The Power Play

The Burj Al Arab loomed ahead, its sail-shaped design cutting through the sky, symboling luxury and ambition. Finn couldn’t help but feel small as they entered, the gleaming marble floors and towering chandeliers surrounding them. This was Eva’s world of high stakes, sophistication, and influence.

And today, he was just a spectator.

Eva walked ahead, her heels clicking sharply against the floor, each step purposeful and confident. Her tailored suit hugged her form perfectly, exuding business and authority. The woman he had come to know, so intimately the night before was nowhere to be seen. In her place was a force of nature—calm, focused, and completely in control.

She slowed slightly as they neared the meeting room and turned to him. “Finn,” she said, her voice low and steady, “remember to stay quiet unless I ask for your input. We’re here for moral support, not as a distraction. But…” She hesitated, then added with a slight smile, “They’ll likely direct some questions at you.

Just stay confident. Trust me, you’ve got this.”

Finn blinked at her, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face.

“Wait, questions? What kind of questions?”

Eva’s smirk deepened, but she didn’t answer. Instead, she simply patted his arm lightly before striding ahead.

As they entered the sleek, modern meeting room, Finn was taken aback by the polished decor. The long glass table gleamed under the soft lighting, surrounded by plush chairs. It was the type of room where decisions that shaped industries were made, and Finn felt wildly out of place.

The room was filled with a group of professionals, all impeccably dressed and clearly well-versed in business. Eva moved to the center of the room with the confidence of someone who belonged to, and Finn trailed after her, feeling the weight of all eyes on him.

“Good afternoon,” Eva said smoothly, her voice commanding yet warm.

“Before we begin, let me introduce someone very important. This is Finn.” She gestured toward him with a subtle elegance that made Finn’s stomach flip.

“He’s not only a trusted partner but someone whose insight I value immensely.”

Finn’s eyes widened slightly. Insight? Partner? He gave an awkward nod as the room greeted him warmly, some offering polite smiles, others giving him curious yet respectful looks.

“We’re delighted to have you here, Mr. Finn,” one of the men said, his tone genuine.

“Your perspective will be invaluable.”

Finn managed a small, slightly confused smile.

“Uh, thank you. I’ll do my best.”

As the meeting began, Eva commanded the room effortlessly. Her voice carried authority and poise as she outlined strategies and addressed key concerns.

Finn tried to keep a low profile, sitting quietly at the edge of the room, but it soon became apparent that this wouldn’t be an option.

“Mr. Finn, what are your thoughts on this?” a woman asked, her tone respectful yet probing. All eyes turned to him.

Finn’s mind raced. He glanced at Eva, who gave him a barely perceptible nod of encouragement, her eyes steady and reassuring. Clearing his throat, he managed, “Uh, well… I think Eva’s analysis is spot-on. Her approach seems like the right direction to me.”

The room seemed satisfied, nodding along as if his words carried weight. But Finn felt like he was walking a tightrope, unsure of how he had become the center of attention.

Minutes later, another question came his way. “Mr. Finn, do you see any potential challenges with this plan?”

Finn blinked, caught off guard again. He looked at Eva, who offered him a faint, amused smile without breaking her flow. He forced a polite smile and said,

“Challenges? Uh, I’d say… as long as we stay aligned with Eva’s approach, we should be able to address any issues that arise.”

Again, the room seemed to accept his input, nodding thoughtfully. Finn, however, was inwardly baffled. Why do they keep asking me? he wondered, his nerves making it harder to focus on what was being discussed. Despite his confusion, he kept his answers as neutral and supportive of Eva as possible.

The pattern continued throughout the meeting.

Every now and then, someone would turn to Finn, asking for his opinion or perspective. Each time, he scrambled to piece together something coherent, relying heavily on phrases like, “As Eva mentioned…” or “Building on Eva’s point…”

Eva, meanwhile, remained composed and in control, her confidence unwavering. But Finn noticed the occasional glimmer of amusement in her eyes whenever he spoke, as if she found his predicament both entertaining and endearing.

By the time the meeting wrapped up, Finn’s nerves were frayed, but he managed to stand alongside Eva as they exchanged handshakes with the others.

“Mr. Finn, it was a pleasure to hear your insights,” one of the executives said, his tone respectful. “You bring a fresh perspective.”

“Uh, thank you,” Finn replied, his smile polite but uncertain. He still couldn’t shake the feeling that he had been part of some elaborate game he didn’t understand.

Once they were out in the hallway, Finn turned to Eva, his voice low but urgent.

“Okay, seriously, what was that all about? Why did they keep asking me for my opinion? I barely knew what was going on in there.”

Eva’s lips curved into a mischievous smile. “You handled it perfectly,” she said, her tone teasing yet proud.

“Eva,” he pressed, “I was winging it the whole time.”

She laughed softly, her hand brushing against his arm. “You didn’t need to know the specifics. They just wanted to see how you’d respond under pressure. And you did great.”

Finn frowned, still confused. “Why, though? What do they care about my opinion?”

Eva’s expression softened, her eyes glinting with a mixture of affection and pride. “Because you’re with me. And in their world, that makes you important. They trust my judgment, and by extension, they trust you.”

Finn blinked, processing her words. “So… you set me up?”

“I set you up to succeed,” she corrected with a sly grin. “And you did.”

Despite himself, Finn couldn’t help but smile. He still didn’t fully understand what had just happened, but as he walked beside Eva, he realized something important: she had pulled him into her world, and for reasons, BUT WHY???
