyes looking at me. “Okay, tell me what happened? Because this house smells like a cleaned crime scene.”
My mouth moved before I could control it. “Well, I um had, Jeremy over.” I paused, clearing my throat.
Lily froze with a smirk. “And….”
“Things got really kinky and messy,” I blurted. “Really messy, I had to clean this space.”
She stared at me, blinking slowly, then she let out a mischievous smile. “Oh, Ohhhh. Damn girl, didn't know the sheriff had it in him.”
I forced a smile so bad my jaw hurt, I touched my neck which I covered in tons of make up.
“Lily, I'm sorry about your nana.” I told her.
She nods weakly before responding. “Thanks, Grace. For everything, but it's fine now. She's in a better place.”
She left briefly just to shower, and my stomach twisted once I was alone. I wasn't cleaning up cum but blood, Ryan's blood. I'm happy he won't bother me, but I'm shocked it got to that point.
Bleach still clung to my nostrils, my nails still hurt from the extreme digging, and every atom in my body screamed for me to confess, but I wasn't going to bulge. No one will ever know about this, not even Jeremy and definitely not Lily.
It was up to an hour until someone knocking on my door. I opened it and it is Mackena.
She barged in wild hair, red eyes and breathing like she ran a marathon. “WHERE'S HE?” she shrieked.
I nearly dropped the remote in my hand. “Jesus! Mackena, where's who?” Lily asked from the top of the stairs.
“Ryan!” she jabbed a finger at me. “He's not home, no calls, no texts. No, nothing. What did you do to him?”
My heart pounded so loudly, I thought they'll hear it in the sitting room.
Lily came down with a pleasant smile. “That's, best news I've ever all week.”
Mackena gasped. “Lily!” she yelled.
“No,” Lily snapped. “Ryan was a walking disaster. If he's gone the quality of our life just improved.”
I balled my fist and swallowed hard. I couldn't say anything in my defense. Ryan wasn't just out of town, he's in the ground dead. He's never coming back again, I hope she'll stop digging about him. I steadied my breathing but I was still scared.
Mackena stepped closer to me, ignoring Lily's protective stance.
“He told me he was coming here, the day he vanished! He said he was going to talk to you. And now conveniently he's gone missing.”
She stared into my soul, like she could even read it.
“Something is not adding up,Grace. And you know it.” Mackena said.
Lily shoved her back with a frown. “Back off, bitch. Grace doesn't owe you shit. If your shitty boyfriend is missing, that's his business and the nearest ditch.”
Mackena’s face twisted in rage. “You both don't get it. He won't disappear on me just like that. And every time something bad happens, she's always at the center of it.” she points at me.
I lifted my chin, and steadied my voice. “Maybe he ran away from the law. Or maybe he ran from his punishment again, or from you. Whatever be the case, I'm not involved here.”
“I don't know where Ryan is.” I said in a sharp voice.
But I sure did know what happened to him. He's silent forever, he's under the mud beside the lake.
Mackena’s breathing was shallow, and she was hysterical too. “You think you're smart, Grace. You think you can do this again?”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Can you leave, Mackena.”
But she didn't listen, she got closer to me, her voice low and lethal. “If he doesn't show up within twenty four hours. I'm going to the cops.”
I rolled my eyes at her, but I was dying inside me. Chills ran down my spine, police and investigation again. Asking questions I didn't want to answer. Could there be any evidence that I missed? Maybe foot prints, blood stains, cameras, maybe any witness to the crime I missed.
“Do whatever you want, Mackena. You won't find anything on me.” I said quietly but my blood was frozen.
Mackena stared long and hard at me, like she knew I was lying and she was telling the truth.
“Get out, Mackena. Or I'll be suing you for trespassing.” Lily snapped at her.
“I want to see you try, you freak!” Mackena yelled at her before storming out.
The moment the door slammed shut, my knees became wobbly.
But Lily touched my shoulder gently. “Grace… are you okay? Is she affecting you?” she asked me.
I forced myself to breathe, to survive, to even speak.
“I'm okay, Lily. I'm used to her emotional outburst.”
“Grace, you know, I'm always here for you.” Lily said in a calm voice.
I just hugged her because I really needed that. I looked out the window over Lily's shoulder, to see a black car which I hadn't seen before cruising around the area.
It was watching, observing and waiting to take down notes. And I just remembered the Mayor's words to me.
