Chapter 662 Chapter 662
The wind was blowing the rain in her face, but she wanted to see where they were going as they moved across the water, so she stood out from under the canopy. It smelled different with the rain. She was used to the wet earth scent in the rain. Was it the water? She’d never paused to think that rain brought different scents in various areas.
Deva adjusted the earbud, making sure it was secure and any motion wouldn’t jiggle it right out of her ear. She needed to hear all the conversations for this one.
A large eagle landed under the canopy beside Calum stretched out his wings, and shook his whole body. Deva didn’t know how Creed had managed to fly in this rain and was thankful that she didn’t have to do things like that.
Everything went silent, and the rain stopped. She looked up and saw that the clouds were moving quickly, and the storm was gone just as fast as it had appeared. Glancing at Creed, she was able to see the expression in his eyes that said, ‘break over.’ He jumped off the boat with another shake and took to the sky.
“Gideon looked through their scope at the observation point, Calum. There’s a boat almost at the island,” Illias reported through the earbud.
“Signal good, Illias?” She recognized Devin’s voice.
“The antenna on this yacht is top-notch,” Illias answered. “I can patch everyone in from here.
“We’re getting clear signals here, Illias. Any pictures that come through should be in real-time.”
Deva wasn’t sure who that was or where here was.
“Thanks, Fallan. We need Griffin and Rayne to see faces before we reach them.” Devin spoke again. “Do you have Journee ready to look?”
Deva turned around and watched Asher lean close to Journee and say something. She nodded, but there was no mistaking she was scared, but uncovered the tablet she’d hidden in her jacket and looked at it.
“She’s ready, Devin,” Asher answered. “She’s not used to the earbud yet.”
“That’s fine.”
It was the first time she’d heard Devin sound tense. He always sounded like he was in charge, but today there was more to it. Was it the op or the fact that his father was missing?
“Boat is at the island.” Tripp sounded focused. “Five armed. It looks like they’re unloading boys.”
“They cleared the camp and brought them here.” That was Amari. “Hold on for pictures.”
Deva turned back around and looked toward the island. They were coming from a different angle than originally planned because of the missing people at the observation. They didn’t want to announce their arrival before they had all the information.
“One of them meets with Aiden in his office often.” She didn’t know the voice, so she could only assume it was Griffin. “Tall man with short blond hair.”
“We’ll gift wrap him for you.” Calum nodded to Asher, who took over driving, and then he came over and stood beside Deva.
“Konner, we need him alive. If you could pass that on to Terah, please.”
Someone chuckled into the earbud.
“We’re going in the water in one minute, just as soon as we see how many of them are leaving the shore.” Deva had heard Konner on the comms often enough now to know it was him.
“Looks like only one is staying with the boat,” Tripp reported.
“Is it the one that has to live?” A woman asked.
Calum was smiling.
“Yes, it’s the one that needs to stay breathing, Terah,” Devin answered.
“Okay. Yes. He can breathe.”
“We’re in the water now. As soon as we reach the boat, make sure you’re ready, Calum.” Konner told him. “Our comms don’t work underwater, but Illias assures me they can get wet.”
“We’ll be there.” Calum glanced back at Asher and nodded. Their speed increased.
Taggart came over and stood on the other side of her and leaned down, looking over the edge of the boat. “I want to see.” He looked so excited.
Deva realized he was talking about Konner and Terah and moved close to look over the edge. She’d never seen any of the water clan in the water either.
“Konner needs to slow his roll. Your boat isn’t fast enough.” Tripp chuckled.
Calum moved over to the side, leaned down, and put his hand in the water. She watched him hit the side of the boat. Was their hearing that good in the water that they’d hear that?
She watched the water in the direction of the island, hoping for a glimpse of them. Calum straightened up and then stood there. When she turned to check in the direction of the larger vessel Tripp and Amari were on, a woman’s head popped up out of the water right beside the boat. Konner appeared beside her.
“We’re going as fast as we can.” Calum smiled.
Konner grinned.
Deva looked at Terah. She was absolutely beautiful. Her skin was almost glittering, but not in a sparkly way—if that made sense.
“Do you need me to pull your boat, Calum?”
Calum grinned and then shook his head. “Save your strength, Terah.”
“Yes. Okay.” She looked at Konner. “I am going to look at this man that has to breathe.” She was gone before he could reply.
“Shit.” Konner went back under the water.
Deva glanced at Calum. “Is it true the women are crazy strong?”
“I can vouch for that. Faster than lightning too.” Tripp didn’t sound amused.
“Girl power.” Amari sang into the mic. “You watch your ass, Deva.”
Deva adored Amari. She encouraged the women on the team to assert their power but was always there to beat down anyone who caused a problem.
“I will watch for her, ja,” Taggart said so everyone on the call could hear.
“Just as long as someone does.” Amari laughed.
“Terah just yanked our blond man into the water, and they’re heading back here with insane speed.” Tripp sounded stunned.
“Above the water, I hope.” Devin almost yelled into the mic.
“Barely, but yes.”
“I’ll drop the dingy and go grab him,” Amari said.
“Watch your six, darlin’.”
“Of course.”
“Sun has barely touched the horizon, which is good for us. We’ll have enough light to see.” She thought it was Slater’s voice.
Deva glanced and could barely make out the head of the man bouncing in and out of the water. If the clouds hadn’t cleared to allow the partial moon’s light to reflect, she wouldn’t have seen anything. Turning, she looked at Calum, he looked amused, so she hoped it was okay. Looking straight ahead, she saw the island was only a hundred feet in front of them.
“Hold on. I’m going to beach us.” Asher called out.
Deva grabbed the rail with one hand and pulled her gun out of the holster with her other.
“Got him,” Amari reported. “Terah on route back, moving fast.”
