Chapter 232 Chapter 0232
•DANTE•
"I gave you a fucking simple rule: to keep Cassandra and Alena safe while I am gone!" I snapped. "What was difficult about everything that I said to you?"
"We will find her, Alpha. Theo and Nigel will keep Alena and her nanny safe while the rest of us search around the neighborhood for Miss Cassandra."
"If I find out that someone took her right under your nose, you will regret the day we met. Do you understand?" I sneered as my hand tightened around the cell phone.
I thought about Kael and the council that he told us about. They probably reacted sooner than I thought they would when I sent Kael back to them with a lycan bite.
"We apologize, Alpha. But we will find her."
I hung up the call and turned to my father. He was already standing up when I looked at him.
"Cassandra is missing, Gareth. I must go and find her," I answered. "The person I bit so he could send a message to the Ashbourne Council has probably sent the message through, and now they have taken her."
"No, Dante," Gareth answered. "I won't let you go out there without a proper plan."
"We don't have time for a plan," I replied. "Cassandra is pregnant, and every minute that passes puts her and the baby at risk. I am not sitting here and planning while she is out there."
Gareth's eyes widened. He looked at me for a long moment without speaking. "What did you just say?"
"She's pregnant," I answered. "We found out recently. Which is why I cannot stand here and do nothing."
He sat back down slowly and pressed his hand over his mouth and stared at the floor. Then he looked up at me, sighing.
"Dante," he replied. "A lycan cannot impregnate a werewolf. It has never happened in the history of our bloodline. Not once." He shook his head. "A lycan and a werewolf can be mated, yes, but producing a child together is something our biology does not allow. The two bloodlines are too different at their core."
I stared at him. "What are you talking about? She is pregnant, and it is my child."
"I am not questioning that," he answered. "I am telling you that according to everything we know about lycan biology, this should not be possible."
Before I could respond, the door opened behind me. My mother walked in. She stopped when she saw both of our faces and looked between us. "What happened?"
"Cassandra is pregnant," Gareth replied.
My mother looked down and covered her face with her hand.
"Elena," my father replied, watching her face. "Did you hear what I said?"
"I heard you," she answered. She walked toward us and stood near the table. "This is only possible if Cassandra has lycan blood in her veins."
I turned to her. "That is impossible. Her parents were both werewolves. I know them. I grew up in Goldenmane Court, and I know exactly who Alpha Benedict and his wife were. There was nothing lycan about either of them."
"I know that, but a werewolf can't reproduce with a lycan," she answered.
"But she is pregnant," I scoffed. "So that means we can have kids. There's no other explanation, is there?"
She looked at me and sighed. "Well, in this case, Cassandra might not be fully werewolf. Somewhere in her bloodline, there is lycan." She paused. "But Alpha Benedict wouldn't have turned our pack upside down if he knew that he had lycan blood in his veins."
"No, this is impossible," I scoffed. "Cassandra can't have—" I paused as I remembered the time she shifted into a huge wolf when we were fighting against Nadia and Ronan.
We never talked about that moment again because I assumed that her wolf was somehow strengthened by my lycan.
I never thought much about it.
"There's no other explanation, son," Gareth answered. "Perhaps her father wanted to kill you because he wanted to keep his bloodline a secret. That would not be the first time something like that had happened. After lycans were driven out from werewolf communities, many hybrids hid their bloodlines out of fear that they would be banished from their packs."
I shook my head and stepped away from the table.
"I do not care about any of that right now," I answered. "We can figure out Cassandra's bloodline after I bring her home. My mate is out there, and she is carrying our child. That is all that matters to me."
I hurried out of the room and stopped at the front door. I was heading to the warriors' training grounds when Cassandra's scent and heartbeat stopped me.
My eyes widened because I could feel her heartbeat and another one. There were two heartbeats, which caused my chest to tighten.
I couldn't believe that a little human that I contributed so little to create was growing inside her. The phenomenon of that nature was something I still couldn't wrap my mind around as a doctor.
It was the most beautiful thing to have ever existed. At that moment, Cassandra felt like the closest thing to the moon goddess for carrying another baby in her body.
"I don't know where I am, Dante," she answered. "Everything smells strange, and I cannot see much. Please... follow my scent. I know you can find me."
My heart pounded harder. "I am coming. Stay where you are. I will find you. But please don't cut this connection for me."
"You better hurry, Mr. Larke," she replied. "Me and the little blue buddy can't wait anymore."
My heart almost stopped when I heard that. I was speechless for a few seconds. I didn't know what to say when my mind went blank.
"We are having a boy?"
I listened to the heartbeat and realized the tests were true. My little man was inside there, growing steadily.
"Alpha," a scout murmured as he leaned toward me. I closed the mind link and looked at him. "We have a message from Kael Wolfe. It was sent with a sigil from the Ashbourne Council."
