Chapter 852 Chapter 852

Chapter 852 Chapter 852
Uri got back in and checked out the passenger window to see if Oryn was back. He got his phone and checked for messages. Chances were high that they’d take turns driving and go throughout the night. As long as the kids’ stomachs were full, he figured they would sleep for most of the trip. There were no messages.

He checked for Oryn again. He’d known the moment she was awake and wasn’t sure how. His owl was more alert than normal, and that was unusual for him. It could be because he was with another flier. That didn’t make sense because he’d worked with Hadleigh many times, and it hadn’t been like this.

He put his phone back in the holder. It was probably just the situation. It wasn’t exactly normal for him to find those in need of rescuing.

Reaching inside his jacket, he gently touched his injury. It wasn't throbbing like it had been yesterday, so he took that as a good sign. Once he went to the location he’d spotted while driving last night, he’d try shifting to check that everything internally was mending.

Oryn came up beside the door and got in without a word. He had the lights disabled, so they didn’t turn on when the door was open and his location was never announced. Now, he was wishing they worked because he couldn’t see her face in the low light, so he didn’t know what she was feeling.

Reaching down behind the seat, he pulled out the bag of snacks and water he always kept there and set it on the console. “Eat. I found a good spot to park so we can watch the entrance.”

She opened the bag and looked in it. “That’s all you do is watch the entrance?”

“To start.” He put his seatbelt on and started the SUV. “We’ll spend the next few days changing locations to try and get a look inside.”

“You can’t see one side because it’s facing the water.”

He backed out of the trees. “I know. We’ll see how much we can find out without getting on a boat.”

She paused, opened a bottle of water, and put her seatbelt on. “How many days are we doing this?”

He looked at her and grinned. “You’ve waited a year. Does a few more days matter?”

She held his look for a moment. “No. I guess not.”

Driving slowly down the empty street, he scanned every possible location the team could set up in. “Once we get there, I’m going to shift and see how that goes.”

“Do you want me to come with you in case you have problems?”

He hoped there were no problems; his owl was so antsy that he figured a short flight might settle him down. “No. I think I’ll be okay.”

She opened something with a crinkly wrapper. “What do I do while you’re doing that?”

“Start gathering Intel.” His plan was to keep her busy so she didn’t think about vengeance. “We need to know routines. When they wake up, go to sleep, and if they have regular deliveries at trackable times. Once daylight hits, we’ll need pictures of the houses and property.” He glanced to see she was nodding. “And every face that’s there.”

“Okay. I can do that.” She sighed. “Thanks for letting me help.”

Uri smiled. “It’s going to be nice having company for a change. I won't have to talk to myself as much.”

She snorted. “Sometimes those are the best conversations.”

He chuckled.  She wasn’t wrong.
