Chapter 850 Chapter 850

Chapter 850 Chapter 850
Uri watched Oryn stand there until the two vans were out of sight. He had his phone in his hand, ready to call them and tell them to stop because she had changed her mind. Part of him knew she wasn’t going to.

“They’ll be okay, right?” She still watched in that direction.

“They’ll be fine. They’ll be spoiled all the way there and probably worse once they arrive.”

She sucked in a breath, wiped her face, and then turned around. “Okay.” She looked at his SUV. “What now?”

Uri knew the inside of his ride was a mess from them digging through every bag and tote, but he suspected she wouldn’t have the patience if he suggested organizing it before they left. “We go for a drive and find a few good locations to watch Kenric’s.”

Oryn nodded once. With one last look in the direction the children had gone, she picked up her backpack and walked to the passenger side.

Uri got in and looked at her. “They’ll call if anything happens.” He dug the keys out of his pocket. “They'll probably check in a few times a day.”

She turned and looked at him, and he could see the worry in her eyes. “Okay, " she blew out a breath. “I know a few spots that are good to watch the place, but we won’t be able to take this.” She touched the dash.

“We’ll check them out.” He started it, put his phone in the holder, and plugged it in.

“So, we just sit and watch?”

He grinned at the windshield. “For now. The lives of the team going in depend on my Intel, so I like to have all the facts.”

She was quiet for a moment. “I’m suddenly so tired.”

He glanced at her. “Probably because for the last year, you were too busy trying to keep eight kids safe.”

She scoffed. “And I did.”

“Yes, you did.” He navigated back toward a real road. “You can tip the seat back and rest. I need to drive around and get a feel for the area.” She gave him a blank look. “The ways in, out, the shore access, that sort of thing.”

“Right.” She sighed. “I didn’t look at any of that.”

“You wouldn’t know to.” She had her head tipped back against the seat. “There’s a handle on the side of the seat to adjust it.” He waited for her to find it. “I need to know where the nearest law enforcement is…”

She looked at him. “Why? Are you having them arrested?”

He grinned and then shook his head. “No. We need to know so if anyone sounds an alarm, we know how long we have to clear out of there.”

“Oh.” She nodded. “Smart.”

Uri shrugged and then regretted it because of his shoulder. “The teams are very efficient at what they do.”

“When will they be here?” She sat the seat back up.

“I’m not sure where they were coming from, but they’ll let me know when they’re close.”

“So, not today.” She looked out the window. There was only about an hour of daylight left. “Or tonight?”

“No. We can rest tonight.” Even if they were arriving tonight, he still would have told her to rest. He’d done some long assignments, and they were physically and mentally exhausting. He just had to worry about himself and not eight children. He couldn’t imagine twelve months with eight children, no help, and no break.

“Yeah. Okay. A nap would be good.” She looked at him. “I’m trusting you, Uri. Don’t make me regret it.”

He knew she was serious, but he still smiled. “I’m not fond of the thought of being plucked, so you can trust me.”

Amusement flashed in her eyes for a second, and then she nodded. “There’s a little road that goes by Kenric’s place. It’s pretty sheltered if you want to check it out.” She tipped the seat back. “Just look for the yellow house and turn there.”

“Will do.” He turned the radio on and kept the volume low. One of the downfalls for his kind is that they heard too much. He was hoping that after some real sleep, Oryn would be more receptive to Kenric Castro being taken alive. He pictured Emma’s dark eyes when she’d been holding his face and blew out a breath. Not killing the man who had made that little girl an orphan was going to be a struggle.
