Chapter 233 Chapter 0233
•AMELIA•
"They want a new Alpha?" I looked at Mason in disbelief. For a moment, I thought they called because of me. "Why?"
Mason sighed. "Blackwood's Beta told me that they had just found out that Damon has been working for a secret council."
I furrowed my eyebrows and scoffed. "A secret council?" I was shocked because Damon had never told me that he was working for any council.
Mason nodded. "Yes. Apparently, Damon and this secret council want to kill the lycan king, but the people don't want any part of it. They want to overthrow him as their Alpha and appoint someone else."
"But why did they call you for help?"
"Maybe because of the recent victory they heard of," he answered. "But if it's true about what they are saying about Damon and this secret council, then I need to act fast and do something about it."
I looked at Katerina beside me. She had been quiet the entire time, trying to take everything in. I smiled at her. "You've had a long day, Kate. I will call the housekeeper to take you to your room to rest."
I turned to the hallway and called Agnes. She showed up within a few minutes. "Would you please show my sister to one of the guest rooms?"
"Of course, Miss Amelia."
"And make sure she has everything she needs."
The housekeeper nodded. "I'll prepare a room immediately."
I looked at Katerina. "Ask for anything you want. Food, drinks, clothes... whatever you need. Agnes will sort you out."
"You don't have to spoil me," Katerina replied.
"I am not," I chuckled. "I want you to be comfortable because you came all this way for me."
She stepped closer and hugged me. "I'm glad you're alright."
"So am I."
She pulled away before following the housekeeper upstairs. Once they disappeared, I looked back at Mason. "Can we talk?"
"Of course."
I grabbed his hand and walked down the hallway to his bedroom. We walked inside, and I closed the door behind us.
I sighed and turned to him. "I don't want you to risk your life again. The Alpha test was brutal, and it might be worse if you must face another war. I don't want you to go through that because my people chose this. My brother was working for Damon. He knew exactly what he was putting himself into."
"I know that, Amelia. But the people did not choose this for themselves," he answered. "Ronan made the decisions for them because he wanted money, but now he's dead. So, should we allow all of them to suffer for what Ronan did?"
I sighed and bit my lower lip. He was actually right because I was forced by Ronan's Beta to admit that Damon was the rightful Alpha whom my brother appointed before he died.
The pack trusted and believed in Damon because I sided with him. And when he made romantic advances towards me, it further confirmed to the pack that he could be trusted.
"No, but I don't want you to go there and risk your life."
Mason shook his head. "I won't go there myself," he replied. "I have no intention of walking into another fight when we just finished one." He sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at me. "I will send people to Blackwood. A team that can handle it and brings Damon back to Silvercrest to answer for everything he has done."
"And what charges would those be?" I asked.
"Abducting two packs and forcing them under his control," he answered. "Killing Alpha Holland and his family. And what he did to Cassandra." He paused, and his jaw tightened. "He restrained his own sister with silver chains. He dragged her across the ground and used her as bait. He will answer for all of it."
My heart jumped when he mentioned Cassandra. Not out of jealousy but out of shame. I had not treated Cassandra well either, and hearing Mason speak about protecting her reminded me of that.
"He won't hurt anyone else," Mason continued. "Not while I am the Alpha of this pack. I should've dealt with him properly when he first showed up in Silvercrest, but I was trying to do things the right way, and it cost us all the time we didn't have."
I looked at him and felt the familiar pull of worry that had been sitting in my chest since before the Alpha test. "You're a good man, Mason," I replied. "But I worry that my history with Damon will get in the way between us. The things I did, the choices I made when I was trying to use him to get what I wanted. It is not a clean history, and I don't know how long it will be before it becomes a problem."
He looked at me. "We all have history," he answered. "Mine is not clean either. I have children with two different women. Rowan's mother is dead, and the situation around that is complicated. And Cassandra, who raised Rowan for six years, is now mated to the lycan king." He exhaled. "My life is not simple, so I won't let you judge yourself when we are in the same situation."
"Are you sure that the pack won't hold my history against me?" I asked. "They don't know yet that we are mates. Once they find out what I am to you, they would want to know about my history and where I come from."
"I don't care about your history, Amelia," he replied. "I care only for you."
"But I need one thing from you," he continued. "I need you and Cassandra to find a way to get along. Not for my sake, not even for yours, but for the children. Alena will visit regularly to see me, and Rowan loves his mother. If the women in his life are uncomfortable around each other, he will feel it. He already lost enough."
"I know," I answered. "I want that too. I want to fix things with Cassandra. I know what I did before, and I am not proud of any of it." I folded my hands in my lap. "I would like to apologize to her properly when the time is right. I just don't know if she will receive it."
"Cassandra is not someone who holds things against people forever," he replied. "She let me into Alena's life after everything I did to her. If you come to her honestly, she will listen."
I nodded. Then I stood up and closed the small space between us and wrapped my arms around him. He put his arms around me without hesitating and held on.
