Chapter 33
“Any news yet?” Aubrey asked her dad over the phone. She was in her office, and she’d been unable to focus on work because she was so troubled by Eric’s kidnap. It was one thing to be snatched off a lonely road at night with nobody around to save you, but for someone to break into a house and kidnap a man—that was crazy!
“Unfortunately, no,” Gary said wearily. “I’m even more disappointed that Ian and Jared were unable to pick up his scent. It’s like Eric just vanished into thin air.”
“That doesn’t make any sense,” Aubrey said. “What are the police saying?”
“They found skid marks in front of our driveway, so they took photos of them to be analyzed by their forensic experts. That’s about how far they’ve gone on the matter, I guess. There really isn’t much to work with if we’re honest.”
Aubrey felt disappointment washing over her like a flood. Who would want to harm Eric and why? It was the question she had asked herself a billion times since she heard the awful news about his abduction.
“I’ll be home on the first flight to Fairbanks tomorrow, Daddy. I need to be by your side during this period,” she said.
“Oh, no, darling. Don’t worry about me, I’m fine. You go on about your business and don’t worry about this. I’m sure once the police are able to figure out what kind of tire made those skid marks, they might have a lead.”
“Maybe, but that’s a longshot. Anyway, that has nothing to with me coming home and being with you. My staff can keep the business running without me for a while. Besides, if they need me, they can call or send me emails. I’m coming home.”
Gary chuckled. “When you get bossy like that, you remind me of your mom. When her mind is made up, she won’t take no for an answer.”
Aubrey smiled. “Am I really like her?” She asked tenderly. Her dad didn’t speak of her mom much, but when he did, she loved to soak up every bit of that information like a sponge soaking up water. These occasional snippets made her feel closer to her mother.
“More than you can imagine,” Gary answered her question. “She was gentle and firm at the same time, soft-spoken, kind, loving, almost perfect. I miss her so much.”
“I miss her too,” Aubrey sighed. She could feel tears sneaking into her eyes and she didn’t bother to blink them back. Nobody was here to see them fall, anyway.
“I’m sorry, darling. I didn’t mean to go all sappy on you. See you tomorrow.”
“Ok, Daddy. See you.”
She hung up and wiped away her tears. She wished there was something she could do to help find Eric, but her powers were limited to dream-watching. Of what use would that be in a situation like this?
You might never know, her inner self told her. You could get clues from Eric’s dream about where he is being held.
As with the police investigation, this was a longshot, but she was willing to give it a try regardless. She decided right then to crash Eric’s dream tonight and see if she might see something that could help with rescuing him.
