Chapter 674 Chapter 674
With a growl, she pushed away from the railing and went to go back inside. Asher stood a few feet behind her, looking at his phone. “Anything?” She knew he had tried to reach Zain again.
“No.” He shoved the phone in his back pocket and looked across the water. “I don’t get it.”
“Do you think he’ll call if he needs help?” She gnawed on her lip.
Shaking his head, he shrugged. “I hope so.” He motioned to the water. “I just want to get where we’re going without any more incidents.”
“Calla will be joining us now, with Slater going with Jett.”
He looked at the boat moving toward them and then back to her. “Did you talk to her yet?”
“There wasn’t really time. We got off the phone with Jesse, and Taggart jumped off the boat—” She shrugged, not needing to say the rest.
“Yeah. We’ll ask her when she gets on board.” He crossed his arms over his chest.
Deva looked at the door. “How is everyone from the island?”
Asher barely glanced at it. “Trying to grasp that it’s over and they’re safe.”
Hugging her waist, she blew out a breath. “I can’t even imagine.”
“Do you think—Zain, going to see that wolf in custody—” He ran his hand through his hair and shook his head slowly. “Do you think Zain knows who the second wolf was,” he scowled, “that day my family…”
“I didn’t even think of that.” Inhaling slowly through her nose, she thought about what it would mean if he did. “That—if he did, he wouldn’t go after them alone, would he?”
Asher raised his eyebrows. “Zain?” He blinked a few times. “I don’t see him doing that. It’s Zain. He’s amazing to get things done, but that? That is very physical and something…”
“Amari would do it.”
He grinned. “Yeah. Myself as well. I’d like to go…”
“Amari would do what?”
They turned to see Amari standing behind them.
“Go after the second wolf from the day Asher’s family was killed,” Deva said quickly so Asher wouldn’t have to voice it.
“Hell yeah, I would.” She looked from one to the other. “Do you know who that second one is?”
Asher crossed his arms over his chest. “No. We thought maybe Zain had found out…”
“You think Zain went after them?” She grinned. “Zain?” She shook her head. “He wouldn’t do that. He’d tell someone first.”
“He’d tell Shepard Addison,” Deva stated knowing it to be true.
“But—couldn’t,” Amari said slowly. Her eyes widened. “I will kick his ass if he did something that stupid alone.”
“Sounds like I’m missing a good berating.” Calla walked toward them with a smile on her face. “I’ve had enough small boats to do me in this life.” She put her hand over her stomach. “That constant motion.” She shrugged and flipped her long hair back over her shoulder. “So, what did I miss?”
“Zain. Have you talked to him?” Asher watched her with so much focus Deva wondered if he was breathing.
“No. Not in at least a week. Jesse sent me here, and I just had to be at the pickup location on time. Why? What’s going on with Zain?”
“He’s missing.” Deva hugged her waist again. The thought of it made her gut ache.
“Missing what?” Calla looked from her to Amari and then Asher.
“He’s gone missing. No one has heard from him. He just packed up and left.” Amari paced over to the rail grabbed it and looked down at the water.
“Why?”
“We don’t know.” Deva glanced at Asher. His expression said he was really struggling with this. “The last time anyone saw him, he was trying to go see that wolf they took into custody…”
“The one that was there the day—” She stopped and looked at Asher. He nodded.
“They’re from the same clan. Do you think he knows him?”
Deva glanced around and then stepped closer to her. She kept her voice quiet. “Some think he’s a traitor, and Illias got really upset and said something about his scar when he found out.”
“A traitor? Zain?” Calla frowned. “And I’m Santa Claus.”
“Right.” Deva nodded. “It doesn’t make sense, and no one can reach him.”
“Sounds like he’s hiding.” Calla pulled her phone out and tapped the screen.
“No sense calling him. No voice mail or anything.” Asher’s tone was void of all emotion.
“Why do you think he’s hiding?” Amari turned around and leaned back against the rail.
“Well,” she put her phone back in her run pack. “Shepard Addison is missing, he’s also their Alpha—if Zain knows something, it makes sense that he’s hiding.” She looked at each of them briefly. “He told me when I started that he’d prefer to be out here and not stuck in an office, but it was for his own good that he was there.” She shrugged. “I thought he meant it was a form of punishment.”
Asher stiffened. “He told me after the king was taken that his only reason for being there was missing…”
“Shit.” Amari frowned. “Where would he go to hide?”
“I don’t—” Asher pulled out his phone. “If anyone on our team knows that it would be Foster. He knows way too much about all of us.”
Amari snorted. “That’s because all he does is call us and yap for days.”
Asher’s mouth quirked like he wanted to smile but couldn’t. “I’m going to call him.”
Deva watched Calum walk into the lounge area. “I’m going to go tell Calum.” She blew out a breath. “And Illias. He might tell me more.”
“Yeah. Okay. Good.” Asher tapped his phone and walked to the other side of the deck.
