ADRIANA CROSS

Naya was just as impatient as I was. The full moon was up, shining brightly in its full glory. I wasn't sure how long it was until the peak of midnight, but I could tell it wasn't much longer. If we failed to break the curse before midnight, then I'd lose Dimitri and everyone. That couldn't happen. I wasn't sure how close Dimitri and the warriors were, but I couldn't just wait around. I had to find my sister and get back to Dimitri.

All of these would have been easy if these shackles weren't spelled, blocking out my magic. I let Naya share control with me. My eyes suddenly glowed, and with one loud growl, Naya's strength broke the shackles binding my wrist. Immediately, I broke the chains binding my legs as well. Now I could feel my magic.

Just as I was about to get out of bed, loud growls and screams erupted outside; it only meant one thing: my mate and the warriors were here. They had started attacking. Even though I felt relieved, I still felt uneasy. Nikola mustn't see Dimitri because he was in no position to fight. With the effect of the Blood Moon almost at its peak, Dimitri and the wolves couldn't even shift.

Quickly, I got out of bed and hurried to the door, knocking the door down with my magic, swiftly ripping out the hearts of the vampire warriors guarding the door.

“Naya, track Zoey's scent,” I said to my wolf.

Zoey's scent was faint, but Naya could sniff it regardless. More growls and screams filled the air, and the stench of death lasted longer. But I didn't stop, I kept following Zoey's scent until it led me to a bedroom. This was where they must have kept my sister because everything in the room carried her scent, unfortunately, she was there.

“She's close by. I can still smell her scent, it's getting stronger,” Naya said, and I rushed out of the room.

I was racing down the hallway when Dimitri's scent hit me. I glanced around to find him fighting with a vampire, and swiftly he pierced the vampire's heart with a wooden stake.

Dimitri's eyes met mine, and in a flash, he was by my side.

“Are you hurt?” Dimitri's hands searched me thoroughly while my gaze scanned him. He had definitely worsened from the last time I saw him. His skin was pale. His eyes had lost every warmth and life. Dimitri was dying.

I shook my head. “No, but I must find my sister now,”

“Let's go,”

Naya kept tracking Zoey's scent and it led us past the fight that was going on between Nikola's warriors and the foxes and bears. To my surprise, there was no sign of Nikola or Sabrina. It looked as if they had left the mansion. Zoey's scent led us into the woods, and the more steps I took, the closer I could feel her.

Dimitri and I burst out into the open meadow where Zoey's scent seemed to be more but I couldn't see her. Before I could take another step forward, Dimitri gripped my arm, his eyes glowing and looking up. I followed the trail of his gaze, and to my surprise, Zoey was up there pinned to a tree with magic, and behind her was one of Nikola's witches.

A cold chill ghosted through me as my gaze moved from the evil smile on the witch's face to Zoey's wide brown eyes. Those soft brown eyes were on me, her lips trembling like she wanted to say something. The look on her face was of pain and fear.

“Run!” She whispered but I managed to hear with my wolf's hearing.

Instantly, I released my magic, lunging an attack on the witch behind Zoey, but then, in the next second, everything happened so fast.

Wolves jumped out of the woods attacking us, while Dimitri, on an impulse, shifted into his black wolf, and in the next second, the witch shoved a dagger right into Zoey's chest, and I froze.

My eyes widened, and I felt the fear that crawled up my spine, and my blood turned cold. A scream tore from my lungs as I raced towards the tree to catch Zoey's body, which was falling with the witch's body as well due to my attack.

“No!” A broken sob escaped from my throat, my hands trembling as I felt my sister's lifeless body in my arms. Zoey's blood rushed, drenching her clothes and smearing mine. I placed her on the ground, trying to stop the bleeding, to heal her with my magic but it wasn't working. Zoey's body was now stiff and cold. Her eyes were lifeless and her skin was pale.

My sister was dead.

I screamed in tears as raw pain consumed me, and I pressed Zoey's lifeless body to mine. I felt Dimitri next to me, I didn't know how the fight behind me had ended, and how Agatha, Allen, Gwen, and some warriors from our pack had now surrounded me.

Dimitri's large arms wrapped around me, bringing me to his body. “I'm so sorry, Adri,”

I shut my eyes closed, neverending tears sneaking through. Zoey didn't deserve this. She wasn't supposed to be caught up in the middle of all of this. She didn't deserve to die like this.

I held her body tighter. “I'm sorry Zoey. I failed you,” More tears rushed from my eyes, and a large cavity formed in my chest. I felt like she was going to die.
