Chapter 88 King Summons

Chapter 88 King Summons

The stale air in the throne room blended with the confusion on the elders' faces, staring at Evyths. Judging. Skeptical. Some, angry.

She stood before the Alpha King, her hands firmly interlaced beneath her chest, her posture straight, her gaze vacant.

They had been questioning her about Oakley and why she had hurt the King's beta until the king himself took over the interrogation.

Besides the king stood Adler, his gaze directly fixated on Evyths.

“It does not justify your actions, Omega.” Leon continued, his tone firm. “The wolf now suffers a condition that could lead to his death.”

Evyths stared down to the marbled floor and back to the king. “I… overreacted, your majesty. However, the beta in question questioned the goddess’s decision.” Evyths' voice echoed calmly, everyone watched, observing the changes in her demeanor.

An Omega couldn't have that guts, some whispered between themselves. Annoyed.

“And what decision?” Leon asked sarcastically, leaning on an arm.

Evyths remained poised. “I acknowledge the goddess's call and that is why I am here, back to my kind. Not to save Davendale because I can't,” she stated, as brows raised. “But to help redeem the victory that this kingdom has lost.”

With that, Evyths added no word. Silence engulfed the hall for some seconds while Adler shot her an approving smile.

The elders continued to whisper. The king, he just watched her yet her gaze remained unshaken.

The king finally stamped his foot as silence fell in a total halt. He rubbed his beard, slowly shifting his gaze from Evyths to the elders.

“Indeed, we underestimated the pup, didn't we?” His voice came out smoothly, earning the Elders’ nod. Leon turned back to Evyths with a half smile. “I shall speak with our guide alone.”

As calm as he sounded, everyone could tell that it wasn't over yet.

The king left the throne room, making his way to his study, a faint noise erupted from the small crowd.

Evyths swallowed, her feet aching from standing for over an hour. Given the pregnancy, this was a feat she couldn't withstand.

Adler walked over to her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Are you okay?”

She forced a smile. “Yes. I am. Thank you.”

He pulled out a flask from behind his cloak and handed it to her. Evyths stared suspiciously and then he purred some on the ground before turning to her. “It is water, I promise.”

Evyths took it, perceiving the fresh water as she gulped the entire content, handing back the flask. “Thank you.” Her voice came out above a whisper.

“I should walk you to the study,” he offered.

“I will be honest, Adler, they are not in support of you tailing me.” She pointed out, taking the first step forward.

Adler scratched his head swiftly. “I know.”

“It puts you at high risk.”

“Why?” He scoffed, smiling.

“The least you need are enemies in your court, Alpha. They could plot against you and you may fall into it because you no longer mingle with them. You spend most of your time with me,” Evyths muttered as they walked down the hallway.

Adler didn't reply instantly. If anything, Evyths was right about it. He, too, could barely control his movement these days. She seemed to fascinate him more than his friends would.

While they strutted, Evyths caught a glimpse of Ryker and Selene talking intensely from the end of the hallway. Collectively, they stared at her and continued talking. The look on their faces depicted their irritation given that Adler was standing next to her.

Adler gestured at the door leading to the study as she looked away from them.
Once in, her gaze fell on the Alpha King's broad back that effortlessly held the royal cloak over his frame.

The door clicked closed as Leon turned to them. He darted his gaze to Adler.

“I want to speak with her alone.” He demanded.

Adler attempted to speak as Evyths shook her head almost invisibly as Adler remained silent. He bowed and left hesitantly.
When they were left alone, Leon gestured to the chair. “Sit.”

“Oh no, I must decline—”

“Sit.” he said. Not loud, just maintaining his tone. And to Evyths, that was more dangerous yet she sat. Leon also sat across from her, the smell of the King's spicy fragrance crawled into the air.

“I wonder, what is more impressive, your guts or a newfound temerity we had failed to identify in the past.” He began while Evyths remained silent, watching his subtle movements. “Adler tells me that you have something very unique…”

Evyths blinked once. “Did he? Your majesty?”

Leon nodded. “The incident with Oakley still baffles everyone. I wonder again,” he leaned forward. “Is it rage or… just discipline?” His gaze sharpened.

“I- I must have overreacted, your majesty…”

“Must have?” His tone rose slightly, a quiet laugh escaped his mouth. “And how do I believe that? The elders demand more than what you have stated. They want a guide and not a warrior…”

Evyths took a moment to digest his words, shifting her gaze to the parchment on his table. She caught the glimpse of one letter, familiar seal, unbroken.

From Ravencroft.

She blinked twice, attempting to lean forward but Leon interrupted.

“You are silent, Evyths.”

“Forgive me.” She said, “I would… I would to see Oakley,”

“Why, to finish him off?” Leon frowned

“No, to see if I can undo what I have done.” She stated firmly, her gaze splitting between the Alpha King and the unopened letter.

Was it from Valerio? Did he after her? Was something wrong? Her heart started to race, a thousand thoughts rippling through her mind.

“How would you?” he intensified his gaze as if he didn't want to believe her yet.

“I could try.” She replied, using the corner of her eyes to stare at the letter. When Leon noticed that she was invested in the letter on his desk, he picked it up and tucked it into the drawer.

“Very well then. I will have that arranged.” He said. Evyths rose and bowed, turning on her heel to leave as Leon called after her again. “If you really can help redeem Davendale, I assure you, you will lack nothing here,” he sounded more serious, his gaze pensive.

“I am not here to accept favors, your majesty. I am only obeying the moon’s call.” She politely declared as Leon nodded gently.

“I know. Soon you will have the vampire’s child, will it not long to know its motherland? Or… will you deprive it of its kind and finally move back to Ravencroft?”

Evyths froze in her tracks, her gaze narrowing with uncertainty.
For once, she was forced to think about her children and
what their future would truly look like when they are born. Will they stay in Ravencroft or Davendale?
