Chapter 89 Letter from Elena
Chapter 89 Letter from Elena
Evyths didn't answer the king; she only forced a faint smile, bowed again, and left the study.
Evyths headed straight to her room without looking back; even when Adler tried to talk to her, she said nothing.
On the other hand, Ryker approached Adler, who stood in the hallway, silent yet contemplating what his father must have said to Evyths that changed her mood.
When he turned on his heel to confront his father, Ryker blocked him with his hand. Adler scoffed, staring daggers at Ryker.
For the first time throughout their years of friendship, Ryker noticed the disgust in Adler's eyes.
“Move.” Adler demanded, his voice thick with fury unknown to Ryker.
“Why the attitude, brother?” Ryker looked lost.
"Broth—do not call me that.” Adler warmed as he walked two steps ahead as Ryker interjected.
“It is fucking her, yes?” Ryker called out. “She's bewitched you maybe.”
Adler turned to Ryker, scowling at his best friend. He walked up to him, closing the distance between them, staring daggers at him.
“You are in no place to speak to me."
“But I did.” Ryker snapped with a tight jaw. “Ever since she crawled into the palace, you have withdrawn yourself, all right?” Ryker's slight dropped. “You seldom hunt or drink with us. Why? What is so special about the Omega compared with people of your own status?”
Although his question sounded honest, Ryker was a little bit sarcastic.
Adler had so much to say to Ryker but then didn't say it. He chuckled dryly, his gaze sharp with resentment.
“You disgust me.” Adler blurted and left.
While Adler strutted away, frustration in his hasty steps, Selena scurried over to Ryker, who stood there, speechless and confused.
“What happened? Did you both argue?” She arched a brow questionably.
"No," Ryker silently said.
“No?” She repeated. “That cannot be Adler. He is… perturbed about something that you must have caused—”
“Fuck off, okay?” Ryker almost yelled, staring angrily at her. Ryker walked off as Selene fell in step next him.
“Tone it down, you idiot. I am not the reason he despises you now.” she stated. “I am as worried as you, all right? If Adler distances himself from us then it means that he wants to be on the winning side—”
“Winning side?” Ryker paused, turning to her unbelievably.
Selene exhaled, looking away briefly. “I approached her earlier, I can swear to you that she is not the same anymore.” She admitted.
Ryker scoffed then laughed without humor. “Stop the joke, will you? You are not scared of that… feeble fucking shit, are you?”
“Well,” Selena straightened, rubbing her neck. “Oakley Bo suffered a concussion and broken ribs. I am not planning to have my bones crushed by an Omega simply because I want to test her abilities to do so,”
Ryker laughed hysterically, holding her arms. “It is Evyths, she can suck my dick for all I care, I am not moved by her theatrics…” Ryker pulled away, smirking.
“Evyths is not the same. She is chosen by the goddess and I wish you would respect that.” Selena drew closer, placing a hand over his face softly. “She once picked you for the antidote's experiment, honey, I saw the quiver in your eyes. You are scared, admit it…” she smiled menacingly.
Ryker frowned, pushing her hand away. “I am not scared.”
“You are, Ryker. I can see it. I confronted her and she didn't seem moved. Now imagine if… you try to touch her, what will become of you? Finally?” Selene's question hung between them, the air shifted as Ryker looked away from her.
She had spoken the truth and he was guilty of everything.
“Heed me, leave Evyths be.” He patted his chest. “Believe me, we are not her priority.” Selena walked away.
Hours crawled by, the crystal moon hung very low in the sky. The cold wind blew evenly across the room, biting at Evyths' skin.
She turned to her side, curling under the thick sheets.
However, her window had widely open, the curtains swaying to the wind. Suddenly, a crow landed on the windowsill. It cooed twice as Evyths turned again to left, uncomfortable in her sleep.
Although she had heard an uncommon sound given that crows rarely live in Davendale’s territory.
It cooed twice again, staring at Evyths.
Immediately, Evyths sat up abruptly, gasping. Her hand instinctively flew over her belly and then her gaze darted to the crow on the windowsill.
She looked at it meticulously, stepoing out of the bed. She walked towards the window, thinking that it would fly but the crow stood, taking a step closer to her as Evyths took a careful step backwards.
At that moment, she noticed the small note tied loosely around his neck.
“Oh,”
Evyths took a step closer, carrying the crow with her back to the bed. She swiftly unfastened it and removed the item. The item cooed once more and flew out of the room.
Evyths scrutinized it note and unrolled it. The first word her eyes caught was Dear Child.
“Oh my, this is from Queen mother…” she whispered to herself, moving towards the torch beside her bed.
She began reading.
Dear child,
I believe you are faring well and this letter got to you. I have missed you, everyone has. Without further ado, there is a matter at hand that needs your close attention.
Unfortunately, I must break the sad news to you. Valerio found out about your pregnancy, I mean the twins. I wonder if you have been under fatal stress lately. He noticed it. As I write to you, Valerio is furious and will come to Davendale soon but I am not sure when.
I couldn't stall him as I promised. Please, forgive me.
If you must know, Ravencroft is under attack. Raven has returned with the hunters and… I fear what happens next.
Be well.
Elena Belmont.
When Evyths finished reading the letter, it dropped to the floor, her eyes wide.
“What have I done?”
