Chapter 84 Goddess's Avatar

Chapter 84 Goddess's Avatar
Goddess's Avatar

Evyths sat in her room, her eyes skimming through the several books lined up on the small shelf she failed to notice upon her arrival.
She instantly pulled out one with a blue emblem on it.

She dropped on the chair, her fingers running along the emblem, a wolf’s head in gold. Gently tracing the patterns with the tip of her fingers.

“What is this book?”

Although Evyths could not read perfectly, she had started to pick a few simple words. She flipped through a few pages, a familiar drawing caught her eye—causing her to stop.

It was the woods with a spring.m, familiar to a dream she had once had back at Ravencroft.

“Oh no, the goddess. She spoke to me here…” Evyths recounted, the words of the Goddess's voice echoing softly in her head.

“Find your true purpose. I will guide you. I will watch you…”

Evyths could not believe it, her mouth hung open given the shock in her eyes.

Skimming through the words, she saw the word ‘Prophecy’.

‘The Omega from the 114th generation will liberate her kind. Free them from poison and the enemy's arrow. She will become the veil between the Vampires and the Werewolves…’

Evyths paused. The deeper she went into details, the tougher it became.

“All along, they knew…” she whispered to herself, closing the book.

She could have been more hurt after learning the truth given that they've constantly pretended not to know until recently but she didn't want to.

Not after what Ryker did to her. Therefore, it turned into a blessing.

But, what blessing is carrying a vampire's child? Her thoughts swirled in her mind, her hand running her belly. As if the babies responded, she felt subtle kicks.

The next morning, Evyths usually rose before the sun set. After a warm bath, she noticed the flakiness on her skin, somewhere around her belly and then her arms. Although they weren't too visible, it mattered to Evyths. Wondering why her skin had changed.

It couldn't be the weather, she thought after a gazillion options lined up in her mind. She took a look again, as if an answer would come but nothing came except Valerio's thoughts.

His laughter. The feel of his cold fingers on her skin.

Before she could list the things she missed about Valerio, Evyths shook it off. It wouldn't help, she said to herself.

Clad in a yellow dress that perfectly covered her bump, a furry white coat draped over her frame.

Evyths intended to visit the King's dying wife to know if at all the antidote worked. When Evyths was set to leave, a knock interrupted the silence she had been enjoying.

“Hold on.” She called, staring at the door skeptically.

Could it be Adler? She thought, walking to the door and opening it.

“Good morning, my lady!” The maid, an Omega like she was bent.

“My lady?” Evyths whispered to herself. “Strange.” She said to herself, looking at the naive-looking girl.

“Alpha Adler is inviting you to have breakfast with him in the high garden,” said the girl.

My brow arched suspiciously, stepping out of the room fully. “Alpha Alder?”

The girl nodded, her face to the ground as though she couldn't afford to stare at Evyths.

“Let him know that… I have caught a cold.” Evyths stated and when the girls attempted to speak, Evyths interrupted again. “Tell. Him.”

The Omega nodded and bowed, sprinting away.

Evyths scoffed, returning to her room.

“Why does he want to see me? After all I said to yesterday, he should really be… furious, right?” She spoke out loud, one hand instinctively on her belly.

Her stomach growled loudly, Evyths’ expression softened.

“I know. I am famished too. It would have been easier if your father was right here with us, my darlings…” she smiled proudly, rubbing her belly.

The flashes of Valerio crossed her mind. She could already visualize his cold expressions, sarcastic words and unblinking gaze whenever he felt frustrated or furious. She wondered what must be doing and how he must have been handling things given their previous encounters.

He could be… uncontrollable. She thought.

Her eyes darted to the curtains that swayed slightly, as if they listened to her thoughts—bearing them.

Evyths smiled to herself, staring through the window. The sun was warmer, the warm breeze seething the air that she inhaled.

Then again, a knock interrupted. Evyths was jolted out of her silence, looking at the door knowingly.

“He will not back down,” she whispered to herself, a scowl on her face.

Evyths straightened herself, walking to the door. Her expression was tight as the door opened.

The same Omega from earlier, her eyes glistening with tears. I remained fixed, staring.

“My-my lady, please,” she instantly dropped to her knees, sobbing. “Come with me, have breakfast with the prince…”

My gaze shifted from her, a group of maids staring in my direction with fright in their eyes. Whispering something to each other.

I turned back to her. “He made you do this, did he not?” I questioned sternly.

She hesitated then shook her head. “N-no, he did not, my lady.”

That was a lie, I could tell.

Adler must have threatened the girl to prove his cruelty to me, knowing fully that I would not let my kind—an omega—suffer under my watch.

“Lead me to the high garden.”

Ambling down the hallway, the maids bowed and moved away, whispering again in hushed tones but nothing was unheard of to her.

“It is the way she dresses, like royalty. She's different and… pretty…”

“Maybe the vampire has marked her…” another said.

“It is an abomination, the Alpha King wouldn't allow it…”

Evyths silenced their voices in her head, following the omega’s lead out of the building.

The thick greenery on the south side appeared on the castle. Birds chirping a morning song, flowers on either side of Evyths, butterflies taking flight from petal to petal. The high garden smelled like fresh air, nothing compared to Ravencroft’s stale smell of blood and flesh that she had gotten used to.

A few steps ahead, Evyths caught a glimpse of Adler's back, a royal cloak draped over his tall frame, hands behind him.

Evyths cleared her throat when she was two steps away from him, the Omega hiding behind her. Adler turned to Evyths with measured steps, and the atmosphere seemed to follow his trail.

He maintained a cold expression, what Evyths had always known compared to his sudden softness towards her.

Evyths was used to Alphas and their cruelty towards those beneath, especially towards her family before they passed. How could she forget the tears in her father's eyes when he drew his last breath? Her mother's arid corpse in her room? How?

Evyths couldn't stop thinking even if she tried to block the harsh thoughts that suddenly haunted her all over again.

“You are here.”

“I am.” Evyths replied, her tone vacant.

He attempted to take a step closer as Evyths stepped back. Adler sighed, noticing her guarded demeanor towards him.

How gaze angled at the Omega hiding behind Evyths, tears dried on her face.

“Good job.” He said to her, “Leave.”

The girl bowed deeply, running away as far as she could. Like his presence suffocated her.

His gaze shifted to Evyths again, the tension between them was palpable.

“You declined my offer,” he began.

“And again, you proved to me that once an Alpha, always an Alpha.” Her tone was firmer than before.

Adler scoffed, looking away from her briefly. “I knew you wouldn't come had I not scared the girl—”

“You do not owe me an explanation, Alpha.” She said calmly. “You won, dragging me here.”

He didn't reply immediately, he took a moment to pick his words. “Please, have breakfast with me. There is something I would like us to discuss.”

“Pkease, lead the way.” Evyths said quietly.

Adler sized her up and down, impressed by the choice of her outfit and its color. He could tell, she was well respected in Ravencroft and Valerio didn't fail to imprint his point on Evyths.

Once they walked further into the garden’s gazebo, they saw across from each other. Lots of delicious meals and drinks were arranged on the table.

A part of Evyths could have torn the roasted turkey in pieces but she didn't, she composed herself.

“You look dazzling,” he complimented with a tight smile.

Before Evyths could think of a reply, Adler almost immediately cut in. “Please, enjoy.”

When Evyths hesitated, he continued, picking a fork. “He has told us about your condition. You'll need the milk,”

Valerio. She could picture Valerio’s face that minute.

“How kind.” Her tone was flat.

“That last thing we want is to wage war, so…” he offhandedly said, serving himself some meat. He watched Evyths slice some meat and then poured some milk into her cup. “Can I help?”

“No, thank you.” She said quietly.

Halfway through the meal in complete silence, Adler put down his fork and knife, impressed by her table etiquettes.

In Davendale, only nobles received that kind of knowledge, yet Evyths made an exception. However, she had watched and learned from the vampires back at Ravencroft, times they wanted to eat for recreational purposes.

“What did you want to talk about, Alpha?” Evyths interrupted, noticing how deeply he watched her every move.

“I will be frank with you, you impress me, Evyths. I didn't think that there was more to…” he paused.

“An Omega?” She finished for him, furtively staring while she sliced more meat.

He nodded slowly. “Yes.” He snapped. “I am fascinated by what you have become and what you represent.”

“I'd take that as a compliment.” Evyths sipped from her milk.

“Of course, it is.” He cleared his throat as she put down her cutlery, focusing on Adler. “You were right about everything,”

“What about?” She feigned.

“The things you said. It is in our nature but… it broke you, like every other werewolf beneath our rank.” His tone became distant. “Maybe we should be careful with you…”

“Why? Because the goddess chose me?” Evyths' tone smoothened.

Not anger, but understanding.

“I suppose.”

Evyths sighed after a sip from the cup of almond milk. “And the others? I know, everyone knows that your blood boils without end. But… have you considered the things it did to wolves like me? The scars it left? The broken piece that was never mended?”

Evyths instinctively placed her hand over her belly, under the table.

While Adler remained silent, the taste of guilt even in the meat he chewed silently.

“Nothing can modify nature, right?!” She asked without needing an answer. “I forgive you, Adler, and Ryker too.”

Adler had wanted to speak or apologize if necessary but Evyths interrupted, before it happened.

“What matter shall we discuss? I had wanted to visit Luna upon my arrival. I should know how far along the antidote has healed her, right?” Evyths' was soft, etched with concern.

Adler took a sip from the ale instead, averting her demanding gaze.

Evyths noticed the shift in his expression, the atmosphere too. She leaned forward, waiting patiently for an answer.

And when he finally looked at her, a sad smile tugged at his lips.

“Antidote was repulsive. It… failed.”
