Chapter 122 The Last Trial
Chapter 122 The Last Trial
Aeloria POV
By the time the sun began sinking toward the horizon, painting the sea in molten gold and crimson, the entire island had gathered once more.
This was it. The final trial. I stood at the front of the crowd with my mates surrounding me, their familiar presence grounding the nervous energy humming beneath my skin. Nyra walked beside Arren while Jory adjusted one of the silver rings lining his eyebrow, trying very hard to look calm. He wasn't fooling anyone.
Neither were the other four remaining contestants. Fear had settled over every one of them. Good. This trial wasn't meant to test strength. It was meant to reveal truth. I climbed onto the stone platform overlooking the arena. The crowd gradually quieted until only the waves crashing against the cliffs could be heard. I smiled at the seven remaining contestants.
"I'll start by saying congratulations."
They straightened instinctively. "You've survived every challenge we've thrown at you." I gestured toward the cheering crowd. "You've fought monsters."
"You've solved puzzles."
"You've raced across enchanted landscapes."
"You've proven your strength." I paused. "But strength alone has never been what I was searching for." Silence settled over the valley. "The people standing beside me..." I looked back at my six mates. "...aren't my family because they're the strongest."
Calren smiled softly. "They're my family because of who they are when no one is watching."
I turned back toward the contestants. "This final trial isn't about your body."
"It isn't about your magic."
"It isn't even about whether you win."
Their expressions became increasingly confused. I couldn't help smiling. "It is about your heart."
Behind me, Tavren stepped forward carrying an ancient crystal bowl recovered from the treasure trunks. The crystal glowed with soft silver light.
"It has a name." He carefully placed it upon the stone pedestal. "The Mirror of Souls."
Several contestants shifted nervously. Tavren continued. "It predates kingdoms."
"It predates recorded history."
"It cannot be tricked."
"It cannot be bribed."
"It cannot be fooled."
The crystal brightened. "It sees you." A murmur rippled through the audience. I folded my hands behind my back. "Each of you will enter the Mirror's realm."
I pointed toward the shimmering crystal. "Inside..."
My voice softened. "...your deepest fears will take shape." No one moved. "You'll see people you love."
"People you've lost."
"People who may not even exist."
"The illusions will lie."
"They will manipulate."
"They will tempt."
"They will accuse."
"They will offer you everything you've ever wanted."
I looked directly at each contestant. "And they'll demand a price." Nyra swallowed. Arren's expression remained unreadable. Jory slowly folded his arms. They understood the seriousness. "This trial judges three things."
I raised one finger. "Your courage." A second. "Your loyalty." A third. "And the truth inside your soul."
A breeze swept across the cliffs. "If you betray who you are..." I let the sentence linger. "...the Mirror will know."
Tavren nodded solemnly. "And remove you."
The contestants exchanged nervous glances. I smiled encouragingly. "The good news?"
They looked back toward me. "You can't fail by being afraid." Several shoulders visibly relaxed. "I expect you to be afraid." I laughed softly. "I'd be concerned if you weren't."
A few nervous chuckles answered me. "You fail only when fear makes you abandon who you truly are." Silence returned and I looked toward my mates. Dorian gave me an encouraging nod. Calren smiled. Rhyven squeezed my hand briefly. Riven simply stood beside me like an unmovable mountain. Zorath grinned. Tavren looked proud. Gods...How had I become this lucky?
I turned back to the contestants. "When this trial ends..." My voice carried clearly across the valley. "...only three of you will remain." Nobody spoke. Nobody even breathed loudly. "The three chosen today won't simply become Guardians."
I looked toward the magical house sitting proudly atop the hill overlooking the ocean. "They'll become family."
The words settled over everyone gathered. Family. Not soldiers. Not servants. Family. I watched Nyra's eyes soften. Arren's shoulders relaxed ever so slightly. Even Jory looked strangely emotional. That mattered. I climbed down from the platform and walked toward the ancient crystal. Its light pulsed warmly beneath my fingertips and the island itself seemed to hum beneath my feet.
Almost...Expectant. "Kael?"
His ancient voice echoed through my mind. "The island approves."
"They're ready?"
"Some are."
I frowned slightly. "Some?"
"Hearts reveal themselves only when tested."
Fair enough. I looked toward the seven contestants one final time. "Take a deep breath." Every one of them obeyed. "When you step inside..." The crystal erupted into silver light. "...remember who you are."
The light spread outward, forming an enormous shimmering doorway in the center of the arena. Beyond it...Nothing could be seen. Only swirling silver mist. The crowd collectively gasped.
I stepped back beside my mates. Dorian quietly slipped his hand into mine. "You nervous?"
"A little." He smiled. "They're good people."
"I know."
"But sometimes..." I watched the portal swirl. "...the hardest person to face is yourself."
No one disagreed. Because every one of us standing there knew exactly how true that was. The final trial had begun. And by nightfall...Only three hearts would remain standing.
The instant the seven contestants stepped through the shimmering doorway, the world inside the arena changed.
The silver mist swallowed them whole. Then the portal transformed. Instead of becoming opaque, its surface rippled like perfectly still water, revealing glimpses of what each contestant faced. We couldn't hear everything they heard, nor feel what they felt, but the Mirror allowed us to witness enough to understand the choices being made.
The crowd fell silent. Not a whisper. Not a cough. Even the children instinctively understood something sacred was happening. I folded my hands together, my stomach twisting with nerves.
"They'll be alright," Calren murmured beside me.
"I hope so."
Tavren adjusted his glasses, studying the magical display with fascination. "The Mirror adapts to each soul individually."
"So no two trials are alike?"
He nodded. "No."
The first illusion appeared. One of the unnamed contestants stood before a mountain of glittering treasure. Gold, jewels, enchanted weapons... enough wealth to purchase kingdoms. A soft voice echoed faintly across the arena. "Take it."
"No one has to know." The contestant looked around nervously, then reached. The moment his fingers brushed the treasure...The illusion shattered and the crystal glowed crimson. A blast of silver light threw him backward out of the portal. He landed in the grass blinking in confusion. Eliminated.
The crowd murmured quietly. Tavren sighed. "Greed."
I nodded sadly. "The Mirror saw it."
Only six remained. I searched for Nyra. She stood alone inside an endless forest. Someone stepped from the trees. A beautiful fae woman. Older. She smiled warmly. "Mother?" Nyra whispered. My heart sank. The illusion embraced her. "I've missed you." Nyra's entire body shook. The illusion smiled lovingly. "You don't need this island."
"You don't need these people."
"You have me." Even from outside the portal I could see the longing on Nyra's face. Gods...That was cruel. She stepped forward and my heart stopped. Then...She smiled through the tears.
"I wish you were real." The illusion faltered and Nyra gently shook her head. "But my family is waiting for me."
The forest exploded into silver light and the illusion vanished. Nyra remained standing and the crowd erupted into applause. I wiped away tears before anyone noticed. "That's my girl."
Dorian smiled softly. "She passed."
I nodded proudly. "I knew she would."
Another contestant appeared. He found himself surrounded by terrified villagers begging for help while a magical beast attacked nearby. Without hesitation he abandoned the villagers to save himself. Silver light flashed. Another elimination. Five remained. Arren's trial unfolded next. He stood before an enormous ice palace. People poured from its gates. His family. His clan. His father.
They smiled proudly. "Come home." His mother's voice reached us clearly enough to hear. "We forgive you."
Arren didn't move and his father stepped closer. "You never belonged anywhere else."
Silence. The giant closed his eyes. When he opened them again...There were tears. "I've dreamed of hearing those words." The illusion smiled. "Then come."
Instead...Arren looked toward the distant horizon. "I already found my home."
The palace cracked. His family's smiles faded. "I'll always love you." His voice broke. "But home isn't where I was born."
He smiled. "It's where people choose me." The entire illusion dissolved and silver light surrounded him. The audience applauded again and I laughed through another happy tear.
"I love him."
Calren bumped my shoulder. "We know."
Only four contestants remained. Jory stepped into view. His illusion surprised me most. There was no monster. No treasure. No family. Just...A younger version of himself. Dirty, bruised and alone. The child looked up at him. "They'll never keep us." Jory stared. "They always leave."
The little boy's voice trembled. "We're too strange."
"We don't belong."
Adult Jory slowly knelt before the child. For a long moment...Neither spoke. Then Jory smiled. "You were wrong." The child frowned. "We found them."
Tiny tears appeared in the illusion's eyes. "Really?"
Jory nodded. "They're loud." A tiny laugh. "They're reckless." Another. "They're completely insane." The audience chuckled. "But..." His voice softened. "They're ours."
The child smiled. "So we're finally home?"
Jory reached forward, gently touching the child's shoulder. "We've been home longer than we realized." The little boy dissolved into silver light and the crystal glowed brilliantly. He passed. I couldn't stop smiling. Only four remained now. The final unnamed contestant lasted only moments longer.
His illusion offered power. Absolute power. Enough to become king. He accepted and the Mirror rejected him instantly. Silver light erupted and he tumbled from the portal looking utterly devastated. Silence returned. Three figures remained inside.
Nyra. Arren. Jory.
The crystal suddenly blazed so brightly I had to shield my eyes. Ancient runes spiraled through the air. The silver doorway slowly opened once more. Three people walked out together. Not as competitors. As equals. The crowd exploded. Cheers thundered across the island. Children screamed excitedly. People clapped, whistled, and laughed. I walked toward them before they had even reached the center of the arena. Nyra looked like she might cry. Arren smiled with quiet pride. Jory looked completely stunned.
I stopped in front of them. Then grinned. "Congratulations." None of them spoke. "So..." I spread my arms dramatically. "...how do you all feel about never getting rid of me?"
Nyra laughed first. "I think..." She wiped at her eyes. "...I could probably survive that."
Arren bowed his head respectfully. "It would be an honor."
Jory shook his head in disbelief. "I actually made it."
"You did." I stepped forward and hugged all three of them at once. The crowd cheered even louder. I looked up at everyone gathered. "My people!"
The cheering slowly quieted. "Our Guardians."
Thunderous applause answered. "Our family."
That somehow made the cheering even louder. Behind me, Kael's mighty roar rolled across the sea. The island itself seemed to answer. And standing there, surrounded by the people I loved most...I realized something.
The trials hadn't just found Guardians. They had found exactly the people this island had been waiting for all along.
The cheers refused to die down. They rolled across the cliffs, echoed through the village, and carried out over the sea until even Kael answered with another booming roar that made everyone laugh. I waited until the excitement settled just enough for my voice to carry.
"My people!" The crowd quieted almost immediately. I looked at every face gathered before me. Families. Warriors. Children. Council members. Former refugees. People who had lost everything. People who had found everything again. My chest tightened. "When I first came to this island..." I laughed softly. "I had absolutely no idea what I was doing."
That earned a wave of laughter. "I was terrified."
"I was angry."
"I was grieving."
"I thought surviving was enough." I slowly shook my head. "I was wrong." I turned toward Nyra, Arren, and Jory. "This island doesn't ask us to survive."
"It asks us to live."
"It asks us to love."
"It asks us to protect one another."
"It asks us to become something greater than ourselves." Silence settled over the crowd. "And today..." I smiled proudly. "...three extraordinary people answered that call." I walked toward Nyra first. She immediately looked nervous.
"Oh no," she whispered. I laughed."Relax."
"I am relaxed."
"You absolutely are not." The crowd chuckled. I took both of her hands. "Nyra."
"You arrived here carrying wounds no one could see." Her eyes immediately filled. "You fought every trial with courage."
"You chose compassion over fear."
"You chose family over loneliness." My own voice softened. "And today..." I squeezed her hands. "...this island chose you back." A tear rolled down her cheek. Without thinking twice, I leaned forward and kissed her gently. The crowd erupted into cheers. Behind me...Six dramatically exaggerated groans echoed across the arena.
"Oh, come on!" Calren complained loudly.
"I knew that was coming," Zorath muttered. Dorian sighed toward the sky. Rhyven pinched the bridge of his nose. I couldn't stop laughing. Nyra covered her burning face. "Oh my gods..." I whispered, "Get used to it." She laughed through her tears. Next I turned toward Arren. The enormous frost giant stood proudly, though I noticed his hands were clasped tightly behind his back. Nervous. It was so cute.
"Arren." He met my eyes. "You walked onto this island as a stranger."
"I did."
"You leave these trials as something far greater." His expression softened. "You reminded all of us that strength isn't measured by how hard you can strike."
I smiled warmly. "It's measured by how gently you choose to hold those who need you." His throat visibly tightened. "You have protected people."
"You've encouraged people."
"You've made this island better simply by existing."
I reached up, resting one hand against his cheek. "Welcome home." His eyes shimmered. "I... thank you."
I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him. The cheering somehow became even louder. "My queen!" someone yelled from the crowd. Behind me, Calren groaned dramatically. "Again?"
"I am suffering," Zorath declared.
"You'll live," Nyra called over her shoulder.
"Barely."
Even Nethrys chuckled quietly. Finally...I turned toward Jory. He looked completely overwhelmed. "I genuinely don't know what to do with my hands," he admitted. I laughed. "Neither do I half the time."
The crowd laughed with us and I stepped closer. "Jory."
"You spent your whole life believing you didn't belong." He looked down. "I know that feeling." His eyes lifted to mine again. "But today..." I smiled. "...an ancient island looked directly into your soul..." I gently tapped the center of his chest. "...and said yes."
His breathing caught. "You belong here."
"You belong with us."
"You belong in this family."
He blinked rapidly. "I've never..." His voice broke. "...heard anyone say that before."
My heart cracked. "You'll hear it a lot around here."
I wrapped my arms around him first, then kissed his cheek. The arena absolutely exploded. People were laughing. Whistling. Clapping. Someone actually started chanting my name. Behind me came six synchronized groans. Calren threw both hands into the air.
"I'd like to formally file a complaint."
"You don't get to," I called back. "We're running out of cheeks!" Zorath protested. The entire crowd burst into laughter. I grinned wickedly. "Oh?" I looked at my six mates. "Are you boys jealous?"
Six identical glares answered me. Riven, of all people, spoke first. "A little." The honesty made everyone laugh even harder. I walked back toward them, unable to stop smiling. "You'll survive."
Calren folded his arms. "We're discussing this later."
"I figured."
Tavren chuckled. "I believe our queen enjoys provoking us." I batted my eyelashes innocently. "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
"No," Dorian deadpanned.
"Of course not." Still laughing, I turned back toward the crowd one last time and raised both arms. "Tonight we celebrate!"
The island answered with thunderous cheers. For one perfect moment, with the people I loved surrounding me and three new Guardians welcomed into our family, the coming war didn't seem quite so frightening anymore.
