Chapter 121 Absolute Magic
Chapter 121 Absolute Magic
Aeloria POV
Morning sunlight spilled across the bedroom, warming my face long before I opened my eyes.
For one blissful moment, I simply listened. Six steady heartbeats. The rhythmic crash of waves beyond the windows. Someone snoring. Definitely Zorath. A smile found me before I was even fully awake. I reached through the bonds connecting me to each of my mates. Dorian. Safe. Calren. Safe. Rhyven. Safe. Riven. Safe. Tavren. Safe. Zorath. Still snoring.
I laughed quietly. Then I reached farther. "Kael?"
The answer came almost instantly. "Good morning, Little Queen."
His voice carried the warmth of sunlit water. "Report."
"The seas are calm. My patrols have returned. No further attempts upon the wards during the night."
Relief settled through me. "And Nethrys? Katria?"
"Resting peacefully."
I smiled. "Good."
"You require rest as well."
"I've rested enough."
His rumbling laugh echoed through our bond. "You sound exactly like you always do."
"I know." I stretched, feeling remarkably... normal. Actually...Better than normal. The exhaustion from yesterday had vanished entirely. The ancient magic inside me felt fuller somehow. Like it had settled into its rightful place. I rolled onto my knees and clapped loudly. "Rise and shine, lazy butts!"
Six groans answered me. "No," Dorian muttered into his pillow.
"It is absolutely too early," Calren complained.
"I vote we ignore her," Zorath grumbled.
"You vote that every morning," Rhyven pointed out. Riven opened one eye. "She's smiling."
Tavren sighed dramatically. "That usually means we're about to be volunteered for something."
I grinned. "You know me so well."
"I fear we do." I bounced onto the middle of the bed. "It's time."
Everyone slowly looked at me. "The last trial." Silence. Then Dorian nodded. "Finally."
"I want this competition finished."
Calren stretched. "We can have everything prepared by tonight."
"Perfect."
Tavren was already mentally organizing the event. "I'll notify the contestants."
"Thank you."
One by one I leaned over, kissing each of my mates. A forehead. A cheek. A nose. Calren tried to steal an extra kiss. "Nice try."
"It almost worked."
"It really didn't."
Zorath wrapped me in a crushing hug that nearly cracked my ribs. "I missed you."
"We slept beside each other."
"I still missed you."
"You giant sap."
"I've accepted this." My heart felt impossibly full. "I love all of you."
Six sleepy smiles answered me. "We love you too."
Within half an hour everyone had scattered across the island, preparing for the evening's final trial. I wandered toward the village square, breathing deeply of the salty air.
"Morning!" Nyra waved enthusiastically from outside the bakery, holding two steaming mugs. "I brought coffee."
I accepted one gratefully. "I love you."
"I know."
We started walking together. After a few sips, I smiled sideways at her. "Want to go swimming?" She didn't even hesitate. "Always." We headed toward our favorite stretch of beach where the water sparkled like liquid sapphires beneath the morning sun. The shoreline was blissfully empty. Nyra laughed.
"Race you."
Before I could answer, she was already tugging off her boots. I laughed and quickly followed, setting my clothes neatly on a smooth rock. Moments later we sprinted toward the waves. The cold water splashed around our legs before we dove beneath the surface together. Blue light surrounded me as I shifted. My silver-blue tail unfurled behind me, scales catching shafts of sunlight filtering through the sea. Nyra floated nearby inside one of my breathing bubbles, grinning as always.
Then...An idea struck me. "Hmm..."
Nyra tilted her head. "What?"
"I wonder..."
She immediately looked suspicious. "What are you wondering?"
"I've never tried this before."
"...That sentence worries me."
I laughed. "It'll probably be fine."
"Probably?" I swam closer. "Hold still." Blue Leviathan magic gathered between my hands and flowed around Nyra like ribbons of living water. She blinked. "Aeloria..."
"I know." The magic brightened, and the ocean itself seemed to answer. Then everything shimmered. Nyra gasped and her legs disappeared beneath a swirl of pink light. When it faded...A magnificent pink-scaled mermaid tail stretched behind her. Matching pink shells formed naturally across her chest, woven from shimmering magic.
She stared. Then looked down. Then stared again. "...What."
I burst into laughter. "It worked!"
She twisted in the water. "My legs!"
"They're gone!"
"They're a tail!" She flicked it experimentally. The movement sent her spinning in a delighted circle.
"I HAVE A TAIL!" Her breathing bubble vanished. She froze."...Aeloria?"
She inhaled instinctively. Water filled her lungs. Then...Nothing happened. Her eyes grew impossibly wide. "I CAN BREATHE!"
"And talk."
"I CAN TALK!" She laughed so hard bubbles escaped around her. "This is AMAZING!"
She took off through the water with all the grace of someone who'd apparently been born with a tail.
"I'M SWIMMING!"
"You've always been swimming."
"I'M MERMAID SWIMMING!"
"Fair point."
We spent the next hour darting through coral gardens, chasing schools of glittering fish and weaving between towering sea fans. Nyra couldn't stop laughing. Neither could I. Eventually we surfaced near the shoreline and several familiar voices called from the beach.
"There they are." I looked up and all six of my mates stood staring. Along with Arren. Jory. Seris. Every single one of them looked completely stunned. Nyra waved enthusiastically.
"LOOK!" She splashed her bright pink tail proudly.
Calren blinked. "...Is..."
Rhyven rubbed his eyes. "...She..."
Dorian looked at me. "You turned Nyra into a mermaid."
"I... did."
Zorath scratched his head. "I didn't even know that was possible."
"I didn't either."
Riven remained unusually quiet. Then Kael surfaced behind us, his enormous Leviathan form towering above the waves. His ancient golden eyes regarded everyone calmly. "Why are you surprised?" Nobody answered. The great sea god looked toward me with unmistakable pride. "She is far more powerful than any of you yet realize."
Even I wasn't entirely sure where my limits ended anymore. And, judging by the astonished faces on the shore...Neither was anyone else.
~
Nyra POV
I couldn't stop staring at my tail.
Even after twenty minutes. Even after an hour. Even after I'd accidentally spun myself in three complete circles because I'd forgotten I no longer had legs.
"Oh my gods." I laughed so hard I inhaled water. Then immediately remembered...I could breathe it.
"I can breathe underwater!"
Aeloria floated nearby, her blue-silver tail lazily swishing back and forth as though she'd been born to the sea. Well...She had. She laughed, her blue eyes sparkling. "You've said that seventeen times."
"I have?"
"Eighteen now."
"I DON'T CARE!"
My voice echoed through the water with impossible clarity. "This is amazing!"
I tucked my arms close and experimentally flicked my new pink tail. Instead of drifting forward...I shot across the ocean like an arrow. "AHHHHH!"
The coral reef rushed toward me. "Oh no."
I tried turning. Nothing happened. "AELORIA!"
She burst into laughter. "Use your hips!"
"My what?"
"Hips!"
"I DON'T HAVE LEGS!"
"You still have hips!"
"Oh!"
I twisted instinctively. The tail followed. I curved gracefully around a towering coral formation instead of smashing face-first into it.
"...I meant to do that."
Aeloria snorted. "Liar."
"Complete lie." We both dissolved into laughter. The ocean around us seemed brighter than it ever had from the surface. Sunbeams poured through the water like golden pillars, illuminating gardens of coral in every imaginable color. Tiny silver fish darted around us. A sea turtle lazily drifted overhead. A school of glowing jellyfish pulsed gently nearby like floating stars. I'd never realized how alive the ocean truly was. I'd only ever seen its surface.
Now...I was inside its heart. "This is..." I couldn't even find the words. Aeloria smiled knowingly. "I know."
"No." I shook my head. "You don't."
She laughed. "I literally live here."
"Exactly." I slowly spun in another circle, watching the world from beneath the waves. "This is your home."
"It is."
"I understand now."
She tilted her head. "What?"
"Why you disappear into the water every chance you get." A warm smile spread across her face. "It quiets everything." I closed my eyes. She was right. The constant noise inside my head...The anxiety. The pressure. The expectations. Everything seemed muffled beneath the sea. Only peace remained. Only the steady rhythm of the currents. Only life.
"I've never felt anything like this."
"You look happy."
"I am." Happier than I'd been in years. I looked down again. My tail shimmered in shades of soft pink and pearlescent silver. Each scale reflected the sunlight differently. It was...Beautiful. I carefully ran my fingers across it. The scales were smooth one direction. Slightly textured the other. Weird and wonderful. I flicked it again. This time I moved deliberately. Slowly. The motion became easier almost immediately.
Within minutes I wasn't thinking about swimming anymore. I was simply...Doing it.
"You're learning fast," Aeloria called.
"I think the magic is helping."
"It definitely is." I laughed and kicked harder. We raced through towering forests of waving kelp. Around underwater caves. Over colorful reefs.I felt...Free. Absolutely free. A playful chirping sound interrupted my thoughts. Something brushed my shoulder.I yelped. A tiny pod of dolphins. Three of them. They circled me curiously before one gently bumped my side. "Oh!" I reached out cautiously and the dolphin immediately leaned into my hand.
"I have made a friend."
Aeloria grinned. "They like you."
"I like them too." The dolphins darted around us, inviting us into their game. Without thinking, I chased them. For several glorious minutes we wove through the water together. They were impossibly fast. But somehow...I wasn't far behind. When we finally slowed, I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt.
"I never want this to end."
Aeloria's expression softened. "Maybe it doesn't have to."
I blinked. "What?"
She shrugged. "I made the tail."
"You did."
"Who's to say I can't do it again?"
My jaw dropped."...You're serious."
"I don't know how permanent it is." She studied the magic still shimmering around me. "But we'll figure it out."
Emotion tightened unexpectedly in my chest. "You'd do that?"
"Of course."
"You barely know me."
She looked genuinely confused. "So?"
I stared at her."...You're impossible."
"I've heard."
"No." I smiled. "You're kind." The words slipped out before I could stop them. She looked away slightly, suddenly embarrassed. "I just like making people happy."
"I noticed." The dolphins returned, splashing water into our faces before darting away again. I laughed.
"I think they're teasing us."
"They absolutely are." We followed them deeper into the reef. Huge sea fans swayed gently with the current. Brightly colored fish darted through tiny openings in the coral. An octopus watched us from inside a rocky crevice before changing color and disappearing completely. Everything felt magical. Everything felt new. Eventually I noticed something else. The water itself. I could feel it. Not just touching my skin. Speaking to it.
Every current carried tiny differences. Warm. Cold. Fast. Slow. Without thinking, I followed one. It carried me effortlessly through the reef. "...Aeloria?"
"Yeah?"
"I think the ocean is helping me."
She smiled knowingly. "It likes you."
"You say that so casually."
"It likes people with good hearts."
I looked around at the endless blue stretching into the distance. "So..." I laughed softly."...the ocean adopted me."
"It kind of did." I shook my head, still smiling. Yesterday I had been a wandering warrior with nowhere to truly belong. Today...I was swimming through an underwater paradise with a pink mermaid tail, racing dolphins beneath the watchful gaze of an ancient sea god. Life had become wonderfully strange. And somehow...I hoped it would only get stranger from here.
